Discovering the Eternal City: 7 Things to do in Rome and a Bonus

Hello to all my dear hivers of the Pinmapple community. Today I bring you a tour I took of Rome.

I have been blessed to visit that city three times. The first time I was only 12 years old and I don't remember too much of that experience, but the second time, I traveled in 2019, already 31 years old. And the third time was in September 2021, that is, last year.

Today I will share photos of both dates, since in 2019 I managed to visit more corners of that city, but last year, I got better shots of that beautiful destination.

The truth is that a single publication is somewhat short for what I knew of Rome, so I will try to be concrete.

Descubriendo la ciudad eterna: 7 cosas que hacer en Roma y un bonus

Hola a todos mis queridos hivers de la comunidad de Pinmapple. Hoy les traigo un paseo que hice por Roma.

He tenido la bendición de visitar esa ciudad tres veces. La primera vez tenía tan solo 12 años y no recuerdo demasiado de aquella experiencia, pero la segunda vez, viajé en el 2019, ya con 31años. Y la tercera vez, fue en septiembre del 2021, es decir, el año pasado.

Hoy compartiré fotos de ambas fechas, ya que en el 2019 logré visitar más rincones de esa ciudad, pero el año pasado, logré mejores tomas de ese hermoso destino.

La verdad es que una sola publicación queda algo corta para lo que conocí de Roma, así que intentaré ser concreta.

The Roman Colosseum

How not to start with this impressive work? I will not walk through historical topics because it is not something that dominates and the post will be very extensive, but I will tell you that what we know as the Roman Colosseum, was called Flavian Amphitheater, as it began having that function.

It is one of the initial 7 wonders of the world, and although I did not have the chance to enter, its structure has a tremendous impact already from the outside.

It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1980 and is one of Italy's 51 World Heritage Sites (this is the leading country in terms of the number of UNESCO sites). On the bbc.com website you can read more information about it.

El Coliseo Romano

¿Cómo no empezar con esta impactante obra? No pasearé por temas históricos porque no es algo que domine y se hará extensísimo el post, pero sí les contaré que este que conocemos como Coliseo Romano, se llamaba Anfiteatro Flavio, ya que comenzó teniendo esa función.
Es una de las iniciales 7 maravillas del mundo, y aunque no tuve la posibilidad de entrar, su estructura impacta tremendamente ya desde fuera.

Se declaró Patrimonio de la humanidad en 1980, y es uno de los 51 sitios patrimonio de la humanidad que tiene Italia (este es el país que lidera en cuanto a la cantidad de espacios de la UNESCO). En la página web de la bbc.com pueden leer más información al respecto.

Trevi Fountain

This is another Roman and Italian icon of baroque style, and has become the place par excellence where you have to "throw a coin into the fountain to return".

The space is usually packed with tourists, and in 2019 I had to get up very early and get to the fountain at about 8 am, to manage to get my picture taken. Guess what... there were already other people doing the exact same thing.

Although I'm not a fan of taking pictures in typical tourist spots, I must admit that in my case, it ends up being something inevitable, since I end up thinking "I'm here, how can I not take the picture?"

Fuente de Trevi

Se trata de otro ícono romano e italiano de estilo barroco, y se ha convertido en el lugar por excelencia en donde hay que “arrojar una moneda a la fuente para volver”.

El espacio suele estar repleto de turistas, y en el año 2019 tuve que levantarme muy temprano y llegar a la fuente a las 8 am aproximadamente, para lograr sacarme una foto. Adivinen qué… ya había otras personas haciendo exactamente lo mismo.

Aunque no soy fanática de las fotos en los típicos lugares turísticos, debo reconocer que en mi caso, termina siendo algo inevitable, ya que termino pensando “estoy acá, ¿cómo no sacar la foto?”

Castel Sant'Angelo

I arrived at this castle by chance, on my walk to Vatican City (yes, you can get there walking and in fact, I recommend it, because the city of Rome deserves it and invites you to do that).

Reading the page audioguiaroma.com I discovered that this castle has had different functions throughout history, being the first mausoleum of Hadrian, the emperor; fort in times of invasion; house of popes; prison... In addition, it has a corridor that connects the castle with the Vatican City.

Its architecture is beautiful and impressive, so much so that I was walking in one direction and when I saw it on my left, crossing the Tiber River, I could not resist and went to see what it was all about.

Castillo de Sant'Angelo

Llegué a este castillo de casualidad, en mi caminata hacia Ciudad del Vaticano (sí, se puede llegar caminando y de hecho lo recomiendo, porque la ciudad de Roma lo amerita e invita a hacer eso).

Leyendo la página audioguiaroma.com he descubierto que este castillo ha tenido diferentes funciones a lo largo de la historia, siendo primero mausoleo de Adriano, el emperador; fuerte en tiempos de invasión; casa de papas; cárcel… Además, cuenta con un pasillo que conecta al castillo con la ciudad del Vaticano.

Su arquitectura es bellísima e impactante, tanto que yo iba caminando en una dirección y cuando lo vi a mi izquierda, cruzando el río Tíber, no pude resistirme y fui a ver de qué se trataba.

Piazza Cavour in Rome

I clarify Rome because I also knew one with the same name in the city of Bologna.

It turns out that while visiting Castel Sant' Angelo, looking at the map, I discovered that I was very close to this square, so I said "mmm... why not?" And so I came to a kind space with plenty of greenery, which managed to shelter me from that hot day on my trip in 2019.

Piazza Cavour de Roma

Aclaro de Roma porque también conocí una con el mismo nombre en la ciudad de Bologna.

Resulta que al visitar el Castillo de Sant’ Angelo, al ver el mapa, descubrí que me encontraba muy cerca de esta plaza, así que dije “mmm… ¿por qué no?” Y así llegué a un amable espacio con bastante verde, que logró refugiarme de aquel día de calor en mi viaje en el 2019.

Villa Borghese and Piazza del Popolo

As always, I was looking for green spaces, hehe. When I saw on the map that there was a huge park just a few minutes' walk away, I didn't hesitate for a second: I went there.

It turns out that first I arrived at the Piazza del Popolo, which is characterized by musicians playing well-known songs, but at the same time, the three times I have passed by there, I have seen people expressing their dissatisfaction with various issues, so I guess that space is also a place that people have to express themselves.

It is worth mentioning that the fastest way to get to this square is walking along the Via del Corso, one of the most emblematic streets of Rome, which you should definitely visit.

Returning to Piazza del Popolo, it has a staircase behind one of the sculptures, which if you take, you will reach Villa Borghese, my favorite place in the city.

It is an extremely large space, which has one of the most beautiful views of Rome, from the Terrazza del Pinnicio.

There really is a huge park, on the heights, where you can even find a small natural lake where you can spend an afternoon paddling.

Villa Borghese y Plaza del Popolo

Como siempre, yo buscando espacios verdes, jeje. Cuando vi en el mapa que había tremedo parque a tan solo unos cuantos minutos caminando, no lo dudé ni un solo segundo: Fui hacia ese lugar.

Resulta que primero llegué a la Piazza del Popolo, que se caracteriza por tener músicos tocando canciones muy conocidas, pero al mismo tiempo, las tres veces que he pasado por allí, he visto gente manifestando su descontento con diversos temas, por ello supongo que ese espacio también es un lugar que tiene el pueblo para expresarse.
Cabe aclarar que la manera más rápida de llegar a esta plaza es andando por la Vía del Corso, una de las más emblemáticas calles de Roma, que sin dudas deberás visitar.

Volviendo a la Plaza del Popolo, la misma cuenta con una escalera detrás de una de las esculturas, que si la tomas, llegarás a Villa Borghese, mi lugar preferido de la ciudad.

Se trata de un espacio sumamente amplio, que tiene una de las vistas más bellas de Roma, desde la Terrazza del Pinnicio.

Allí sí que hay un parque inmenso, en las alturas, en donde incluso pueden encontrar un pequeño lago natural donde pasar una tarde remando.

Piazza Navona

This square can also be reached quietly walking and is an urban space that is always full of people taking pictures (even so it was in 2021, when we were still with the coronavirus attacking violently).

It is a square without greenery (this is something very Italian: most of the squares, are made of stone, cement and so on, do not have trees and grass as in Argentina, for example), however, people enjoy it very much. It has exquisite statues, worthy of photographing.

Plaza Navona

A esta plaza también se puede llegar tranquilamente caminando y es un espacio urbano que siempre está repleto de personas tomando fotos (incluso así estaba en 2021, cuando todavía estábamos con el coronavirus atacando con violencia).

Es una plaza sin verde (esto es algo muy italiano: la mayoría de las plazas, son de piedra, cemento y demás, no tienen árboles y césped como ocurre en Argentina, por ejemplo), sin embargo, las personas la disfrutan mucho. Cuenta con estatuas exquisitas, dignas de fotografiar.

Plaza España

Different streets (vias), lead to this square, among them, Via del Babuino and Via Gregoriana. It has a beautiful fountain in the center, the Fountain of the Barge, and a few meters from it there is a column with the Madonna of the Immaculate Conception in the heights.

In addition, in this place there are some incredible staircases of Rome, leading to the Church of Trinità dei Monti.

Plaza España

Diferentes calles (vias), conducen a esta plaza, entre ellas, la Via del Babuino y la Via Gregoriana. Cuenta con una fuente preciosa en el centro, la Fuente de la Barcaza, y a pocos metros de ella hay una columna con la Virgen de la Inmaculada concepción en las alturas.

Además, en este sitio hay unas escalinatas increíbles de Roma, que conducen a la Iglesia de la Trinità dei Monti.

BONUS

Although there are more things to do, some of which I visited, I think it will extend the post too much if I continue. However, there is something that I want to share with you and that in a way I have introduced throughout the writing, and it is about activity and space that is within the reach of all: they are the streets of the city.

I recommend going to Rome between 5 to 7 days just to have the possibility to get to know the city by walking!!! It is totally possible, and it is much more enjoyable, since even, in most of these emblematic works, cars cannot enter.

Rome has narrow streets and the circulation of cars has been limited to the space outside the old town.

Besides, walking, you can visit bars, eat spectacular gelatos, sit down for a spritz, and contemplate the beauty of the city.

BONUS

Aunque hay más cosas para hacer, algunas de las cuales visité, creo que se extenderá demasiado el post si continúo. Sin embargo, hay algo que les quiero compartir y que en cierto modo he introducido a lo largo del escrito, y se trata de una actividad y espacio que está al alcance de todo: son las calles de la ciudad.

Recomiendo ir a Roma entre 5 a 7 días justamente para tener la posibilidad de conocer la ciudad caminando!! Es totalmente posible, y se disfruta mucho más, ya que incluso, a la mayoría de estas obras emblemáticas, no pueden ingresar los autos.

Roma tiene calles estrechas y la circulación de automóviles se ha limitado al espacio que está fuera del casco antiguo.

Además, caminando, podrás conocer bares, comer gelatos espectaculares, sentarte a tomar un spritz, y contemplar la belleza de la ciudad.
