People at Work are Weird...

Sigh... my wife and I have pretty much been performers all our lives... we just play music, do it to the best of our ability, and then leave. We're both sort of shy-ish people who like our own company and the peace and quiet away from other people. We aren't unfriendly by any means... but we are ill at ease in a group, and we tend to choose who we want to talk and be friends with quite carefully. Mostly, we have no interest in small talk and workplace drama... and we are often not very interested in talking about music or ourselves. So, suffice to say... most of our friends are NOT musicians!

Since returning back to Australia... both of us have been thrown back into situations where we have had to work with groups of musicians, teachers, and otherwise... and both of us have found the experience to be weirdly "dramatic". It is quite strange how drama and intrigue and all that stupid stuff is quite interesting to some people... in fact, I would even believe that that is what makes them wake up in the morning. However, for me and my wife... we couldn't think of anything more boring... we like playing music, and just doing that well. All the jostling for position and power... and intrigues of who to be nice to, and who to be naughty to... well, just be nice to everyone! There is often very little cause to be mean to anyone... and even less cause to be "seen" talking to the right people in the room... talk to someone who you like talking to... and not to someone who will be the right person to advance your position or whatever it is!

It is quite funny in some ways how some people are fully immersed in all that crap though... I had one situation where someone said that I was playing a shrewd political game by trying to stay out of it all... and that I was a better political player than I had let on. Sigh... honestly, I stay out of it... because it bores me! I like playing the violin, and I will play with the players that I enjoy playing with... the end! Why is that so hard to understand?

My wife had a recent work meeting where she kept getting cornered about her view and positions on something in the workplace... and she would always just demur and not answer... because essentially there was no position to take. She didn't care... she plays piano, and does it well. The end...

Interestingly enough, I have had some people say that they wish they could do the same... but the weird part is that they just don't (good morning, Molloch!). People bitch about other people behind their backs, and then are friendly to each other in front of them... it depresses me. Why does holding position and whatever else it is... why is that so important to need this sort of behaviour. Ultimately, it makes groups and organisations weaker... as there is so much wasted effort into something that is completely unproductive... and ultimately, I think (when I see it in music...) it covers up for the lack of ability instead! A sort of play the game... rather than play the music!

People in groups... very strange. I think I will just try to keep doing what I have always done... stay friendly, but away form the crap. It makes me cranky... and I have more fun things to do than to feel cranky!

People are annoying that’s for sure. There’s always bullshit going on with stuff like that and I don’t like to get involved either. I’ve been guilty of participating in some of it but I try to stay out of it for several reasons. One, I’ve learned that it doesn’t become someone to talk shit about someone as it leaves a negative impression on your character as well. There’s also the karma aspect of it!

Too funny that you were the ace of political ideology by not feeding their bullshit! How dare you, you heathen?!

Yes... it really isn't a great idea to bad-mouth... My wife and I are trying to just stay out of everything, and just let our musicianship speak for us. I think people delve into these games when there is less of substance to show.
