Physical Publicity (posters and flyers)

Headed out to do the physical publicity stuff for our next concert. As always, a learning curve all the way, as I deal with all the non-music stuff that goes with launching and running a music ensemble. Honestly, there is so much that goes into it behind the scenes... I knew that there was, but really so much more!

I've got my arse in gear in better time this time... so, much of the digital publicity and media releases were out over a month ahead of time. This meant that I was able to land interviews, more calender listings, and even a magazine profile! Seems okay for my second round of doing this... but it really helps to have the local community helping out and being incredibly receptive to my ensemble vision!

Anyway, today was the physical posters and flyers that needed to go out. But before getting to that, I was able to produce much more in the way of physical advertising this time around thanks to some advice from the local print shop assistant. She told me that the online print options were a rip-off, and that I should print A4 posters normally on thicker paper instead of selecting a "poster" version. The only difference was that I would have a white border around the edges... but the price difference was 75 cents versus the original 7.5 DOLLARS! So, I went for the cheaper version, which meant that I could have more posters... and then have leftover budget to produce lots of A5 flyers on regular paper for 50 cents each!

Armed with lots and lots of posters and flyers, I headed out and started doing the rounds of places that I thought might be a good fit for our ensemble flyers and that might be interested in having either a small stack of flyers or even better, a poster! There were cafes, bakeries, community noticeboards, art galleries and libraries, museums, plus the university school of music and art.... theatres, and other music venues.

Something that I quickly learnt was that most places preferred to have flyers to sit at a table or other small space instead of the posters. The only places that would take posters were generally the ones that had a dedicated space for that sort of thing. Of course, last time, I had 10 posters to hand out... so that wasn't too much of a problem. But this time, I was armed with 50 posters, and about 200 flyers! After this first day of trawling around places I was left with no flyers and about 25 posters. So, I'm going to have to print up a new batch of flyers to hand out, seeing as those seem to be the most cost-effective ones.

I also added a question flow for people purchasing tickets online... asking where they found out about the concert. I'm wondering if all this physical legwork is useful or not? Probably is... if I only pick up a few people from it, it has paid for itself. Where I'm a bit more dubious is the small print advertisement that I bought... I'm pretty sure that that isn't going to be worth it.

In the coming week, I will have to do the rest of the places that I was hoping to hit up... today, I had done most of the further afield ones. Something that really surprised me was that I didn't have any "no"s to asking if I could leave some flyers. Of course, I did choose places that already had flyers, so it wasn't too odd... but I was expecting at least some refusals. That said, some of them might have just been polite and then dumped them immediately in the bin afterwards!

One day, I will have someone employed to do this...
