Microworld: Bees (Apis mellifera) and their importance in environmental protection (Eng - Esp)
Happy weekend, fellow nature lovers! Today marks the last day of July and the official start of the school holiday period—a time of rest for students and the perfect opportunity to get out, go for a walk, and enjoy connecting with nature. It is also an ideal moment to step away from screens, observe the life around us, and explore places—whether near or far—that, no matter how simple or insignificant they might seem, always offer us a lesson or something new to learn. A tree, a flower, or a tiny creature—these are all part of nature and God's creation. Yet, because we often spend hours glued to screens—whether for work, entertainment, or other reasons—we tend to overlook our surroundings and miss out on the wonders found there. This is my entry for the Micromundo contest.
Reading the theme of this contest transported me back to my childhood. There were several sisters of us at home, and about 99% of our playtime took place outdoors in nature. I grew up in an area surrounded by trees, hills, and a nearby river—the perfect setting for playing "mud houses" using the resources nature provided (soil, branches, leaves, water, and more). We also loved observing small animals; one of our favorites was a wasp that dug holes in the ground. I remember it being light brown with very bright, pale green stripes. We would spend hours trying to catch it, and those were some of our most fun-filled moments.
Technology is a vital tool in today's society, but it has become a distraction, consuming more of our time than it should. This has caused us to neglect the wonderful world of nature and the events that unfold within it.
Feliz fin de semana amigos amantes de la naturaleza, hoy es el último día del mes de julio y con el inicia formalmente el período de vacaciones escolares, un tiempo de descanso para los estudiantes y la oportunidad perfecta para salir, pasear y disfrutar el contacto con la naturaleza, también el momento propicio para alejarse de las pantallas, ver la vida que hay afuera y explorar espacios cercanos o lejanos, los cuales por muy sencillos o insignificantes que nos puedan parecer, siempre tienen una lección y aprendizaje para regalarnos; un árbol, una flor, un animal diminuto, entre otros forman parte de la naturaleza, la vida creación de Dios y en muchas ocasiones por pasar varias horas conectados a la pantalla ya sea por el trabajo, distracción y más, olvidamos nuestro entorno y nos perdemos de observar las maravillas que allí se encuentran, esta es mi entrada para el concurso Micromundo
Al leer el tema de este concurso me trasladé a la infancia en casa somos varias hermanas y nuestros juegos aproximadamente el 99% se realizaba en la naturaleza, crecí en una zona rodeada de árboles, cerros y un río muy cercano, era el ambiente perfecto para jugar a las casitas de barro, aprovechando los recursos que nos daba la naturaleza (tierra, ramas , hojas, agua y más) también observando animales pequeños uno de ellos y los que más nos gustaban era un una avispa que cavaba orificios en la tierra, su color recuerdo era marrón claro con franjas verdes en un tono muy claro y brillante, podíamos pasar muchas horas intentando atraparla y eran los momentos más divertidos.
La tecnología es una herramienta muy importante en la sociedad actual, pero nos ha distraído y ha ocupado el tiempo más de lo debido, lo cual nos ha llevado a dejar a un lado el maravilloso mundo de la naturaleza y todos los eventos que allí suceden.
In addition to spending hours trying to catch wasps, we also enjoyed watching dragonflies; their wings are truly beautiful. In the area where we lived, we saw green and brown dragonflies, and occasionally one with a slight purple hue—this last one was the hardest to spot and rarely landed on the trees. When it did appear, we would keep a respectful distance to observe it; I think it had a sensor to detect human presence. The green and brown ones, however, would stay on the plants longer; we could even get close to them, and they would remain still. Many images of my childhood—playing among the trees and in the rain—come to mind as I write this. I remember that in the days before screens, hours of play sometimes felt endless, and we could enjoy connecting with nature every day; there were no time limits—the daily goal was simply to play, have fun, and make the most of the time.
While touring various parts of the city, I had the opportunity to observe several honey bees Apis mellifera. Although I used to be afraid of these insects, they turned out to be quite friendly; I was able to get close and photograph them while making as little noise as possible. It is incredible how much I learned simply by watching a bee land on a flower and extract nectar.
Además de pasar varias horas intentando atrapar avispas, también disfrutábamos observar las libélulas las alas de estos animales son realmente muy hermosas y en la zona donde vivíamos llegaban libélulas de color verde, marrón y en ocasiones una con un ligero color morado, esta era la más difícil de ver y la que muy poco se paraba en los árboles, cuando llegaba nos quedábamos a una distancia prudente para poder observarla, creo que tenía un sensor para detectar la presencia de humanos, las de color verde y la marrón si permanecían más tiempo en las plantas, incluso podíamos acercarnos y se quedaban quietas; muchas imágenes de mi infancia jugando entre los árboles y la lluvia vienen a mi mente mientras escribo y recuerdo que cuando no habían pantallas, las horas de juegos en ocasiones se volvían interminables y se podía disfrutar el contacto con la naturaleza cada día, no había límite de tiempo el objetivo diario era jugar divertirse y aprovechar el tiempo al máximo.
Durante un recorrido que hice por diferentes zonas de la ciudad tuve la oportunidad de observar varias Abejas Apis mellifera), estos insectos a los cuales les tenía miedo, fueron muy amigables y pude acercarme evitando hacer el menor ruido posible para fotografiarlos, es increíble todo lo que pude aprender solo observando una abeja posando en la flor y extrayendo néctar
Bees are known for performing a vital task on the planet—pollination—in addition to carrying out numerous other functions essential to nature and humanity.
They produce valuable resources:
Honey (an energy-rich food made by processing flower nectar)
Wax (a substance secreted to build the honeycombs within the hive)
Propolis (a plant resin used as a disinfectant and thermal sealant)
Royal jelly (a specialized food used exclusively to rear the queen bee)
Apitoxin (venom used in alternative medical therapies, known as apitherapy)
They serve as an important bioindicator (their health reflects the pollution levels and purity of the local air)
They beat their wings to cool or warm the hive
They defend the hive entrance against wasps and intruders.
What do bees do to protect the environment?
In addition to producing delicious and nutritious honey, bees play crucial roles in the ecosystem and in agricultural crop production through pollination; the most common pollinator species for crops is Apis mellifera.
They protect soil quality and prevent erosion; halting soil erosion is fundamental to keeping water supplies clean, preventing floods, and protecting aquatic life.
They promote biodiversity and are vital for maintaining ecological balance. In nature, they provide one of the most recognizable ecosystem services—pollination—which enables food production. In doing so, they protect and maintain ecosystems as well as animal and plant species, contributing to genetic and biotic diversity. Biodiversity is essential for the processes that sustain all life on Earth, including humans; without a wide variety of animals, plants, and microorganisms, we could not have the healthy ecosystems upon which we depend for the air we breathe and the food we eat.
They are essential for sustainable development, as they support food production, promote biodiversity, and contribute to sustainable development goals.
Honey is used in food production, and honeybees provide raw materials for numerous important medicines. Thanks to pollination, air quality is improved, and their natural products are also used in various cosmetics. Furthermore, unprocessed honey is considered a superfood due to its content of antioxidants, minerals, and unique amino acids.

¿Qué hacen las abejas para proteger el medio ambiente?
Además de producir una miel deliciosa y nutritiva, las abejas desempeñan funciones cruciales e importantes en el ecosistema y la producción de cultivos en el campo mediante la polinización, la especie polinizadora más frecuente en los cultivos es la Apis mellifera.
Protegen la calidad del suelo y previenen la erosión, detener la erosión del suelo es fundamental para mantener limpio el suministro de agua, prevenir inundaciones y proteger la vida acuática.

Your stories reminded me of my own, when my brother and I used to play in the garden making mud cakes, pretending we had a restaurant, and we always played with things from nature, we’d even dig holes and fill them with water, and bathe in the mud; it was great fun. But that bit about watching insects was there too, there were wasp nests at home and we used to marvel at them. Dragonflies never stayed still and I was afraid of them. Bees are marvellous; they’re so important to life on the planet, and I don’t know if many people realise that.

Quien cuando fue un niño no corrió en las praderas detrás de las libélulas y las mariposas, el que no lo hizo se perdió un importante paso de la niñez.
Asombroso que las abejas te hayan permitido tal acercamiento. Realmente es increíble todo lo que hacen por nosotros y por el medio ambiente estos pequeños, lo que nos deja una enseñanza: que no hay que ser grande para hacer cosas muy importantes.
