Ao Nang Night Market: The Beginning of My Transformation in Thailand

Dear friends, I’m wrapping up this recap of a trip that has been, by far, the most transformative one I’ve taken so far (and, I’ll tell you, I’m still on this journey).

I still have a lot to process. For me, traveling is therapeutic, and we usually see the results of that therapy some time later, once what we’ve worked on along the way has settled in. Today, I felt like taking a little step back on this journey; I decided to return to Thailand and tell you all about it.

A Rocky but Unforgettable Trip

Although my time in that country was cut short—since I arrived, traveled on to Vietnam, and then returned—I’ll share some of my memories from there as organized as possible. You’ve already seen some of this in my previous posts, but I have much more to share with the entire Hive ecosystem.

My first stop in Thailand was Krabi, a beautiful city that’s home to Ao Nang, the region’s star destination. It’s the hub for trips to the various islands, but before setting sail, I wanted to explore its mainland heart.

Un paso accidentado pero inolvidable

Aunque mi paso por ese país estuvo truncado —pues llegué, pasé a Vietnam y luego regresé—, les compartiré algo de mis recuerdos por allí de la manera más organizada posible. Algo ya pudieron ver en mis posts anteriores, pero tengo mucho más para compartir con todo el ecosistema de Hive.

Mi primera ciudad en Tailandia fue Krabi, una ciudad preciosa que alberga a Ao Nang, el gran pueblo estrella de la región. Desde allí es el punto común para salir hacia las diferentes islas, pero antes de navegar, quise conocer su corazón terrestre.

First Impressions: Between the Surreal and the Everyday

The first place I visited in Krabi was the Ao Nang Night Market. There, I saw several scenes I’d already seen on TV and in other publications, but seeing them in person is different. Among these scenes, I’d highlight the crocodiles hanging at the stalls selling their meat.

I’ll admit it wasn’t a pleasant sight, but in my mind it had always been something surreal—and there it was, part of the scenery. Beyond that initial shock, I really enjoyed the Night Market, as it was my first real taste of what Thailand has to offer: live music, friendly show-style wrestling matches, street food stalls, and handicrafts for sale.

There were lots of lights, lots of colors, and an exceptional vibe in the air that whispers in your ear, “It’s time to relax.”

Primeras impresiones: Entre lo surrealista y lo cotidiano

Lo primero que visité de Krabi fue el Night Market de Ao Nang. Aquí pude ver varias imágenes que ya había visto antes en televisión y en otras publicaciones, pero tenerlas frente a frente es distinto. De estas imágenes, destaco los cocodrilos colgados en los puestos de venta de su carne.

No fue una imagen agradable, les confieso, pero en mi mente siempre había sido algo surrealista y allí estaba, siendo parte del paisaje. Más allá de ese choque, disfruté bastante el Night Market, ya que fue mi gran introducción a lo que nos ofrece Tailandia: música en vivo, luchas amistosas a modo de show, puestos de comidas callejeros y venta de artesanías.

Había muchas luces, muchos colores y una vibra excepcional en el ambiente que te susurra al oído: “es hora de que te relajes”.

We went to that night market with the other volunteer who had arrived that same day—Any, who was from Mexico. But even though we’d planned to go on our own, Jeremy—the guy who was supposedly a volunteer but who, in the end, didn’t give us any freedom—wanted to come along, too. On top of that, a friend of his who was visiting the school for a few days joined us.

At that point, Any and I weren’t too on edge, so it was actually a really enjoyable time. We didn’t feel that pressure yet and just went with the flow of the market.

Fuimos a ese Night Market con la otra voluntaria que había llegado ese mismo día y que era de México, Any. Pero, aunque tuvimos la intención de ir por nuestra cuenta, Jeremy —el chico que en teoría era voluntario pero que al final no nos daba ni un espacio de libertad— también quiso ir. Además, se sumó una amiga de él que pasaba por la escuela unos días.

En ese momento no estábamos con las alarmas demasiado activadas Any y yo, por lo que fue un momento muy disfrutable realmente. No sentíamos aún esa presión y nos dejamos llevar por el ritmo del mercado.

If you’re thinking of going, the market opens almost every day at 5:00 p.m. and closes at 11:00 p.m. Eating there is very affordable:

For about 200 baht (which is approximately $6.50), you can enjoy a hearty and delicious dinner with live music.

You can even spend much less; you could fill up for as little as 80 baht.

I’m giving you the higher price in case you’d like to treat yourself to a nice meal with dessert and a drink.

This and other night markets in Thailand are activities I highly recommend during your visit to the country. That’s where you really get a feel for the pulse of the place.

Este u otro Night Market de Tailandia son actividades que les recomiendo muchísimo para su paso por este país. Es donde realmente se siente el pulso del lugar.
