Next Little Garden Tasks

Next Little Garden Tasks.jpg

The garden is being pretty intensively worked upon from my wife and I over these last few days and the coming few weeks. We are both home, and we have a relatively open schedule until the middle of Novemeber. That means that we can both dedicate a few hours each day to doing garden stuff. Plus, my mother just arrived, and she is crazy keen to get to work on the garden as well! In fact, she was amazed by how much it has changed since she was last here... mostly thanks to my father-in-law who has put in some serious work on the outer garden with the mulching and clearing. I think he was pretty keen to test out his new chainsaw toy...

Anyway, there are always the larger scale work to be finished.. drainage and retaining walls, but there is also a great amount of smaller tasks that need to be also completed.

Over the weekend, my wife went to the native plant sale that the local botanical society holds every half year. It is a great place to pick up cheap little saplings.... but you have to be there really early, as they sell out incredibly fast.. and the queues of people wanting to pick up new native additions to their garden are pretty long!

So, she managed to pick up 10 saplings for about 100 AUD, which is a real steal. At a garden nursery, you would be expecting to be paying much much more than that. But they would also be a bit more established... these need to go in soon, or they will start wilting and suffering. My wife has been researching about which plants would work best in our gardens... we have a 360 degree view of the area, and so we get the complete range of full sun, through to the shade... and varying levels of dampness in the different sectors of our block.

She has marked out the places where she wants these planted... and it will be my job to dig the holes and get them into the ground before they die!

A little bit more clearing needs to happen in this area. We had weeded out a huge overgrowth of stickyweed... that will need to have more done to disrupt the leftover root structures, but now that we can actually see the plants that that it was choking, it will be easier to deal with... as long as we don't let it get out of hand again!

The plants in the foreground (the flax like ones n the middle)... are due to be removed. We want to put in a few of the new additions in that area to give us a bit of nicer ground cover... and perhaps a bit of screening for the front bedroom of the house.

The garden beds immediately in front of the house are now nicely mulched and looking pretty decent now. We will have to work our way further around to complete this particular side of the house. I also picked up some little solar lamps to light the path... the path is really uneven, and will need to be relaid in the future... but for the moment, just seeing it in the dark should be good enough.

This plant, I wanted to tie back. It is a really nice blooming plant that attracts a crazy amount of bees! I'm sure that there is a bees nest up in the trees somewhere... when I'm on the roof, I can hear quite a lot of buzzing from somewhere up there. I'm not really keen on walking and brushing past this when there are so many bees that are busily minding their own business... they might think that I'm trying to attack them!

On the other hand, the advice from our parents-in-law (who know their gardening better than we do)... is to just wait for the blooms to finish, and then cut it back. So... I'll wait and do that... hopefully, I won't get stung in the meantime!

It is a large suburban block... so, for a town/city it is large... but not for rural area!

Just go off the path at that point?

It looks like a huge property! How many acres do you have?

Yeah, I go off the path... but it does jut out quite a bit!

It isn't huge... but it is large for a city/town block. Around 1250 square metres... so a bit under a third of an acre?

Somehow it looks more like a couple of acres 😲 I hope you will be able to get everything in order soon 🙌

Being an early bird truly pays off my dear friend @bengy for you were able to buy saplings at cheaper prices. And of course, you really have a great space for gardening. In my side, I am having a limited space but I am finding ways to plant and grow. I hope you are having a great time. Keep safe.

Ah... sometimes I think that the larger space is a different curse... so much to stay on top of!

So true. A larger space would really make us more innovative. More plants to grow and harvest. I wish you success on this endeavor. Have a great day my friend and take care.
