A fairy tale in Madrid: the marvelous El Retiro Park

Good morning to my hivers of the Pinmapple community! Today I'll take you for a walk in El Retiro Park, which is located in the city of Madrid.

When I was there, this place became my refuge, since the city itself seemed too... "urban ". You may wonder how I could think of saying something like that about such a huge city, I mean, what else could you expect from Madrid!

And I totally understand your position, in fact, I know very well that I use this term intentionally, and there are huge cities that somehow have managed to keep me connected with nature almost constantly. Among them I can mention New York, London, Paris, Tel Aviv. Some of these have huge rivers or the sea itself next to them, but others, like New York, do not offer bodies of water as "within reach" as Tel Aviv.

Madrid, however, I don't know if it's because I caught it on very hot days or because I urgently needed nature, but it made me desperate, because although the city is beautiful, it is full of buildings and streets.

However, it offers, a little on the outskirts, spaces like Campo del Moro or El Retiro Park, which allow you to enjoy huge green areas. For me, this was like escaping from the city for a moment, which felt very good.

I arrived at this park, both times I went, through the Puerta de Alcalá, which is on one of the corners of El Retiro.

Buenos días a mis hivers de la comunidad de Pinmapple! Hoy los llevaré a pasear un momento por el Parque El Retiro, que se encuentra en la ciudad de Madrid.

Cuando estuve por allí, este lugar se convirtió en mi refugio, ya que la ciudad en sí me pareció demasiado… “urbana”. Se preguntarán cómo es que se me ocurre decir algo así sobre una ciudad tan inmensa, o sea, ¡¿qué más podría esperarse de Madrid?!

Y comprendo totalmente su postura, de hecho, sé muy bien que utilizo este término intencionalmente, y es que hay ciudades enormes que de alguna manera han logrado mantenerme conectada con la naturaleza casi de manera constante. Entre ellas puedo mencionar Nueva York, Londres, París, Tel Aviv. Algunas de estas tienen enormes ríos o el mismo mar al lado, pero otras como Nueva York, no ofrece cuerpos de agua tan “al alcance de la mano” como es el caso de Tel Aviv.

Madrid sin embargo, no sé si es que la agarré en días muy calurosos o que yo necesitaba con urgencia la naturaleza, pero me llegó a desesperar, ya que si bien la ciudad es preciosa, está repleta de edificios y calles.

Sin embargo ofrece, un poco a las afueras, espacios como el Campo del Moro o el Parque El Retiro, que permiten disfrutar de enormes áreas verdes. Esto para mi fue como escapar por un momento de la ciudad, lo cual me sentó muy bien.

Llegué a este parque, las dos veces que fui, por la Puerta de Alcalá, que queda en una de las esquinas de El Retiro.

The park also has different gardens, a museum, and within it, there is the Crystal Palace, a place that as soon as I saw it on the map, I wanted to visit.

There is also a large pond near the palace that offers not only a beautiful landscape, but also a recreation for the mind, which, overwhelmed by a city that is permanently active, manages to release tension in this incredible (but very real) place.

Como les comentaba, el Parque El Retiro es un espacio inmenso. Según la página esmadrid.com, cuenta con 125 hectáreas y su cantidad de árboles supera los 15.000 ejemplares.

El Parque tiene, además, diferentes jardines, un museo, y dentro de él, se encuentra el Palacio de Cristal, lugar que en cuanto vi en el mapa, quise ir a visitar.

Además hay un gran estanque que se encuentra cerca de este palacio y que ofrece no solo un hermoso paisaje, sino también un recreo para la mente, que, abrumada por una ciudad que está permanentemente activa, logra liberar tensión en este increíble (pero muy real) lugar.

El Retiro is a little bit a representation of what I think the average Madrileño loves, because although the city for my taste was too much asphalt and material, the people of Madrid are like this same park: friendly, relaxed, calm.

And in El Retiro Park it is possible to perform different activities, from a simple walk, to visit a museum, have a nice coffee or a beer sitting in front of the wonderful body of water.

The pigeons walk around quietly along with the occasional sparrow, and children play happily and safely everywhere.

El Retiro es un poco una representación de lo que creo que el madrileño promedio ama, pues si bien la ciudad para mi gusto fue demasiado asfalto y material, la gente de Madrid es como este mismo parque: amable, relajada, tranquila.

Y es que en el Parque El Retiro es posible realizar diferentes actividades, desde un simple paseo, hasta visitar un museo, tomar un rico café o una cerveza sentado frente al maravilloso cuerpo de agua.

Las palomas andan por ahí tranquilas junto con algún que otro gorrión, y los niños juegan felices y seguros por doquier.

The trees are immense and the park offers corridors of bushes and flowers that lead to almost secret places in this place.

There are two options to walk through it individually, without any kind of tour: one is to look at the map and search on the Internet what you would like to see. And the other is to just let yourself go and be surprised.

I recommend trying both simultaneously, as the surprise is beautiful, but if you are short on time you may miss out on parts of the park worth seeing if you are there.

I went twice, and it became my favorite place in this great city. And although I spent several hours in the park, I didn't get to tour it completely.

Los árboles son inmensos y el parque ofrece pasillos de arbustos y flores que conducen a lugares casi secretos de este lugar.

Hay dos opciones para recorrerlo de manera individual, sin ningún tipo de tour: una es ir mirando el mapa y buscar en Internet qué es lo que te gustaría ver. Y la otra es simplemente dejarse llevar y dejarte sorprender.

Recomiendo probar las dos de manera simultánea, ya que la sorpresa es hermosa, pero si estás ajustado de tiempo es posible que te pierdas de sectores del parque dignos de conocer si estás allí.

Fui dos veces, y se convirtió en mi lugar preferido de esta gran ciudad. Y aunque estuve varias horas en el parque, no llegué a recorrerlo por completo.
