This is Bangkok! The alive city between buildings | Monomad Challenge

If there is something that calls my attention and puts me in stand-by mode, it is the amount of buildings that I’ve seen in the Asian Southeast region of the world.

Even though I was looking for calm, after the unsuccessful volunteering experiences, I decided to decline all of them, and just make my own trip in Asia.

I had to lose plane tickets and buy new ones, and creating the proper routes to save as much money as possible, I ended up spending time in big cities, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, Bangkok.

For me, as a Geographer, this is extremely rich, as it allowed me to live for some days in reality, to see what’s beyond IG pictures, and how life really works in these cities and countries.

Anyway, all of them are great cities and destinations, also very touristic, but for me a great lesson in life is that it's much better to invest and go straightaway to the coast, avoiding this heavy mood of big cities life.

¡Esto es Bangkok! La ciudad viva entre edificios

Si hay algo que me llama la atención y me deja en modo espera, es la cantidad de edificios que he visto en la región asiática del sudeste del mundo.

Aunque buscaba tranquilidad, tras las experiencias fallidas como voluntario, decidí rechazarlas todas y simplemente hacer mi propio viaje por Asia.

Tuve que perder los billetes de avión y comprar otros nuevos, y al crear las rutas adecuadas para ahorrar todo el dinero posible, acabé pasando tiempo en grandes ciudades, como Hanói, Ho Chi Minh y Bangkok.

Para mí, como geógrafa, esto es muy enriquecedor, ya que me permitió vivir durante unos días en la realidad, ver lo que hay más allá de las fotos de Instagram y cómo funciona realmente la vida en estas ciudades y países.

De todos modos, todas ellas son grandes ciudades y destinos, también muy turísticos, pero para mí una gran lección de vida es que es mucho mejor invertir y dirigirse directamente a la costa, evitando el ambiente pesado de la vida en las grandes ciudades.

The truth is annoying for me, at the end of the day, because… if I would be only on the beach, I would have been wondering how the city looks like, how it is to be there for a week. So, it seems to be fair, I satisfied part of my desire.

In this context, big cities such as the massive Bangkok, created for me a particular grey landscape.

Many times I’ve felt like I was in a 30s movie, but with the infrastructure of the XXI century.

Grey buildings, grey cars, grey air, grey people. Even if something appears in colors, in my mind it turns grey automatically.

And it made me remember an old post that I shared in the winter of 2023, when I was working in the French Alps, and one day I saw the path and it was all dark green pines with white snow… Just a monochromatic view in real life.

This is similar, but not exactly the same, since in my way of seeing, any color turns grey, it’s like I have a filter in my mind…

La verdad es que, al final, me molesta, porque... si estuviera solo en la playa, me habría preguntado cómo es la ciudad, cómo sería estar allí una semana. Así que, parece justo, satisfice parte de mi deseo.

En este contexto, las grandes ciudades, como la enorme Bangkok, crearon para mí un paisaje gris particular.

Muchas veces me he sentido como si estuviera en una película de los años 30, pero con la infraestructura del siglo XXI.

Edificios grises, coches grises, aire gris, gente gris. Incluso si algo aparece en colores, en mi mente se vuelve gris automáticamente.

Y eso me hizo recordar una antigua publicación que compartí en el invierno de 2023, cuando trabajaba en los Alpes franceses y un día vi el camino y todo eran pinos de color verde oscuro con nieve blanca... Solo una vista monocromática en la vida real.

Esto es similar, pero no exactamente igual, ya que, según mi forma de ver las cosas, cualquier color se vuelve gris, es como si tuviera un filtro en mi mente...

That’s why I decided to make this post. Bangkok thrived in the middle of a spiritual and ancient tradition, but companies, business, architecture, tourism, and the hunger of “nothing is enough to fill the belly of capitalism”, made this city one more giant among the capitals of the world.

Beautiful for some people, devourer for others.

I share here these pictures, in some of the walks, in some of the attempts of making a healthy life even though the air I breathe becomes more from the vehicles than from the environment itself.

Por eso decidí hacer esta publicación. Bangkok prosperó en medio de una tradición espiritual y antigua, pero las empresas, los negocios, la arquitectura, el turismo y el hambre de «nada es suficiente para llenar el estómago del capitalismo» convirtieron a esta ciudad en una más de las gigantes entre las capitales del mundo.

Hermosa para algunas personas, devoradora para otras.

Comparto aquí estas fotos, de algunos de los paseos, de algunos de los intentos de llevar una vida saludable, aunque el aire que respiro provenga más de los vehículos que del propio medio ambiente.
