55 Steps, Review (ENG/SPA)
Hello, internet people! Today I want to talk to you about a movie that I literally just finished watching, it's called #55 Steps#, a drama movie based on real life events that I thought was pretty good.
¡Hola, gente de Internet! Hoy quiero hablarles de una película que literalmente acabo de terminar de ver, se treta de 55 Pasos, un film de drama basada en hechos de la vida real que me pareció bastante bueno.
I always break down films in a technical way, however this time I will simply talk about the story and the performances, because I think they are the most amazing thing about the film.
Siempre desgloso las películas de forma técnica, sin embargo esta vez simplemente hablaré de la historia y las actuaciones porque me parecieron lo más asombroso de la película.
The film is about Eleanor Riese, a mental patient who sues her psychiatric hospital for abuse (she is over-medicated) so Colette Hughes goes to represent her as a lawyer and some later Mort Cohen joins to her, from there it is a constant fight in the supreme court to assert the rights of patients like Eleanor.
La película nos habla de Eleanor Riese, una apaciente mental que demanda a su hospital psiquiátrico por abuso (la sobre medican) así que Colette Hughes va a representarla como abogada y posteriormente se le suma Mort Cohen, desde allí es una pelea constante en la corte suprema por hacer valer los derechos de los pacientes como Eleanor.
I won't give details because I don't want to do spoilers, this is the kind of film you should see without knowing anything. What I can say is that the story is beautiful and something I love is how they represent the reality of the story with a perfect cohesion and structure. An example of this is the development of Colette and Eleanor's friendship and at the beginning they have nothing in common and seem quite distant, like what they are, complete strangers, however, after spending time together to build the case, Colette becomes very fond of Eleanor who is funny, very kind and a good person, until the two form a very special bond.
No daré detalles porque no quiero hacer spoilers, esta es del tipo de películas que debes ver sin saber nada. Lo que sí puedo decir es que la historia es hermosa, y algo que me encanta es como representan la realidad de la historia con una perfecta cohesión y estructura. Un ejemplo de esto es el desarrollo en la amistad de Colette y Eleanor, y es que al principio no tienen nada en común y se ven bastante distantes, como lo que son, completas extrañas, sin embargo, después de pasar tiempo juntas para armar el caso, Colette va encariñándose mucho con Eleanor quien es graciosa, muy amable y buena persona, hasta que ambas forman un vínculo muy especial.
The performances are great, but if I have to applaud someone above all, it is Helena Bonham Carter, her performance is phenomenal, her character is quite complex and she plays it to perfection, it is not overacted or exaggerated, it seems as if the actress suffers from the same illnesses as the character, and this is something that does not surprise me about Helena as she can play any character and merge with it.
Las actuaciones son buenísimas, pero si debo aplaudir a alguien sobre todo mundo es a Helena Bonham Carter, su actuación es fenomenal, su personaje es uno bastante complejo y lo interpreta a la perfección, no está sobreactuado ni es exagerado, tal pareciera que la actriz padeciera las mismas enfermedades del personaje, y es algo que no me sorprende de Helena ya que ella puede interpretar el personaje que sea mimetizándose con este.
The main theme of the film is to portray the arduous process of the lawyers to fight for the rights of the disabled and helpless, and how the system, out of convenience or pride, hindered them throughout the legal process, appeal after appeal until finally justice was done and they were able to create a law with Eleanor's surname to safeguard the right of competent patients to accept or refuse treatments, especially when these have adverse effects that may be harmful in the long term or in amounts greater than recommended.
El tema principal de la película es retratar el arduo proceso de los abogados para luchar por los derechos de los discapacitados e indefensos, y de cómo el sistema, por conveniencia u orgullo, les puso trabas a lo largo del proceso legal, apelación tras apelación hasta que finalmente se hizo justicia y fueron capaces de crear una ley con el apellido de Eleanor para salvaguardar el derecho de los pacientes competentes a aceptar o negarse a los tratamientos, sobre todo cuando estos tienen efectos adversos que pueden ser perjudiciales a largo plazo o en cantidades mayores a lo recomendado.
In Eleanor's case, the substance abuse administered to her by the hospital caused kidney failure, destroyed her bladder, and caused heart failure among other problems that were irreversible. As a conscious and perfectly capable patient being forcibly subjected to such high doses of medication, she was able to sue the hospital and give a voice to thousands of patients in her condition, succeeding at the end of the hard-fought legal battle.
En el caso de Eleanor, el abuso de sustancias que le administraba el hospital le causaron falla renal, le destruyeron la vejiga, y le causaron fallas cardiacas entre otros problemas que eran irreversibles. Siendo una paciente consciente y perfectamente capaz, siendo sometida por la fuerza a esas altas dosis de medicina, pudo demandar al hospital y darle voz a miles de pacientes en su misma condición, teniendo éxito al final de la ardua pelea legal.
I think this is a very, very good film, highly recommended and one that adds to my list of favourites. And well, people, that's all for today's post, I hope you liked it. A good movie, I agree that Helena Bonham Carter gives a great performance. She does everything she does is fabulous, an actress of another level, the rest of the cast is also solid. as you say, it is best to see it without knowing much of the story, it is better enjoyed.
I usually give a bit of context when reviewing but with this one I considered not saying more than I did as the turn of events and the ending is quite emotional and it's best to watch it without knowing it. Helena is my favourite actress and she has never let me down in any film hehe
