Come travel with me to Perugia, the city of chocolate in Italy

Hello my dear Pinmapple friends, in this post I'm taking you on a trip to Italy, in a flurry of memories that accompanies me at the moment. It turns out that when I was doing my first volunteering in Torre del Colle, a small town near Rome, we had one or two days off per week, and on my first break I decided to go for two days to Perugia, which I could say is the capital of chocolate in Italy.

Umbria and its rural and urban landscapes

Perugia is a city located in Umbria, a beautiful region full of unevenness in its landscape. There are hills everywhere and the rural landscape is really beautiful for the amount of land dedicated to agriculture and wine growing, because yes, this is a wine region, so the vineyards decorate the landscape in a wonderful way.

Now, what about the urban area of this region? And... here it can get a bit complicated and that's when we travel to Perugia. There is a particularity in different Italian cities and it is that these slopes that make you fall in love in remote areas, are also in the middle of the city, and it is very nice to see them, but it is a great challenge to walk them.

My experience arriving in Perugia

As soon as I arrived in Perugia, I began to see posters of universities and large groups of kids with folders and study materials, so I concluded that it is a university city, a fact that I later corroborated during my little trip.

Upon arrival, everything looked quite flat from the train station, but the hostel where I was going to stay, Little Italy, which was about 20 minutes walk away, was suddenly not only that distance in time, which was quite short for me, but all the way up an extremely steep slope. I still remember the weight I felt on my back as I took one step after another. Anyway, that is now an anecdote, and I also found some escalators that took me to higher parts of Perugia.

The point is that I was in a fairly high part of the city, but it was where it all happened at the end, since the center is up there.

Mi experiencia llegando a Perugia

What is Perugia like?

This outstanding Italian city has very narrow streets, in fact, I had a hard time finding the hostel because I was going up a staircase that went down an alley. It's like a giant borgo, since the whole city is at the top, it generates a certain feeling of being closed, although it is not.

There is a main street that acts as a square and is called Piazza Giacomo Matteeotti, where they sell chocolates in different places, and among them stands out the brand Perugina, characteristic of this city.

Perugia is quite small and can be visited in one or two days, although I always recommend having enough time to be able to walk and visit the different corners of the city in peace.

What to do in Perugia?

There are several things to do beyond its size, and among them, I definitely recommend eating chocolate and having an ice cream in the previously mentioned area, but you can also sit somewhere in the small part of Piazza IV Novembre.

The most beautiful place is the Giardino del Pinceto, which is located near the Mercato Coperto, because from this area, you will be able to contemplate a first class panoramic view. Also in this area, it is very quiet and an excellent place to sit for a moment. There are ice-cream parlors and cafés all around.

After being in this sector, you can walk a little to the south, where you will find the Rocca Paulina, a medieval-looking structure that will invite you to take more pictures.

Security in Perugia

The city is quite safe and I traveled being a woman, and I went alone, and the truth is that I felt extremely comfortable. The people of Perugia are extremely friendly and very accustomed to tourism, so they welcome you with open arms. Also, although there are differences on this point, I have always found Italians to be very friendly (although sometimes angry), and Perugia is an exponent of this joy they have, especially in restaurants. They always offer the best and have a very friendly treatment for the visitor.

Even in the hostel, which was full of tourists and that time I got a bed in a room of 10 people, I felt very well and although no one knew anyone, the atmosphere was of absolute respect. The place, Little Italy, was very clean, so I recommend it.

How to get to Perugia?

Taking a train from nearby cities such as Bevagna, Terni or Assisi is very easy. In case you have rented a car, it is even easier. In the post I have left you pictures of the train tickets, which were a little more than 4 euros traveling from Foligno. The truth is that the price is quite affordable.

Hope you found the post useful friends and liked this excursion!!!!
