A Total Solar Eclipse in Menorca: When the Sky Goes Dark and the Soul Awakens

About a week ago, Spain experienced a breathtaking astronomical event that not only bathed the sky in a completely new, fascinating, and striking color, but also had a profound effect on the energy of those of us who believe in such things. From a pragmatic and concrete standpoint, what occurred was a total solar eclipse. This meant that the moon completely blocked out the sun, bringing on an early night and inviting us to experience a very special moment.

Un eclipse total de sol en Menorca: cuando el cielo se apaga y el alma se despierta

Más o menos hace una semana se vivió en España un evento astronómico impresionante que no solamente ponía el cielo en un color totalmente nuevo, fascinante e impactante, sino que además también movía mucho toda la parte energética para quienes creemos en esto. Desde lo pragmático y concreto, lo que ocurrió fue un eclipse total de sol. Esto significó que la luna tapó por completo al sol, dejando una noche prematura apareciendo antes de tiempo e invitando a vivir un momento muy particular.

Generally speaking, across the Balearic Islands—specifically in Menorca, where I am located—this astronomical phenomenon was of spectacular importance because the island was one of the best places to view it, and the very spot where I live was one of the most prominent vantage points. It wasn’t seen that way in Argentina due to the time difference and also because, as it happened, the moon passed in front of the sun as the sun was setting; the rays were obscured toward Spain, east of the Greenwich Meridian. Therefore, although the presence of this eclipse was felt in Argentina, my parents and friends weren’t able to enjoy it the way we did here in Spain.

Generalmente, en lo que fue las Islas Baleares —Menorca, concretamente, donde yo me encuentro— este fenómeno astronómico tuvo una importancia espectacular porque la isla era uno de los mejores puntos para verlo, y justo el lugar en donde yo vivo era uno de los más destacados. No se vio así en Argentina por la hora y porque además, justamente, la luna pasaba por delante del sol dejando los rayos en el ocaso; se opacaron hacia lo que es España, hacia el este de la línea del meridiano de Greenwich. Por lo tanto, aunque en Argentina se sintió la presencia de este eclipse, para mis padres y amigos no se pudo disfrutar como sí se disfrutó acá en España.

In my case, I decided to go to the beach by myself. I could tell my roommates weren’t getting ready or in a hurry, so I said, “Well, I guess it’s time for me to go.” I found a spot, took some photos, and honestly, I had a really good time. After a while, they texted me to see where I was, and since the part of the beach where I was was pretty empty, I sent them the location, they came over, and it was great. It’s true that I was a little more focused on being alone, on spending time with myself; but in the end, I felt that if the opportunity to share the experience was there, that really was the best option. And that’s what I did: I sent them the location, they came over, and we had an incredible time.

En mi caso, decidí irme sola a la playa. Veía que mis compañeras de cuarto no estaban activando, no se estaban apurando, entonces dije: "Bueno, será momento de irme". Me instalé en un lugar, me saqué algunas fotos y la verdad es que disfruté bastante. Al rato me escribieron para ver dónde estaba y, como la zona de la playa donde yo estaba se encontraba bastante vacía, les mandé la ubicación, fueron para allá y estuvo genial. Sí es verdad que yo estaba un poco más enfocada en estar sola, en quedarme conmigo; pero al final sentí que, si se estaba dando la oportunidad de compartirlo, en verdad esa era la mejor de las opciones. Y eso fue lo que hice: les mandé la ubicación, fueron y la pasamos increíble.

You had to be very careful to watch it, because they recommended not looking at it directly. Your pupils dilate during the eclipse because everything gets dark, but the rays are just as strong; so it tricks your eyes, and that can damage your vision. So we got some special glasses to watch the eclipse. In fact, I’d gone to buy them the day before, and it was really hard to find them. I finally found them at a toy store in an industrial area on the island of Menorca, because they were sold out everywhere else. It was a pretty crazy and unusual situation, but we put on those glasses and were able to enjoy it.

Había que tener mucho cuidado para poder verlo, porque recomendaban no mirarlo directamente. La pupila se dilata durante el eclipse porque se oscurece todo, pero los rayos siguen siendo igual de fuertes; entonces engaña al ojo y eso daña la vista. Así que conseguimos unos lentes especiales para ver el eclipse. De hecho, los había ido a comprar yo el día anterior y me costó muchísimo conseguirlos. Al final los encontré en una juguetería, en una zona industrial de la isla de Menorca, porque estaban agotados en todos lados. Fue bastante loca y peculiar la situación, pero nos pusimos esos lentes y pudimos disfrutarlo.

When the moon covered the sun and we were fully immersed in the astronomical event, we decided to end that moment in the water. So we went to the ocean, swam around, and honestly, I’m super happy because I fulfilled a dream. Well, I’m really sorry, but I’m going to tell you: it was like being in a moment like that—like during a full moon or something similar. I hadn’t pictured an eclipse at the time, but right then I said, “I want this now—I want to be naked in the ocean,” and it was beautiful.

Plus, I shared it with my friends. The girls went topless too, just like one of the guys who also got completely naked. Everyone, of course, had their own physical boundaries—no one got too close to anyone else—but in the end, we all did something that was so beautiful. It really felt as if nature itself was inviting us to do it.

Cuando la luna cubrió al sol y nos metimos de lleno en el evento astronómico, decidimos terminar ese momento en el agua. Así que nos fuimos al mar, nos estuvimos bañando y la verdad que estoy súper feliz, porque cumplí un sueño. Bueno, lo siento mucho pero lo voy a contar: era como estar en un momento así, como con luna llena o algo similar. No había visualizado un eclipse en su momento, pero ahí dije: "Lo quiero ahora, quiero quedarme desnuda en el mar", y fue hermoso.

Además, lo compartí con mis compañeras. Las chicas también hicieron topless, como uno de los chicos que también se quedó totalmente desnudo. Cada uno, por supuesto, con sus límites físicos, nadie se acercó a nadie, pero al final todos cumplimos eso que fue tan bonito. Se sintió como si la naturaleza misma nos invitara a hacerlo, realmente.

I’m sharing this moment here because, in the end, it has become one of the most precious memories of my life—something I never imagined would happen. I’m so grateful that I allowed myself to experience it this way—without constraints, connecting with the water and with the energy of a sky that reminded us just how small, and yet how infinite, we are when we dare to live in the present.

Comparto aquí este momento porque al final se ha convertido en un recuerdo preciosísimo de mi vida que no imaginé que ocurriría. Estoy súper agradecida por haberme permitido sentirlo así, sin estructuras, conectando con el agua y con la energía de un cielo que nos recordó lo pequeños y a la vez lo infinitos que somos cuando nos animamos a habitar el presente.
