Dear readers, curators and critics, all friends of HIVE, I have the pleasure of writing to you about a vegetable Eden that is found in the city of Medellín for the enjoyment of natives and visitors. This garden, whose facilities have been renamed and reopened for 50 years, is simply charming, strolling through it is giving yourself a first-rate aesthetic taste. I invite you to read the short essay and the photos that accompany it, taken in their vast majority by my relatives Alfonso* and Violeta, on a trip made in 2017, which have been complemented with photos selected from the Internet, in order to provide a more complete look at the Garden. I have visited Medellín a couple of times and both times I have made time to enjoy this Garden. As always, I await your comments and criticism for our intellectual growth.

Humanity has a long experience in enjoying nature in natural or man-made gardens. Possibly it was Theophrastus in the 3rd century BC, a disciple of Aristotle, creator, in my opinion, of taxonomy, who made the first Botanical Garden. In our American continent, the great pre-Hispanic civilizations already enjoyed gardens with native plants, and it is even speculated that they forced their enemies in captivity to give them plants from their regions of origin to acclimatize them to their own weather conditions.

In the center of the city of Medellín there is a plant lung that is the envy of many Colombian cities, it is a botanical garden of more than 13 hectares, located about 1,486 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of 21 0C, which is a great living museum. In the Garden it has a floristic wealth, there an impressive range of more than 1000 species and about 4500 individuals have been classified, especially of the Colombian flora of different habitats. On the other hand, the Garden houses a series of animals such as birds, turtles, reptiles, rodents, insects and fish.

The current Botanical Garden is heir to a place occupied by the family restaurant "La Casa de Baños el Edén", from the 19th century, which later became the "Centennial Forest of Independence", which due to the economy of language was called "The Forest”, a name that lasted until the second half of the 20th century. Starting in 1972, it became a Botanical Garden, when its facilities were expanded to house the national flower of Colombia (La Orquídea) the Orquideorama, an auditorium, the library, museums and food areas.

The Botanical Garden "Joaquín Antonio Uribe" in Medellín became a center for studies and exhibition of the ecosystems of the region, in addition to spreading love and respect for living nature, it serves for the meeting and coexistence of family and friends. You can also enjoy an herbarium, a library, the Tropical Forest, the Palms Garden and the Butterfly House, places conducive to recreation and aesthetic enjoyment of nature.

Inside the Garden, facilities have been built that allow the visitor to spend a day without the usual worries, thus, there is a restaurant and several cafes where you can take a break and then continue with the visit.

Pathways for the enjoyment of the Garden (Caminerías para el disfrute del Jardín) Image
