Melbourne: British Design, Urban Relaxation, and Contrasts

Melbourne is one of those cities that seems to have it all. Suddenly, you find yourself in front of buildings that look old—some of which even reminded me of the Harry Potter movies, even though I wasn’t in the United Kingdom. After all, let’s not forget that Australia was a colony of none other than the United Kingdom, which left its mark not only on the architecture and urban design but also on society itself. There are a great many people from the United Kingdom in Australia; however, it’s also a country known for being thoroughly cosmopolitan, welcoming many people from China, India, Latin America, and Europe as well.

We’re talking about a city located a bit to the south of the country—which is practically an entire, enormous island—and where the climate is quite cool. In fact, I was quite cold in Melbourne during the summer; I had to buy a coat because I hadn’t really brought anything with me, since I’d been traveling through Southeast Asia, where it was extremely hot.

Melbourne: entre el diseño británico, la pausa urbana y sus contrastes

Melbourne es una de esas ciudades que pareciera tenerlo todo. De pronto te encontrás frente a edificaciones que parecen antiguas, algunas que incluso me hacían acordar a la película de Harry Potter aun sin estar en el Reino Unido. Y es que recordemos que Australia fue colonia nada más y nada menos que de este reino, que dejó su impronta no solamente marcada en la arquitectura y el diseño urbano, sino también en la misma sociedad. En Australia hay muchísima gente del Reino Unido; sin embargo, es un país que también se caracteriza por ser completamente cosmopolita, recibiendo a muchas personas de China, de India, de Latinoamérica y también de Europa.

Estamos hablando de una ciudad que está un poco hacia el sur de este país —que es prácticamente una isla entera y enorme— y donde el clima es bastante fresco. De hecho, en verano pasé bastante frío en Melbourne; tuve que comprarme un abrigo porque realmente no había llevado nada, ya que venía viajando por el Sudeste Asiático, donde hacía muchísimo calor.

I loved this city because it’s full of street art, but it’s not your run-of-the-mill art: it’s truly elaborate and so thoughtfully crafted that it makes people stop and stare, be dazzled, take photos, and use the urban space not just as a place to pass through, but also as a place for admiration, contemplation, and pause. It’s a bit contradictory, because we have this completely urbanized city with a lot of activity. Not in the sense of the chaos that exists, for example, in Vietnam, where there’s absolute disorder in the urban fabric and traffic; compared to that, Melbourne is extremely orderly.

Me encantó esta ciudad porque está repleta de arte callejero, pero no es un arte común y corriente: es realmente elaborado y está tan intencionado que hace que la persona se quede mirando, se quede deslumbrada, saque fotos y haga uso del espacio urbano no solo como un sector de tránsito, sino también como un sector de admiración, de contemplación, de pausa. Es un poco contradictorio, porque tenemos esta ciudad completamente urbanizada con bastante movimiento. No en el sentido del caos que existe por ejemplo en Vietnam, donde hay un desorden absoluto en la trama urbana y el tránsito; si lo comparamos con eso, Melbourne es sumamente ordenado.

However, it’s a very large city, so the fact that these pauses, this art, and these moments exist—which are truly expressions that invite pedestrians to stop—is like saying, “Well, even though we’re in a metropolis and constantly on the move, we can take this moment to look, to enjoy.” That’s what I took away from Melbourne: that despite the demands of work, the crowds, and the clearly evident capitalism, there’s a constant pursuit of enjoyment—which I also noticed in Sydney—that invites you to slow down and live in the moment.

Beyond that, I was struck by the fact that I did see many people living on the streets, and not only that, but also people who were completely intoxicated or under the influence of drugs.

Sin embargo, es una ciudad muy grande, por lo tanto, el hecho de que existan estas pausas, este arte, estos momentos —que en verdad son expresiones que invitan al peatón a detenerse— es como decir: "Bueno, a pesar de estar en una metrópoli y en movimiento constante, podemos tomarnos este instante para mirar, para disfrutar". Eso me llevo de Melbourne: que a pesar de tener esa demanda de trabajo, de gente y ese capitalismo que queda claramente expresado, tiene una búsqueda de disfrute constante —que también noté en Sídney— que te invita a frenar y habitar el presente.

Más allá de esto, me chocó que sí vi mucha gente viviendo en la calle, y no solamente eso, sino también personas que estaban completamente embriagadas o bajo el efecto de sustancias.

That’s why I’m sharing here a few streets in Melbourne, some of the city’s hidden corners and nooks that, both day and night, end up winning you over. It’s true that during the hottest parts of the day, the heat is palpable because of all the pavement, but the cold spells are also noticeable.

Similarly, there are neglected spaces that don’t seem so much to have been abandoned by the government itself, but rather by the population: urban areas that end up being taken over by the dark side of a society that may have been unintentionally marginalized or that—as I got the impression in Australia in general (at least in Sydney and Melbourne, where I was)—has marginalized itself. Not so much because of a lack of access to resources, but rather the opposite: because of an excess of access to resources that has led them to make poor decisions, such as spending money on drugs or other narcotics that have ultimately ruined them.

Por eso dejo por acá algunas calles de Melbourne, algunos rincones de esta ciudad y recovecos que, tanto de día como de noche, terminan por enamorar. Es cierto que en los momentos de calor del día la temperatura se siente porque hay mucho pavimento, pero los momentos de frío también se hacen evidentes.

Del mismo modo, sobresalen los espacios descuidados que no parecen tan dejados de lado por el propio gobierno, sino principalmente por la misma población: sectores urbanos de los que termina apropiándose el lado oscuro de una sociedad que quizás ha sido marginada sin quererlo o que, como me dio la impresión en Australia en general —al menos en Sídney y Melbourne, donde estuve—, se ha automarginado. No tanto por una cuestión de falta de acceso a recursos, sino más bien por lo contrario: por un exceso de acceso a recursos que los ha llevado a tomar decisiones equivocadas, como gastar dinero en drogas u otros estupefacientes que al final han terminado por arruinarlos.

Aside from all that, I think it’s important to mention in this post—where I’m talking about the city’s layout—that the transit system is excellent. There’s a card you can use to get around different areas, and the entire central district is completely free; you only have to pay once you leave that designated zone. Surrounding this downtown area are several beautiful parks where you can clear your head—which we’ll discuss later—and the city also boasts a spectacular cathedral that deserves its own post.

Al margen de todo esto, creo que es importante decir en este post —donde estoy hablando del entramado de la ciudad— que el sistema de transporte es excelente. Hay una tarjeta que podés utilizar para moverte por distintos espacios y toda la parte del núcleo central es totalmente gratuita; recién cuando salís de esa zona delimitada sí hay que pagar. Alrededor de este centro hay varios parques hermosos donde una se puede despejar —de los cuales hablaremos más adelante— y la ciudad cuenta también con una catedral espectacular que amerita un post propio.
