Medical Minute - How many steps?

avatar

It has been too long since my last Medical Minute post.
I found this information while doing my daily medical journal highlights and felt that it would be good to share on Hive.

Medical minute.png

How many steps do you need every day?

This is a topic that has recommendations and opinions from every health group and health gurus alike.

Where do these numbers come from?

Probably the most common number is 10,000 steps a day.

This number was actually suggested over twenty years ago by a pedometer manufacturing company in their advertising campaign.

10,000 steps a day does not have significant backing to support it.

Now, don't get me wrong, getting 10,000 steps a day in is an excellent goal.

But for a more accurate number, it is not a hard single number for all.
Certain limitations, physical conditions, and age will need to be factored in for a realistic goal.

Hive Text Divider.png

In a recent article published by Dr. Erin E. Dooley, an epidemiologist with the American Heart Association, shows that as we age, the total daily steps are reduced in number.

The most astonishing fact from the article shows that as little as 500 EXTRA steps a day can lead to a reduction of cardiovascular events by 14% within 4 years.

The article also states that the target for the number of steps in adults over 50 is around 4500 steps.

The bottom line is to increase your steps by 500 per day for the average adult over 50.

Hive Text Divider.png

Lucky for us (as in we Hiveans), we have a simple tool that can track your activity and actually pay you for posting about your daily activity.

This is, of course, ACTIFIT. Using the Actifit app can help you track your daily activity

So, the take-home of this article for me is to increase your current activity by 500 steps a day. This makes it a much more doable task.

I like the idea of talking to my patients about activity increases by encouraging them to just add 500 steps a day. This is a much more realistic goal than 10,000 steps per day.

Until next time,
John Novak PA-C

Hi, John.
This is great info for exercise and your health!
Thank you. Yes, Actifit is awesome. 5000 a Day or every 3 Days. What ever someone can do and work up to.
Any walking is good! It's great for the heart muscle. My Mom had a heart attack and I went to Cardiac Rehab in 2001 or 2002 with her. I learned alot about the heart.
I got the Fitbit watch too and love it. I need to read more on it though.
I also use my Actifit app on my phone.
You can sync Fitbit with Actifit.
Have a great weekend.
Barb 😊

This topic is really interesting. It's amazing how making a little effort every day can have a significant impact on your health. However, it also means that the opposite is true, being lazy can definitely lead to serious problems.

Good to know, I'm not quite 50 but getting closer every day! It would be interesting to track how many steps I actually take in a day. I probably sit too much!

Every day makes us one day older, Benjamin.

We all should probably treat ourselves better than we do.

My dad used to tell me that you do not appreciate your health until you lose it.

Awesome and informative. Keeping physical fit should be at our top list everyday. 10,000 steps is a good goal.

When the walk is pleasant, I forget about the steps. Even though I post Actifit reports every day))
Great study, I'll keep that in mind!

Thanks for the interesting information on the recommended number of steps per day. It seems logical that it shouldn't be a one number fits all kind of goal.

I have a hard time realizing what 10,000 steps is, I don't have an app that lets me count, and I'm not sure I want to.
Thanks anyway 👍

It can be hard to count steps without some kind of device to help you monitor them.

I have a tracker on my watch as well as Actifit on my phone, and they are never the same.
I am not sure which is more accurate but I always go with whatever gives me a higher step count, lol

10,000 steps a day is high and can be discouraging.
500 Steps is easier and can make someone look forward to it without being discouraged.
Indeed actifit have been of great help to me.
It makes me want to engage in an activity daily.
And the pay is the best part.

According to WHO we need 10,000 step daily. To me that is for strong people. When it comes to step or exercise. One need to listen to his body.

You are absolutely correct, @ijelady

Everyone truly is quite different in what works for and is good for them, and even that varies quite a bit even over short time periods. Most people could use quite a bit more activity, and not just walking, but also whole-body integral use. Living out here in the jungle as I do, even on less active days, I still get in quite a lot of activity of all sorts. 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I'm hiking. :)

I am 61 and on most days I put in close to 11,000 steps, sometimes just barely over 10K, but 10 K is my daily goal. For me it is no problem to walk these steps, see I have always walked, when I was a kid I preferred walking somewhere than using a bike, I have never driven a car, so I just got used to walking and I am still good at it.
