Geneva, St. Peter's Cathedral and part of the old town

Geneva represents for me today, that little place of change. The two times I passed through Switzerland in my life occurred during the European autumn-winter 2023 - 2024 and both times it was to make radical changes.

Today, friends of Hive and Pinmapple, I take you for a walk in the area of the Cathedral of Geneva, located in what is known as the old town of the city, very famous for its beauty, for its somewhat medieval architecture that captivates with its game of narrowness and breadth, present meter by meter.

Ginebra, Catedral De San Pedro y parte del casco antiguo

Ginebra representa hoy para mi, ese lugarcito de cambio. Las dos veces que pasé por Suiza en mi vida ocurrieron durante el otoño-invierno 2023 - 2024 europeo y las dos veces fue para hacer cambios radicales.

Hoy, amigos de Hive y de Pinmapple, me los llevo a pasear por la zona de la Catedral de Ginebra, ubicada en lo que se conoce como casco antiguo de la ciudad, muy famoso por su belleza, por su arquitectura algo medieval que cautiva con su juego de estrechez y amplitud, presente metro a metro.

With my intention to visit the cathedral, placed in different websites as one of the must of Geneva, I ended up walking through different spaces of this beautiful area.

This was one of those walks that I didn't do very "conscientiously", because for my taste, I walked too fast, since I was only in Geneva for two days, that time I took these pictures. And of course, those two days were like 4, since I did the things that normally could be done in that amount of time.

In these cases where I have so little time, I have two options as you can imagine: I choose one or two places to enter or I choose to walk around the city and know the different facades, streets, monuments, nooks and crannies to which the road takes me. Of course I chose this last option.

Con mi intención de visitar la catedral, colocada en diferentes sitios web como uno de los must de Ginebra, terminé por pasear por diferentes espacios de este bello sector.

Este fue uno de esos paseos que no hice muy “a conciencia”, ya que para mi gusto, caminé demasiado rápido, pues tan solo estuve dos días en Ginebra, esa vez que tomé estas fotos. Y claro, esos dos días fueron como 4, ya que hice las cosas que normalmente se podrían realizar en esa cantidad de tiempo.

En estos casos en los que cuento con tan poco tiempo, tengo dos opciones como podrán imaginar: elijo uno o dos lugares para ingresar o elijo recorrer la ciudad y conocer las diferentes fachadas, calles, monumentos, recovecos a los que me lleve el camino. Claro que elegí esta última opción.

In the old town, Gib¡nebra offers us little streets of stone and cobblestones that go up and down while they show you places like the Maison Tavel, which is a home that remains in the city, being this house, the oldest of this site in Switzerland. Currently there are tastings in this place, but I did not enter because I did have in mind to enter the cathedral.

If you walk through this area, you will come to a sector that apparently promises a river, but in truth, when you reach this sector, although there is no watercourse, you can see a line of very beautiful colorful trees, in this case with autumn tones.

En el casco antiguo, Gib¡nebra nos ofrece callecitas de piedra y adoquines que van en subida y bajada mientras te enseñan lugares como el Maison Tavel, que es un hogar que permanece en la ciudad, siendo esta casa, la más antigua de este sitio de Suiza. Actualmente se hacen degustaciones en este lugar, pero no entré porque sí que tenía en mente ingresar a la catedral.

Si uno camina por esta zona, llegará hacia un sector que en apariencia promete un río, pero en verdad, al llegar a este sector, aunque no hay ningún curso de agua, se puede observar una línea de árboles coloridos muy bellos, en este caso con tonos otoñales.

To this landscape is added a beautiful panoramic view of the southwest side of the city, which has the mischievousness to captivate you with its beauty, as if Geneva had not previously had the audacity to seduce you with these beautiful streets of the old town.

As you walk through the area, you will surely come to a street full of flags that will undoubtedly captivate your attention. It is the Rue de l'Hotel de Ville and is a street that has different departments of the state, such as the Economy or Health, among others.

This street proudly displays the fluttering flags of Switzerland, Geneva and of course, the United Nations.

A este paisaje se le agrega una preciosa vista panorámica del lado suroeste de la ciudad, que tiene la picardía de cautivar con su belleza, como si antes Ginebra no hubiese tenido el atrevimiento de seducirte con esas bellas callecitas del casco antiguo.

Al caminar por el sector, es seguro que llegarás a una calle repleta de banderas que cautivarán tu atención indudablemente. Se trata de la Rue de l’Hotel de Ville y es una calle que cuenta con diferentes departamentos del estado, como son el de Economía o el de Salud, entre otros.

Esta calle presenta con orgullo el flamear de las banderas de Suiza, Ginebra y por supuesto, la de Naciones Unidas.

If you ask me if I ever imagined myself in Geneva, well, no, I did not. For me it was a myth while I was studying to become a Geographer in my city, in Mendoza, Argentina. And even more so when I was in high school memorizing UN organizations. Well, destiny took me to know its headquarters and corners of the city of Geneva where you can breathe United Nations.

Si me preguntan si algún día me imaginé en Ginebra, pues no. Para mi era un mito mientras estudiaba la carrera de Geógrafa en mi ciudad, en Mendoza, Argentina. Y más aún lo era cuando estaba en la secundaria memorizando organismos de la ONU. Pues el destino me llevó a conocer su sede central y rincones de la ciudad de Ginebra en donde se respira Naciones Unidas.

Today when I think of Geneva I think of seriousness, luxury, respect, but I also remember the relaxed tones of some sectors, and the attentive policemen in others. Geneva is one of the clearest expressions of globalization, because while it is home to the world's largest human rights organization, and although it is located in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it is also home to the results of a capitalism that is at times overwhelming, such as social inequality, poverty and crime. The latter are far from what we can see in Latin American countries such as Argentina, but it is somewhat ironic to suddenly find this precisely in the "home" of the UN.

Beyond this realistic observation, Geneva is beauty.

Hoy cuando pienso en Ginebra pienso en seriedad, en lujo, en respeto, pero también recuerdo los tonos relajados de algunos sectores, y los policías atentos en otros. Ginebra es una de las expresiones más claras de la globalización, ya que mientras da base a la organización mundial más grande que vela por los derechos humanos y aunque se sitúa en uno de los países más adinerados del mundo, acoge también a los resultados de un capitalismo por momentos abrumador, como es la desigualdad social, la indigencia y la delincuencia. Estos últimos, lejos están de lo que podemos ver en países latinoamericanos como Argentina, pero es algo irónico de pronto, encontrarse con esto justamente en “el hogar” de la ONU.

Más allá de esta observación realista, Ginebra es belleza.
