Waiting for a Radio Interview

So, I've made the drive up from Sydney with an ample buffer time, just in case there were any hiccups... luckily, I had a day off on the other project that I was doing... so, I could get back home to do some publicity for my own ensemble. And today... that publicity is a live radio interview.

This was a bit of a thing that came together really quite quickly and at not so much notice. There was a friend who made the introduction, and then all of a sudden, there was interest and an interview time scheduled! Sadly, the original interview time wasn't possible for me as I was going to be in a concert in a different city... but after a flurry of emails back and forth, we finally managed to settle on a time that was possible for the radio station, interviewer, and me. It did mean that I would do this crazy day of 3.5 hours driving, then an interview, race to pick up the kids from school, help move a harpsichord and fortepiano in preparation for the arriving grand piano, and then drive another 3.5 hours drive back to the other project... but that is what we do for our own pet projects!

Initially, I was hoping that my wife would join me... but she opted out. Chicken... she was happy to do the print/online interview, but drew the line at a live radio interview. So, here we are... I'm sitting in the waiting room of the radio station... trying to calm my nerves by writing. I did think about writing about house prices and someone who I know who is trying to "time the bottom", and as we all know, timing is a matter of luck rather than actual ability. More often than not, we screw it up completely. Anyway, I was convinced that house prices wouldn't really decrease much more... and I would be writing about my reasoning behind that. I guess that is a story for a different day...

Anyway, in about half hour, I will be briefed on how the interview will go.... I don't mind talking in concerts... but on the few TV/radio interviews that I've had... well, lets just say that I can't bear to watch them! Personally, I find them to be pretty cringe...

... I have no idea what they will be asking about.... but I'm sure that they aren't going to run it like a gotcha quiz show... so, I figure the stuff that I know about myself, my wife, the ensemble, the concert, and the music are going to be more than enough to answer anything that will be asked! Still... as my wife is always quite keen to remind me... I can ramble on a little bit... and quite often, she will tell me that my jokes aren't quite as funny as I think... and that my sense of humour is at best... an acquired taste.. and completely tangential and confusing to many.

So... her advice... dial down the "funny" and just leave the "enthusiasm". I'll try... seriously, this is more nerve-racking than standing up and playing the violin to a packed concert hall.

Being on the radio--I imagine it's like public speaking. I've found the best way to handle that is to just be yourself. Speak to the person you're with, not the audience. You are a bright, interesting person. That will come across if you just pretend it's you and the other person.

Good luck, @bengy.

(I'm looking for a house also, and just hope I don't get burned. Selling one to get one, so maybe that will even things out. Who knows?)

Yes, that sort of ended up being the trick when I did it... in many ways, it is exactly like performing on the violin! However, I'm more with the violin speaking for me rather than my voice...

We sold our Dutch house near the top... and ended up buying in Australia nearish the top as well... it sort of all balances out if you don't try to game and time the market! Mostly...

It is obvious you and your wife are like best of friends, hehe. Nice one man

Talking about interviews, many a time there is that feeling of uncertainty of what might be asked buy I always think the best thing is to be brave enough to approach every question with a good attempt

Weldone man for sharing
