Old ways do work!

So, weeding is always going to be a constant pain in the arse chore... especially on these paved areas. We have generally just hit them with a dilute vinegar solution, and that seems to work for a little bit... but not very well. And then there is the old fashioned pulling them out, but that is quite difficult when they are wedged in the cracks, and you often only get the top leafy bits and not the roots. So, you end up having to do it all over again in a few weeks anyway.

Seeing as we were using a grass/weed herbicide on a large patch... and it looks like we might even be losing the fight on that front! We were considering using it on the path and paved areas as well...

... but my mother-in-law suggested using boiling water instead. My wife and I had a similar first reaction... really? Would that actually work?

... and surprisingly enough, yes it does. It kills the leaves, and as a bonus the soil is now wet and the roots just come straight out... or they are cooked! So, now... my wife will boil a full kettle for her morning lemon juice and hot water drink... and then just pour the rest on a small patch of the offending weeds! Then, a couple of hours later... one of us will just walk by and pull them out! Easy! Sure, it isn't going to do large patches... but it really is quite handy!

So, old ways do work... but maybe not on the large chunks... we might be only the losing end of a rate of change balance there! But, maybe... in combination with other methods, we could tip the balance with a tiny push constantly every morning!

My father in law does have a different method though... he takes a high pressure water hose to the weeds and just blasts them out!

The climbing roses are now settling in nicely, and have a few blooms again... I think it is now getting to the point where I need to set up those trainers... its on the list... right after digging a few more trenches for the retaining wall. And being a musician...

Yeehaw, partner! This blog post is as refreshing as a cool breeze on a hot day! Keep boilin' that water, pullin' them weeds, and tippin' the balance with your tiny push every mornin'! It's all about steady progress, just like wranglin' those weeds. Keep up the good work, cowboy!

Between our pavers and on our gravel/pebbles/rocks my husband has been torching the weeds with a flame thrower! 😂🤣

It also works great, but maybe less dangerous here because we live in a wetter place. 😄

I have seen the flame thrower option! Looks like dangerous fun... But does it get the root structure?

Oh my, I will remember this trick! We have loads of weeds growing between the bricks, and even now my rocket plants have been popping up in the pavement. Such a simple trick to get rid of these pesky little growers. Thanks for sharing! Happy gardening.

Oh, so it appears that we are the only people who didn't know about it!

Strange right! Sometimes the most common of knowledge does not get passed on because of its familiarity among the people who share it. But that common knowledge is the most important bits of information to right down and share.
