Luxury Meals at Home!

Wow... this is a bit of a giant blast from the past! So, it is a bit of a thing that my wife and I do, that when it is one of our birthdays... we treat ourselves to a really nice restaurant meal. When we were living in Europe, we would often do a super big treat, and book ourselves into a Michelin starred restaurant... generally just a one star place, but those are pretty damn impressive anyway!

But during the Corona-time, the restaurants were all shut... and quite a few of them ended up failing soon afterwards. So, we couldn't do what we had originally wanted to do for my wife's birthday. But I did find our that many of the places had morphed to pre-prepared packages where you could just finish off the presentation and cooking at home... and so, I decided to try out a local restaurant's version of a stay-at-home meal. Savarin, which was a place that we had eaten at before... at their actual restaurant.

You did have to order online, and then do a curb-side pickup... and it was nice to see that everything was nicely presented even though it was not quite the usual routine!

... and then, getting home... you would see the whole thing neatly packaged... quite confusing to start off with, but luckily, there were instructions!

So, you had various options for ordering... depending on the choice of meat or vegetarian options that you wanted.

... and there were also written instructions for the preparations as well! Which was going to be useful, as my kids were helping me prepare the meals before my wife got home!

Thankfully, they had really done proper job with he whole thing, and had even prepared video guides on the presentation and everything! So, it was quite easy to follow along... and not screw it up!

So, the various boxes that weren't needed immediately for the next course would have to live on the floow... we only had a small kitchen in this house, and the little dinging table was busy being used!

... our kids insisted that it had to be a white tablecloth meal... so, this was the closest that we had!

... and there needed to be a menu and a maitre d'hotel to show the special guest to her table!

... and then the first course was ready to begin! I prepared the food, but the kids prepared the presentation. Definitely, they were going to be much better than me at that!

Interestingly enough, they did suggest this sous vide method of preparing the meats and sauces for the main meal. I guess that was going to be the best way to make sure everything was heated up without destroying the flavour and pre-cooking that was done at the restaurant.

... ah, and everyone did enjoy the desserts that were included as well! Definitely the most fun to prepare and eat!

So, a nice memory from the past... near the start of the Corona-time. A very interesting way for high-class luxury restaurants to try and survive the pandemic restrictions... but sadly, in the end, it didn't really work for most of them.
