Looking Ahead

No resolutions for me... I'm not really a fan of making commitments for my future self at some arbitrary point in the year that doesn't really seem that much different to any other point in time. But I do have things that I would like to work more upon in the near to distant future...

Much of the things that are need to be done relate more to the fact that we are now a year into our return back to Australia... and there are many things that still needs to be done with regard to our house, our life, and work. Everything has progressed faster and better than we had ever expected... but then again, when you are setting your expectations to be pretty low with a wait and see how it pans out attitude, then pretty much any progress is going to be above that! Still... much better than we could have ever hoped for, even with some unexpected road bumps along the way!

So, the first and most critical thing is the house... there is nothing wrong with it (hopefully...), and now that we have the most critical things sorted (stormwater and sewage redone), we will hopefully be sorted for quite a long time. Of course, there is still the large work of dealing with a few more of the big trees... but we have that pencilled in and budgeted for. Thankfully, our arborist has been really kind to us and quoted a very friendly rate... otherwise we would be bottle-necked for at least another year or two.

On the garden front, there is much to be done... finishing the mulching... rebuilding the paving and pathing... redo-ing the retaining walls... getting the vegetable and fruit trees moving along. Lots of things, but we have lots of help from the extended family with their incredible wealth of knowledge and practical skills! We are learning lots everytime!

Inside the house... we are almost completely off the gas, with only a stovetop being the only thing dependent on that. Reverse cycle air-conditioning and hot water are both on electrical heat-pumps, and they are working like a gem! None of it connected to the internet as I wasn't really keen on that... which I think that the installers were a bit weirded out by! Meanwhile, we are starting to find places for everything.. although an eventual studio extension will still be needed to keep the music instruments a bit separated from our living area! That one is more of a long term project! The kids want to paint their room... and we will need to put up some shade cloth in the patio area... so, painting first and then lights... and then shade cloth.

Kids-wise... they are growing older, and one will start to hit the tween ages soon. We are finding that her group of friends here are a bit of a mix of "older" and "younger" in outlooks... we find that our one is still much on the "younger" side of things, and if we aren't too careful might be influenced a bit too much by the flawed knowledge of the ones that are trying to act "older". Something to keep in mind...

... still, they are really happy to be around family and their school... they have managed the transition much better than we had ever expected!

Meanwhile, on the work front... wow, both my wife and I have been pressed into service quite quickly. We both have moments of missing our work and colleagues back in Europe... things are quite different here... but there is opportunity for us to help grow the local community and to make meaningful and lasting contributions. Still... it can sometimes be a bit painful to remember what we have given up in our previous lives... but we are on the whole, much happier with the entire balance of life.

I still am trying to launch my own ensemble... it is uncertain, but I have found a decent amount of support, of which I both incredibly humbled and grateful for. Without much of the support, it would be essentially impossible for this pet project to launch... This coming couple of months will be a slog to lock down programming, performers, and to make connections to launch more projects further ahead in time! It is daunting and exciting at the same time!

So... many things to think about for this coming year. A great amount of uncertainty, but at least we are on a stable basis for the foreseeable future.... and that is an important thing in its own right!

I was thinking about this arbitrary time thing last night, and it must be even stranger in Australia where you don't have the turning of the light and lengthening days to affect you (just the opposite, maybe)? 😍

It does seem that once you set in place some goals (or actions), other things follow along naturally. I'm planning some changes to my house (a long awaited bigger kitchen) and that is dictating a lot of other activity (off-load things we don't need any more) and plans (what are we going to sit/sleep on?).

The challenge here (the UK) seems to be finding a builder who is available to do it.

Things seem to be flowing for you, I hope it continues.

Happy New Year!
