Robin Hood and Maid Marion

Another two silver coins that I picked up before leaving the Netherlands! This time it is from the a new 2021 collection from the British Mint that features the characters of Robin Hood and his gang of wealth distributers!

The first in the collection is the iconic Robin Hood himself, striking a pose with a drawn longbow high up in the trees of Sherwood Forest. It is a great piece of artwork on the 0.999 one ounce silver coin, and this particular image works incredibly well with the medium of silver. The trees and leaves in particular are a real stand out in terms of design, however, I'm a little less keen on the flatness of the clothing on Robin Hood. However, that flatness does provide a nice texture contrast to the busyness of the leaves... and perhaps that flatness (also of the tree trunk) is necessary to prevent the design being altogether too busy looking!

The second in the series is the equally legendary Maid Marion. Unfortunately, the design for Maid Marion appears to have been a little less successful. The design takes a closer perspective than the one for Robin Hood, and silver has never really been a good medium for faces in my opinion. Quite often, people's faces look a little ghoulish with the smooth shine of the silver, and I'm afraid that this particular coin is no exception to that.

In addition, the business of the dress design and the hair makes for a slightly less than satisfying design on the coin, especially when combined with the necessary detail of the leaves and shrubs that surround our heroine. So, this explains the reasoning behind the relative flatness of part of the Robin Hood design earlier... it does look like that you need a bit more contrast in textures for these designs to be successful on a silver coin.

Finally, both coins feature the Queen on the reverse. Well, this design has been iterated and presented enough times to look pretty damn decent still. Again, a contrast of busyness in the crown is contrasted with flatter spaces elsewhere... resulting in an elegant design that has lasted through the test of time.

So... two very nice additions to the collection... that are on the ship and will hopefully join me in a few months when the container finally arrives in Australia. I'm looking forward to finding the next coin in the series, a depiction of Little John!

These are both very nice!
I honestly don't really mind that the Maid Marion isn't as clear, still love the design. I would have considered buying both of them if I'd found them in a store.

I have yet to find places here where I can just walk in and check out the collection rather than hunting online.

Happy New Year!

I still do it online... I'm a bit embarrassed to do it in person, however... maybe I will start doing it if I find a nice place in Australia!
