Trees down, Stumps Out!

Trees down, Stumps Out!.jpg

Two of our trees got taken down a couple of weeks ago! These were sick ones... one had a huge fungal growth half way up... and the other was well... not idea, but it was more stick than leaf. So, these were the next two trees that were taken down in as soon as we had the funds... after all, we aren't particularly keen to accidentally drop a solid tube shaped block of wood on one of our neighbours! Weirdly enough, whilst I was researching who would be liable... it turns out that even if one of OUR trees fell on someone else's property, it is up to the insurance of the house that it fell upon to pay up! Well... that is a bit counter-intuitive, but even if we weren't liable... it still isn't really a neighbourly thing to leave those trees up.

So, I spent a good part of the day just being memerised at how these professionals took down a tree in close proximity to residential buildings. Seriously, it is like a work of art in he way that they do it... all the limbs first upon ropes... and then the truck down in sections! Wow... and every pieces that comes down lands with a ginormous THUD!

There were quite a few of the smaller limbs... and a good chunk of the larger limbs that were thrown into the large woodchipper to get a pile of much needed mulch for the rest of our garden.

.. and here is the pile of mulch! Which is currently swamping the little pear tree that it got shot out over.... and unfortunately, it has also covered all the rocks that I had dutifully moved here to get them out of the way of the felling. Ah well, it will make using the pitchfork a little bit more difficult later as I whittle down the pile of woodchips.

Some of our new little saplings also got a bit inundated by the sea of woodchips...

... but I did immediately rescue them so that they wouldn't get too suffocated.

Yep... there actually is a large pile of rocks under all of that!

We ended up with large pile of stumps as well! These had to be taken out to the front in a little machine with a claw to hold the pieces. I'm not exactly sure HOW heavy these things are... but you definitely don't want to drop one on your toes!

Anyway, a few days later, we got a knock on the door from a neighbour that we hadn't met yet... and they asked if we wanted these stumps. We said that we didn't, and they asked if they could cut them up for firewood! Sure!!!! No problem... and it saves having the arborist come back to try and get rid of them! So, win-win-win all around!

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to tidy up a lot of the leaves and tree litter that is going to be a monthly chore. It means that I'm shoveling big armfuls of leaves into this bag... and it is really hard when the bag is just freestanding and the weight of the leaves collapses it. I went down to the garden centre to see if they had a metal frame that would do the job of holding it upright and open... but I couldn't find anything, and the store staff we were supremely unhelpful on that day. So, in the end, I found this plastic molded bin... cheap, but it does the job!

Meanwhile, in the attempt to reduce the amount of potential nesting sites for termites... I've started to get to work on removing stumps. Most of the big and medium sized ones were ground down by a machine, but there are still a lot of the smaller ones that will need to be taken out by hand... and some medium sized ones that were missed...

... phew, and it is actually quite hard work! But thankfully, no more termites were found... even in the old stumps. So, that is a nice thing!

Meanwhile, I decided that I would need a good deal more leverage to help get some of the more stubborn stumps out of the ground. And so, I bought this heavy and long prybar to help with that! My kids asked if I was now going to break into people's houses... they couldn't believe that it was a gardening tool!

... ahhh, and a few more of the blooms come out. Not so many more of these ones are blooming at the moment.

... heh... and a late night visitor as well!

I see you are settling into your new home nicely, after the drama of getting there in the first place. Very nice! How are the kids doing with the move?

Yes, we are definitely feeling more settled in... even if there is still lots to do within and outside the house! The kids are really happy with the move... settled at school, and loving being part of a huge extended family!
