Dirt Moving and Inverted Haircuts

I didn't have a crazy amount of time to do gardening this week as I've been preparing for our ensemble concert, and that means lots of running around, publicity, and administration stuff to make sure that everything runs smoothly on the day. At some point, I will also do the music stuff!

Anyway, on days that are decent with the weather, I try to put in an hour or so here and there... just to keep things moving and in some sort of shape... otherwise it is overwhelming. My wife prefers a different approach, with doing a big chunk in one go. I definitely prefer lots of little chunks...

Anyway, first on the list of little tasks... preparing an area to accept some of the soil from the future veggie and retaining wall site. All that soil that gets levelled off needs to go elsewhere, and I have a few places where it can go. The first section is near the carport where I want a soil buffer between the carport and the mulch of about 1.5-2 metres. Eventually, I plan on topping off this area with river pebbles... but that is a project for further down the track!

However, to prepare the area, I need to get rid of the weeds, grass, and leaf debris. Well, maybe the leaf debris can stay, but there is so much of it coming down that I might as well scoop up what is here to dump into the green waste bin.

Next up in this same area is the trimming (inverted haircut!) of the new bush-like plants that were planted last year. They are growing quite nicely in this spot, and I recently restaked them to help them grow straighter instead of seeking the morning Sun! However, there were a few spots where they are just dragging along the ground and the gardener next door told me that I should trim those spots on all the plants in our garden. So, that was added to my list of things to do... and these were the first few to receive a little bit of an underside trim.

Making for a much neater underside that he said would help them grow better and make it easier to clean the debris underneath.

Meanwhile, at the levelling site at the back... I'm steadily making progress on this section. Everytime that I'm out, I get a few of these peewee friends. Little birds with a painfully loud cry that come down and hang around for an easy feed on newly uncovered worms and grubs! The magpies also know to come down, but they stay away from me... whilst these little guys come right up.

There are a few of these plants/buses with razer sharp needles scattered around the garden. There are two near the front corner that I might just leave... those are well established and out of the way... but there are a few smaller ones that are in annoying parts of the garden (near paths!) that are going to get uprooted and taken out. I've already marked them for removal... but I'm just procrastinating as they are really quite painful when you get a needle through the glove or clothes!

On the sloped driveway, we have this little section that I have been putting some of the soil on... but it keeps getting washed away. I had considered putting in the salvaged stone/cement drainage crescents to channel away the water, but I'm starting to think that I might transplant some of the hardy grass roots here to help secure the section instead... I will have to pass that one past my wife though...

gardening is something that can make you relax, you will definitely find that freshness and your wife is very attractive because she also likes gardening, I hope that what you plant today will bear good fruit in the future and can be used.

Yeah, me too! And I think the garden likes it too. It makes it more manageable and you feel as if you're making progress rather than being overwhelmed.

The natives will love a trim.

Yep, and I just don't have the stamina, strength, or time to put in more than little bits!
