Part 3 : The Downpour

It was a rainy day, as I danced under the rain in a circular motion, clock wise and anti clockwise as a clock would run. Despite the loud noise of the rain, I could still hear the ticking sound of my biological clock. It has been twelve long years since my accident. I'm an adult now, who would have thought I would make it this far, definitely not me.

I can still remember the moment I first opened my eyes to be greeted by a nice pink room, only to lose myself again and was overwhelmed by the presence of several health practitioners. I remember the tough days called therapy where I fought hard to get better while my family and medical team fought even harder to help me achieve that goal and how Dr spongy would dress up in his awfully cute ties which always made me laugh.

Tears filled my eyes as I remembered how I met Jane and how I kept sneaking out to see her at night, how she heard a familiar voice calling and how she passed away. Jane was involved in a fire accident and had been in coma for seven months now, she passed away yesterday, we were told when my mom and I went to see her at the hospital the day after she heard the voice. I couldn’t hold back my tears, I kept wailing to my heart content and was finally taken home in my dad’s arms.

So many years has passed, when Jane’s mother came to visit, we stayed in touch despite losing Jane and her father to the horrible fire. She had come to apologize she said, apologize? But for what? My mom asked with concern. Tj, I am so sorry you had to go through all of this, she finally said, after ten long mins of silence. You see the day of your accident, you were pushed into the road by someone, it didn’t just happen. Yes we are aware of that, my mom said. Don’t you want to know who did it? Mrs Lucy, Jane's mother asked. We do, please continue, so sorry for interrupting you.

When Jane came home from school on the 13th of January, 2010. She wasn’t her usual self and I asked her why she wasn’t happy, she told me that someone upstairs in the junior secondary section, celebrated her birthday and gifts were sent downstairs to the primary section but she wasn’t given anything. The teacher said, the gifts were for specific people, friends of the celebrant. She became sad, so much that she had to match up the stairs and down to junior secondary section 1, class A to ask for a gift directly from the Celebrant, oh I'm so sorry, you weren’t given any gift, said the celebrant. Have a cupcake, she offered with a smile, that’s all I have left.

Jane collected it with an even bigger smile and a thank you, before returning to her classroom. Only to be laughed at my her classmates for having only a cupcake, they showed off their gift bags and it made her sad again. When the bell rang and it was time to go home, she joined the long line of Best Brain model school, pupils and students as they trekked home. It was always a beautiful thing to walk amidst your schoolmates, the joy and pride you feel when you know that these are your people, the confidence you grow just being amidst your tribe, your people, best brain model family.

That was when she spotted the birthday girl walking and chatting happily a few steps in front of her, she rushed to say hi and thank her for the cupcake, but she probably tapped on her too hard and she fell, right into the hands of an oncoming vehicle that hit her really hard, she flew up into the air and ended under the front tire of a motorcycle. Everything happened too fast, it left everyone confused, especially eight year old Jane.

I was hoping to come and see you the next day in the hospital, Mrs Lucy said, only to be woken up by a roaring fire which claimed the lives of my family. The whole house was cold now, as no one really had anything to say, the pain in our hearts was more than we could have imagined. It’s a small world after all my mom said as she gathered Mrs Lucy into her arms, I'm so sorry for your loss, We will all be fine soon.

Today, 18th September, 2022. Dancing under the rain, reminiscing, the house packed with guests as today is my baby’s naming ceremony. My husband and I named her Jane. Beautiful name right? It means “God is gracious” Mrs Lucy made a lot of treats for us since she is so pumped to be a god grandma to my little Jane.

Good bye was what I heard from behind me. Jane! You startled me, how long have you been standing there? I asked... Well just some few minutes? Jane burst into laughter. You are so silly Jane, I said to her with an half baked smile on my face. Have you seen baby Jane? I asked... Yeah I have, Jane continues, she is so cute, mummy is just glued to her like bee and a honey pot, we both laughed. I'm so happy to see her smile so much, I haven’t seen that in a long time, I said while looking at Jane's mum.*

Why did you have to leave, you bone head, I teased her and we both laughed. Tj, this would have to be my last visit, I love you so much dear sister, please continue to live for us she said in tears. I quickly jump out of my body to give her a squeeze, I don’t want you to go dear, even though I understand why you can’t stay anymore. Keep watching over us Jane I said even ass tears filled my eyes and please give your mom a kiss before you leave, she misses you. Bye Tj... Bye Jane... I am going to miss you, we are all going to miss you. And by the time I was back in my body, she was gone.*

It's so sad Jane had to die. But what!! Jane was part of the reason Tj got into an accident? Jane must have felt really hurt that she was not invited to the birthday celebration.

It's a good thing Tj got out of the hospital and everything was still okay even after they found out the truth.

Your story was really beautiful, I was not expecting such a twist, but it came and it was amazing really. Kudos to you dear.
