Bulbs in, and mulching with friends...

I heard from a friend that it was time to start planting bulbs in Australia... late Autumn, early Winter I think is the time... I really should get a calender for this sort of thing, perhaps there is an online calender that I could attach to my Google calender. I'm such a noob, and I never remember when to do things... if I was left to my own devices, I would just plant things when I opened the packets. But apparently, it doesn't really work well like that... so, when we finally get our veggie garden up and running, I think I will need to be more disciplined with that sort of thing.

So, I headed out to the shops and bought a bunch of mixed tulips and daffodils... tulips to remind us of our former adopted homeland. I'm nostalgic like that, even if my wife doesn't think that they will do too well here.

So, two trench rows dug... in hindsight, I probably should have dug them a bit deeper, but there were lots of rocks and roots that needed breaking through and I only had a certain amount of time before I needed to pick up the kids from school. I'm really starting to like the mattock... definitely my best friend out of all the hand tools!

Here is some of the unwanted bits and pieces that I dragged out.... some small to medium rocks that will be repurposed for the garden path edges, and roots from a tree that had already been cut down and recently ground down... well, the stump was ground down, but the further roots are still waiting for me to get them out. I'm not entirely sure why the previous owner let a tree start growing under the eaves of the house... it was starting to get to a height where it was lifting up the gutters!

When the kids got back, they helped place the tulips and daffodil bulbs... I had thought that we would have one row of each... but they decided to mix it up and do alternate bulbs in both rows.

Meanwhile, on a day that was much LESS freezing than today... I continued around with the mulching. Probably on the late end of things for this... but I'm doing it anyway as it still needs to be completed. Plus, it will be in place for whenever it supposed to be done and it will suppress the weeds and grass that we don't want.... and we still have a woodchip pile that needs to be used!

As always, whenever I'm out doing the garden work, the little peewees and the magpies drop by to get easy feeds. I guess, as I'm turning up the soil they see a chance to grab a fat worm or grub that gets brought to the surface!

... and they take the chance to inspect my handiwork!

Homesick !

Tulips do best when winter is cold like 5 Celsius or below. I plant them loosely in a group normally (a row is what professional growers do for easy harvest!)

Yes, a touch homesick!

I had considered just digging out a small block... but I figured it might look better in rows. Or maybe I'm a pro gardener?

It's so nice to get out and dig in the dirt. Here's to your new plantings in your new home!

Ah yes, it does feel good to be working the earth! Hopefully, they will take!

Bulbs pretty much always take so you should get at least one year out of them. I like that they are mixed up.

Ah good! I had a friend who harvested and stored them... only to lose them to mice!

If all that you have planted does well you will have lots of beautiful flowers. During this time of year, our home is littered with vases of cut flowers, always a beautiful sight.

Having the kids get involved is always a good thing and may produce future gardeners.

Yes, I'm hoping to get the kids more involved... but the older one prefers to be inside... the young one likes to help, but is a bit limited in what she can do!
