Come and visit Mendoza, Argentina, in the area of Villavicencio, a protected natural area

Hello my dear friends of the Pinmapple community on the amazing Hive platform. You will see that as I would not be returning to Europe for the moment, I am still showing you and sharing with you incredible landscapes.

From my homeland, Mendoza, Argentina, I feel the need to bring you a little bit closer to the landscapes of this part of the world, since it might seem a remote area with little to offer, but as I have told you in other occasions, it turns out to be a province quite well positioned in tourism even at an international level.

In this publication you will see a large part of Villavicencio, an area that extends within the department of Las Heras, to the north of the province, and that has a very clear delimitation established by the local government that prevents the realization of various activities to protect this sector.

Restrictions and warnings in Villavicencio

For example, as you can see in some of the signs photographed on the road, you cannot make a fire on the side of the road, and you may wonder why someone would make a fire, and in Mendoza it is very common to travel to these places and make a barbecue on the side of the road.

In this case, from where the reserve starts, it is forbidden, and in order to do it you need to go to Canota, which is just before the nature reserve and in fact is the place we used to grill a fish that I will show you shortly.

Villavicencio has a fairly steep slope and once you pass the old hotel, you start what is known as caracoles de Villavicencio, for which you have to pay close attention because they are very marked and narrow and it can be difficult to see if a car is coming or not, so the road becomes winding and ask to pay attention as you go up.

This area is very popular in winter, as the scenery created by the snow is spectacular, but many recommend being careful with the tires and even suggest adding chains to them to prevent the car from slipping.

Flora and fauna in Villavicencio

The vegetation of the place is very characteristic of the Mendoza mountain ecosystem, which consists of an area with a lot of bare soil and herbaceous and shrubby vegetation (this information comes from my training as a Geographer at the National University of Cuyo).

However, because it presents certain alternating valleys in its geoform, it offers areas with vegetation of the same characteristics but more abundant, leaving quite green spaces that, at least to me, have always reminded me of the famous movie Jurassic Park.

Even in this little trip, with respect to the fauna, we had a big surprise. First, we discovered signs that were actually quite exposed announcing the possible presence of pumas and explaining what to do in case of being in front of one. Just as we were analyzing the sign and I was taking the corresponding photos, a small guanaco appeared. We tried to photograph it, but the animal disappeared. When we decided to continue moving forward in the car, we found it again grazing in a dry riverbed, so I cautiously got out of the vehicle and set out to take some shots of this animal, which is difficult to find even in a natural reserve, as they tend to hide from humans.

"Upwards", attempted trip to Uspallata

Villavicencio is a place that has a kind of atajo that leads to Uspallata, a beautiful town located in the mountains, quite far away from the city (Villavicencio is about 40 minutes from downtown).

We could not move forward, in fact you can see the signs indicating the different stops to enjoy the route between one town and the other, but due to heavy rains the road, which is dirt, was in bad condition so we were advised not to continue moving forward.

This led us to continue with our plan, which was to make a grilled fish in Canota, of course the area enabled for this type of activities.

Chicken fish on the grill

This was the first time in my life that I ate grilled fish. It was not me, but Cinthya, with whom I traveled. It was her first time grilling this, but it looked like she had some time of experience, as it turned out excellent.

She put two pieces on the grill directly and the other she wrapped in aluminum foil. The latter was very good, with a very particular flavor.

The afternoon was very nice, as it has been too hot lately, but the day was cloudy and pleasant in temperature, so we were able to enjoy our meal in the shade of a tree and the clouds.

Although the scenery in Canota is not spectacular, it is still nature and allows you to disconnect from the routine and the city.

Love this road to Villavicencio. I lived in las Heras for a while and was always heading out that way. and also did one of the most beautiful 7 days horseback trip around the abandoned mines.
you bring me to tears.. I am dreaming of going back one day with my son (he´ll be 8 next week).
saludos !
