Come on an expedition in Argentina: Puente del Inca, Mendoza's icon

When I saw the sign of the "Rutas Sanmartinianas ", my heart began to beat very strong. There is something very beautiful that unites me to this land of Mendoza, and it is the history of the flamboyant General José de San Martín, a hero without equal, liberator of America and recognized in different countries of the region, for fighting and achieving the independence of different countries.

There was again this sign indicating that the general with his troops passed through there, and he did it by mule, being a victim of tuberculosis, a pathology that at that time devastated thousands of lives in Mendoza.

We parked almost in front of the sign and got off to stretch our legs, but also to start that walk that was the object of our getaway.

The wind was pushing us, indicating that we could not eat but inside the car, so we listened to nature, and after half an hour of preparing sandwiches and finally bring something to our stomach, we got out of the car, to make those 4 hours of travel from the city of Mendoza worthwhile.

There I was in Puente del Inca, after 14 years without stepping on the Andean relic that keeps in the valley the miraculous water that the Inca people came to touch.

Cuando vi el cartel de las “Rutas Sanmartinianas”, mi corazón empezó a latir muy fuerte. Hay algo muy hermoso que me une a esta tierra mendocina, y es la historia del flamante General José de San Martín, un héroe sin igual, libertador de América y reconocido en diferentes países de la región, por luchar y alcanzar la independencia de diferentes países.

Allí estaba otra vez este cartel que indica que el general con sus tropas pasó por allí, y lo hizo en mula, siendo víctima de la tuberculosis, patología que en aquel momento arrasaba con miles de vidas en Mendoza.

Estacionamos casi frente al cartel y bajamos para estirar las piernas, pero también para iniciar aquel paseo que era objeto de nuestra escapada.

El viento nos empujaba, indicándonos que no podríamos comer sino dentro del auto, así que escuchamos a la naturaleza, y tras una media hora de preparar sándwiches y finalmente acercarle algo a nuestro estómago, nos bajamos del auto, para hacer valer esas 4 horas de viaje desde la ciudad de Mendoza.

Allí estaba yo en Puente del Inca, después de 14 años sin pisar la reliquia andina que guarda en el valle el agua milagrosa que el pueblo incaico se acercaba a tocar.

What is Puente del Inca?

Puente del Inca, this particular corner of the mountain range, is practically made of rust, and they say that whatever you put there, it oxidizes and turns that sulfur color you see in the photos.

For as long as I can remember, this place has been closed, but as you can read in the posters that I share and that are in this same place, apparently in the near past it had a lot of life.

According to the tourism referents in charge of this area of the mountain, Puente del Inca had a hotel, which was destroyed by a health in 1965. According to the signs, this hotel had rooms with thermal baths, since the water under the bridge is thermal and would have curative properties. The only thing that remains of that construction, are the windows that can be seen there and the chapel.

Because this is part of the Qhapaq Ñan Andean Road System, it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and that is why it is closed and protected, and also because locals and tourists approached the bridge without qualms, generating a severe and rapid deterioration.

¿Qué es Puente del Inca?

Puente del Inca, este particular rincón de la cordillera, está prácticamente constituido por óxido, y dicen que lo que uno coloca allí, se oxida y queda de ese color azufre que ven en las fotos.

Desde que tengo recuerdo, este lugar ha estado cerrado, pero como pueden leer en los carteles que comparto y que se encuentran en este mismo lugar, aparentemente en un pasado cercano tuvo bastante vida.

Según indican los referentes de turismo encargados de esta zona de la montaña, Puente del Inca tenía un hotel, que fue destruido por un alud en 1965. Según indica la señalización, este hotel tenía habitaciones con baños termales, pues el agua que ven bajo el puente, es termal y tendría propiedades curativas. Lo único que quedó de aquella construcción, son las ventanas que pueden verse allí y la capilla.

Debido a que esto forma parte del Sistema vial Andino Qhapaq Ñan, ha sido declarado PAtrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, y es por ello que está cerrado y protegido, y además porque los locales y turistas se acercaban sin reparos al puente, generando un deterioro severo y veloz.

It is a place that has practically no urban development and there is really the natural monument, the train tracks, and the locals, which are quite scarce.

It is a windy and cold area, so I recommend stopping in Uspallata and not here if you intend to spend the night.

In addition to the aforementioned locals, there are numerous artisans, who offer different products, among which predominate the rocks and ornaments, not of oxide but of onyx stone.

¿Qué hay en la zona?

Este lugar,q ue se encuentra a 1730 metros sobre el nivel Del Mar, ofrece alojamiento y algunos bares en donde uno puede quedarse por el día o incluso pasar la noche.

Es un lugar que prácticamente no cuenta con desarrollo urbano y realmente está el monumento natural, las vías del tren, y los locales, que son bastante escasos.

Es una zona ventosa y fría, por lo que recomiendo hacer parada en Uspallata y no aquí si lo que se pretende es pasar la noche.

Además de los locales mencionados, hay numerosos artesanos, que ofrecen diferentes productos, entre los que predominan las rocas y los adornos, no de óxido sino de piedra ónix.

Do I recommend it?

Without a doubt I recommend visiting this place if you travel to Mendoza. It is a place that from my point of view, has no comparison. The mountainous environment is also beautiful, and the trip to Puente del Inca seems surreal, as you go into the imposing mountains, with their different shapes and colors, are able to hypnotize.

The curves and counter curves, the snow, the aridity of the film, make you fall in love while generating a constant sensation of curiosity: *what will be behind that hill?

To get to Puente del Inca, you will also pass through Uspallata and Penitentes, both very beautiful places to visit. The second one in particular, is very famous, since in winter is where the ski slopes are enabled for skiing.

¿Lo recomiendo?

Sin duda alguna recomiendo visitar este lugar si viajas a Mendoza. Se trata de un espacio que desde mi punto de vista, no tiene comparación. El entorno montañoso además, es bellísimo, y el viaje hasta Puente del Inca parece surrealista, ya que vas adentrándote por las imponentes montañas, que con sus diferentes formas y colores, son capaces de hipnotizar.

Las curvas y contra curvas, la nieve, la aridez de película, enamoran al tiempo que generan una constante sensación de curiosidad: ¿qué habrá detrás de ese cerro?

Para llegar a Puente del Inca además, pasarás por Uspallata y Penitentes, ambos dos espacios muy bonitos para conocer. El segundo en especial, es muy famoso, ya que en invierno es donde se habilitan las pistas para esquiar.
