The Mekong Delta, an excursion from Saigon that you can't miss

Vietnam is a transformative journey in every sense, but if there's one place I have to highlight above all others, it's the Mekong Delta, known as such by Westerners, although for locals it's the River of Nine Dragons. I visited Phoenix Island, Unicorn Island, and Dragon Island, took a boat ride along the different branches of the river, and tried sweet coconut, coconut candy, Mekong honey, and several other things.

This excursion cost me around €38. We met at a common point in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), in District 1, and set off from there. The tour ended at a Buddhist temple. Without a doubt, sailing through those canals was a wonderful experience.

Delta del Mekong, una excursión desde la ex Saigón que no te podés perder

Vietnam es un viaje transformador en todo sentido, pero si hay un lugar que tengo que destacar por sobre otros es el Delta del Mekong, conocido así por los occidentales, aunque para los locales es el río de los Nueve Dragones. Visité las islas Fénix, Unicornio y la Isla del Dragón, anduve en bote por los distintos cauces del río y probé coco dulce, caramelos de coco, miel de abejas del Mekong y varias cosas más.

Esta excursión me salió alrededor de 38 €, nos reunimos en un punto en común en la ciudad de Ho Chi Minh (ex Saigón), en el Distrito 1, y desde ahí partimos. El recorrido terminó en un templo budista. Sin dudas, navegar por esos canales fue una experiencia maravillosa.

The Mekong Delta is located in southern Vietnam and is one of the most vulnerable areas in the country. It is estimated that by 2050, much of the delta could be seriously affected by sea level rise and land subsidence as a result of climate change and human intervention. The enormous number of buildings and dams around the river contribute to this process. The Mekong, considering its entire course from its source to its mouth, is one of the longest rivers in the world, stretching over 4,000 km. In addition, during the Vietnam War with the United States, this region was a key refuge, as the height and density of the vegetation allowed soldiers to hide easily.

Today, one of the problems facing the delta is water pollution, especially groundwater, which in many areas has high levels of arsenic. This is not a direct consequence of the war, but a natural phenomenon in this type of delta, aggravated by the intensive use of wells and the lack of adequate filtration systems. Even so, it is a reality that affects much of southern Vietnam.

El Delta del Mekong está ubicado en el sur de Vietnam y es una de las zonas más vulnerables del país. Se estima que hacia el año 2050 gran parte del delta podría quedar seriamente afectada por el aumento del nivel del mar y el hundimiento del suelo, producto del cambio climático y de la intervención humana. La enorme cantidad de construcciones y represas alrededor del río contribuyen a este proceso. El Mekong, considerando todo su recorrido desde su nacimiento hasta su desembocadura, es uno de los ríos más largos del mundo, con más de 4.000 km de extensión. Además, durante la guerra de Vietnam con Estados Unidos, esta región fue una zona clave de refugio, ya que la altura y densidad de la vegetación permitía a los soldados esconderse con facilidad.

Hoy en día, una de las problemáticas del delta es la contaminación del agua, especialmente del agua subterránea, que en muchas zonas presenta niveles elevados de arsénico. Esto no es una consecuencia directa de la guerra, sino un fenómeno natural de este tipo de deltas, agravado por el uso intensivo de pozos y la falta de sistemas de filtrado adecuados. Aun así, es una realidad que afecta a gran parte del sur de Vietnam.

During the excursion, we listened to traditional southern folk music and ate traditional regional dishes. Families from different backgrounds live there, deeply rooted in their land, with a strong connection to the place where they were born and raised. Some maintain their own funeral practices, such as burying their dead near their homes or on family land. They do not live in fear, either of ghosts or of coexisting with death, but rather as a way of continuing to share life with their loved ones. Between the humidity, organic waste, and natural conditions of the delta, the area is highly exposed to pollution. I did the tour in open-toed shoes, which in this case is the most advisable: if you get muddy, as can happen, it is much easier to clean yourself with water or a disinfectant wipe. It didn't happen to me, but it's good to keep in mind.

Durante la excursión escuchamos música folclórica típica del sur y también comimos platos tradicionales de la región. Allí viven familias de distintos orígenes, muy arraigadas a su tierra, con una relación muy fuerte con el lugar donde nacieron y crecieron. Algunas mantienen prácticas funerarias propias, como enterrar a sus fallecidos cerca de sus casas o en terrenos familiares. No lo viven con miedo, ni a los fantasmas ni a la convivencia con la muerte, sino como una forma de seguir compartiendo la vida con sus seres queridos. Entre la humedad, los residuos orgánicos y las condiciones naturales del delta, la zona está muy expuesta a la contaminación. Yo hice el recorrido con calzado abierto, que en este caso es lo más recomendable: si te embarrás, como puede pasar, es mucho más fácil limpiarte con agua o una toallita desinfectante. A mí no me pasó, pero es bueno tenerlo en cuenta.

The guide explained that there are two different types of coconut. We were given coconut water, which comes from coconuts that grow on palm trees on dry land. On the other hand, there is river coconut, from which water is not extracted, but which is used to make sweets and other derivative products. Both are widely consumed, both in the Delta and in the rest of Vietnam. This region is fundamental to the country, as it supplies large quantities of fish and seafood to much of Vietnam, being one of the main productive areas in the country.

Other interesting facts: snake wine, which is quite strong, is produced in the area. I didn't want to try it, but it's very common for them. They also work a lot with bee bread, from which they extract an intense, bluish-turquoise honey that is truly delicious. All of this coexists with the traces left by the war between the United States and Vietnam. The country was divided: the north was socialist and the south had a capitalist system. That separation left visible marks that can still be seen today on some boats and in certain areas of the region.

El guía nos explicó que existen dos tipos distintos de coco. A nosotros nos dieron agua de coco, que proviene de los cocos que crecen en palmeras sobre tierra firme. En cambio, está el coco de río, del cual no se extrae agua, sino que se utiliza para hacer dulces y otros productos derivados. Ambos se consumen muchísimo, tanto en el Delta como en el resto de Vietnam. Esta región es fundamental para el país, ya que abastece con enormes cantidades de pescado y productos marinos a gran parte de Vietnam, siendo una de las principales zonas productivas del país.

Otros datos curiosos: en la zona se produce vino de serpiente, bastante fuerte. Yo no quise probarlo, pero es algo muy común para ellos. También trabajan mucho con el pan de abeja, de donde extraen una miel intensa, de un color turquesa azulado, realmente deliciosa. Todo esto convive con las huellas que dejó la guerra entre Estados Unidos y Vietnam. El país estuvo dividido: el norte socialista y el sur con un sistema capitalista. Esa separación dejó marcas visibles que todavía hoy pueden verse en algunas embarcaciones y en ciertos sectores de la región.

Something important to keep in mind: during the tour, the guide will take you to many places to buy things. I didn't see it as a scam, because you pay for the tour to learn about the country, but it is true that approximately 60% of the stops are shops. It's up to each person to decide what to do. Quite a lot of time is spent in these places, although there are also some very valuable moments. When you sit down to have tea or eat, they bring you things to try. This is typical throughout the country: Vietnam is not a rich country and many people earn their living this way. It is also common to leave a tip, for example to the person who drives the boat on the river or to the guide, as in other parts of the world, but it is by no means mandatory.

Algo importante a tener en cuenta: durante el recorrido, el guía te llevará a muchos lugares para comprar cosas. No lo vi como una estafa, porque pagas por el recorrido para aprender sobre el país, pero es cierto que aproximadamente el 60 % de las paradas son tiendas. Depende de cada persona decidir qué hacer. Se pasa bastante tiempo en estos lugares, aunque también hay algunos momentos muy valiosos. Cuando te sientas a tomar té o a comer, te traen cosas para probar. Esto es típico en todo el país: Vietnam no es un país rico y mucha gente se gana la vida de esta manera. También es habitual dejar propina, por ejemplo, a la persona que conduce la barca por el río o al guía, como en otras partes del mundo, pero no es en absoluto obligatorio.

This excursion is a must, you can't miss it. If you're someone with OCD who doesn't like dirt, smells, or gets easily shocked, I want you to know something: I'm like that. And while at times I felt a little disgusted as we moved forward, I enjoyed it very much. Today I look back and am grateful that I went for it. I highly recommend it.

Esta excursión es un must, no podés perdértela. Si sos una persona con TOC, que no le gusta la mugre, los olores o se impresiona fácil, quiero que sepas algo: yo soy así. Y si bien en algunos momentos me dio un poco de asquito mientras avanzábamos, la disfruté muchísimo. Hoy miro hacia atrás y agradezco haberme animado. La recomiendo totalmente.
