Visit with me a village almost on the border between France and Italy: Menton

Hello to my dear friends of Pinmapple!!! It's a pleasure to be with you once again! Today I come to take you to Menton, a little town in France that is very close to Nice and Monaco (it is also close to Cannes).

This town is located on the south coast of this beautiful country, and it has a little known peculiarity, and that is that French and Italian are spoken there. I never imagined that these two languages would coexist somewhere, but not only did I end up learning about this, but traveling around the old continent I realized that there are a lot of cases where on the borders between countries there are villages and communities that speak several languages, belonging to different administrative units. It is a very nice thing.

Visita conmigo un pueblo casi en la frontera entre Francia e Italia: Mentón

Hola a mis queridos amigos de Pinmapple!! Es un placer estar con ustedes una vez más! Hoy vengo a llevarlos a Mentón, un pueblito de Francia que está muy cerca de Niza y de Mónaco (también está cerca de Cannes).

Este pueblo se encuentra en la costa sur de este bello país, y tiene una particularidad poco conocida, y es que en él se habla francés e italiano. Jamás imaginé que estos dos idiomas coexistieran en algún lugar, pero no solo terminé por enterarme de esto, sino que viajando por el viejo continente me di cuenta que hay una gran cantidad de casos en donde en las fronteras entre los países existen pueblos y comunidades que hablan varios idiomas, pertenecientes a las diferentes unidades administrativas. Es algo muy bonito.

How to get there?

To get to chin you can do it very easily if you are in Nice, taking public transport, you will see that in just over half an hour you are already in another town.

Para llegar a mentón lo puedes hacer muy fácilmente si te encuentras en Niza, tomando el transporte público, verás que en poco más de media hora ya estás en otro pueblo.

Its landscapes and people

Although the landscape towards the Mediterranean Sea is very similar to what you will see in Nice, the community living in Menton is quite different, and there are some variations in its architecture.

Towards the Sea, you will have the beautiful body of water with a beach that has no sand but some nice white rocks. They are beautiful but wear sneakers if you plan to walk there because barefoot really hurts the feet, hehe.

In front of the sea not only the city extends, but also a beautiful set of hills and mountains very greenish that, if you go with time, I recommend you to visit, because they have many points of attraction, most of them corresponding to medieval times, which invite you to know them after an interesting trekking. The day I went there it was quite cloudy and in the photos you can see how the hills disappear under the clouds.

Sus paisajes y su gente

Aunque el paisaje hacia el Mar Mediterráneo es muy similar al que verás en Niza, la comunidad que habita en Mentón es bien diferente, y hay algunas variaciones en su arquitectura.

Hacia el Mar, tendrás el hermoso cuerpo de agua con una playa que no tiene arena sino unas bonitas rocas blancas. Son hermosas pero lleva zapatillas si piensas caminar por ahí porque de verdad que descalza duelen los pies, jeje.

Frente al mar no solo se extiende la ciudad, sino también un hermoso juego de cerros y montañas muy verdosos que, si vas con tiempo, te recomiendo visitar, pues cuentan con numerosos puntos de atracción, la mayoría correspondientes a la época medieval, que te invitan a conocerlos tras un interesante trekking. El día que fui estaba bastante nublado y en las fotos podrán observar cómo los cerros desaparecen bajo las nubes.

And in its architecture although some yellows and terracottas show similarity with what Nice offers us, the streets are narrower and everything is much smaller, and is that it really is a village while Nice is already a city.

The people in Menton are extremely friendly. While in Nice I noticed a certain seriousness in some places (although they are much friendlier than in other French cities like Paris for example), in Menton there is a certain tendency to smile and a more Italian vibe, with a strong but friendly character. At least that's what it seemed to me.

Y en su arquitectura aunque algunos amarillos y terracotas muestran similitud con lo que nos ofrece Niza, las calles son más estrechas y todo es bastante más pequeño, y es que realmente es un pueblo mientras que Niza ya pasa a ser una ciudad.

La gente en Mentón es sumamente amable. Mientras que en Niza noté cierta seriedad en algunos lugares (aunque sí son mucho más amigables que en otras ciudades francesas como París por ejemplo), en Mentón hay cierta tendencia a la sonrisa y a la vibra más italiana, con carácter fuerte pero simpático. Al menos eso fue lo que me pareció a mí.

When to travel and how much time to dedicate to Menton?

Menton is a "yes" if you are in the south of France, so I recommend you to go there, as it is a getaway that will take only a day (or less, I did it in half a day, but I admit I was too rushed in my walk), and it will offer you a look of this area of France very particular. As I said, it has these Italian tints that indicate that the border is near, in fact you will see in one of the photos the sign that says Italie on the street, pointing the direction by which to get to this country.

I would not stay more than a day in Menton, but if you like quieter and more relaxed cities, it is an excellent option for you to stay there for several days and from there travel to Nice and other larger cities. Also if you want to do some trekking, you should either travel exclusively for that, or stay two days in Menton, to know and enjoy the city without having to be running and also do a good trekking.

¿Cuándo viajar y cuanto tiempo dedicarle a Mentón?

Mentón es un “sí” si estás en el sur de Francia, por lo que te recomiendo que te acerques, ya que es una escapada que tomará tan solo un día (o menos, yo lo hice en medio día, pero reconozco que estuve demasiado apurada en mi paseo), y te ofrecerá una mirada de esta zona de Francia muy particular. Como comenté, tiene estos tintes italianos que indican que la frontera está cerca, de hecho verán en una de las fotos el cartel que dice Italie en la calle, señalando la dirección por la cual llegar a este país.

No me quedaría más de un día en Mentón, pero si te gustan las ciudades más tranquilas y relajadas, es una excelente opción para que te quedes allí varios días y desde ahí viajes a Niza y a otras ciudades más grandes. Además si quieres hacer algún trekking, o bien deberías viajar exclusivamente para eso, o quedarte dos días en Mentón, para conocer y disfrutar la ciudad sin tener que estar corriendo y también hacer un buen trekking.

It is highly recommended in summer, but spring and autumn are also good options, because the weather is nice, and on hot days Menton has a beautiful mas to enjoy.

Es muy recomendable en verano, pero la primavera y el otoño también son buenas opciones, pues el clima es amable, y en días de calor Mentón tiene un hermoso mas para disfrutar.
