Growing Up, Getting Older

Growing Up, Getting older.jpg

Ahhh... that horrific money sink that is known as the Agricultural or Royal show. Anyway, it is still a nice day out for the family... even if I have to remind the kids that they can't do the showbags or the rides until we have looked at the various exhibitions, crafts, and animals that are also at the show (and are the actual reason for the Show!).

Usually they ask a few times at the start, and then I tell them that if they ask again or that if they start grumbling then we are going straight home. So fat, that has been a successful tactic... no idea how much longer that will stay successful though. I'm hopeful that it will remain so for quite a bit longer (at least until the older one just goes without us and with her friends instead....).

And when they have learnt to stop asking and waiting for the bags and rides, well.. they start to actually enjoy the things that they are seeing and doing in front of them. We saw a cool Liquid Nitrogen display, some dog training exercises, pig races, lots of arts and crafts, lots of food testing, robots, and even some motorcross stunts! So much more stuff to see and experience... and it was worth it for me to re-book my flight back to a stupidly early hour just to be able to do it all with them.

However, by the end of the afternoon... I was feeling pretty dazed.... and the time was coming for the REAL reason why I had re-booked the flight. My older child now loves doing the puke-inducing rides (not the crazy ones... but they are still pretty hair-raising). My wife has a bit of a fragile back, and it isn't a good idea for her to risk going on those rides.

Unfortunately, I'm a complete wuss (always have been) when it comes to these rides whilst my wife has been the more resilient one.... but sadly, I'm the only that is able to go one them. So... I find myself riding these things in sheer terror while my older girl is having the time of her life screaming her head off next to me... meanwhile, I clutching on for dear life, feeling my stomach lurch and go everywhere... and stepping off the ride with wobbly legs and a head that is still spinning round and round! Everyone else thinks it is hilarious... and at the very least, my older girl is really appreciative that I go through hell just so that she can ride the ride (and this time, even caught a stupidly early flight...).

This time, even the little on was just high enough to go on one of the spinning lurching things... and this was the first time that she had gone on a "grown-up" ride. It started off slowly enough... and she was enjoying it, and then it got really fast... and you saw sheer terror on her face... and then she started screaming and loving it (with me and her older sister holding fast to her hands). I honestly thought that she was going to come off crying... but as soon as it stopped, she was saying that she loved it! CRAP....

Anyway, as my older girl gets more adventurous with the rides... I think I have reached the end of my usefulness as a fellow rider. Next year, I'm going to ask one of her older cousins to go with her... or maybe one of her friends. I can't do it anymore...

Meanwhile, I'm super happy with the Ferris Wheel... which we took after a couple of the fast rides to allow me to cool down. It was slow, so my wife was able to join us... but she is terrified of heights (you should see her on planes...). This was the best ride for me... and the girls loved it as well, but my wife... she was gripping that centre pole for dear life!

She said that next time... she will chance her back... and we will swap. I will do the high stuff... and she will do the fast stuff. Good for me... I'm not that keen on feeling like I'm going to throw up and collapse on the ground anymore!

When the Ferris wheel makes you happy you know you're getting old!
!lol
My son always wants to go on the big roller coasters now, and I usually end up going too. They just aren't as much fun as they were when I was young!
