¡comencemos!

Hello, internet people! How are you today? This time I will be doing a Review about The Conjuring, a movie that scared me from the beginning and that I went running to see as soon as I knew who its director was. For this work (as with my last review) I will rely mainly on James Wan's directing skills. Without further ado... let's get started!

We will address the characteristic cinematic themes of rigor and analyze James Wan's work on this film.

The story is excellent, but how could it not be, if it's based on real events? For James it was a challenge to make a film whose story was based on reality, as he has told in several interviews, there are many people in the media that put "based on real events" for simple marketing, but he wanted to wear that title on his film with pride and completely sure to do things in the right and honest way. James then wanted to keep talking with Lorraine Warren and the Perron family, who guided him through the making of the film.

¡Vamos a analizarla!.

As for the performances, I must say that there was no actor who didn't do excellent, you feel each of the feelings they want to convey in the different scenes: anguish, fear, uncertainty... but I must particularly applaud the performance of Joey Kin, who played Christine Perron, I dare to say that her scene is the best, you can see the panic on her face and wow it's a difficult scene. Let's analyze it.

At first, Christine thinks that Nancy, her sister, is the one who grabs her feet, but eventually (as she is dragged harder) she ends up waking up completely and realizes that her sister could not have been the cause, since she is still in bed and would not have had time to run to her to pretend to be asleep. Christine then begins to look around and even under her bed (with considerable fear) to try to find a logical answer (that maybe it was one of her other sisters trying to play a joke on her).

That's when the terror begins, as the door to the room starts to close on its own. Here we will pause for a better understanding. Let's divide it into three parts: preamble, climax and denouement. Let's start with the preamble, that's what I just told you, it's the part where the factors: soundtrack, photography and acting, are mixed to make us alert and tense. Let's continue with the analysis of the scene.

Continuing the preamble, Christine notices something behind the door and alerts her sister Nancy, who, like us, fails to see anything. Christine's terror increases as Nancy (in an attempt to reassure her sister) approaches the area Christine points out. Subsequently the door ends up slamming shut and that is when both girls scream and panic (the climax), both parents, hearing them scream enter the room trying to figure out what is going on. Christiene cries and Nancy is paralyzed and that is when the denouement unfolds: Nancy explains what that thing she saw told her, that it wanted her whole family dead.

The scene is extremely difficult because our perspective is the same as Nancy's, we cannot see what Christine can, so the responsibility of scaring us falls on the actress who plays Christine, since with her dialogues and body expression she must transmit the terror that she herself feels. We almost wish Nancy wouldn't go near the door because even though we can't see that "someone", the terror on the girl's face is enough for us.

Now let's talk about the setting and photography. James works horror in the best Asian style, that is to say, he uses Dantesque elements such as suggestion, parallelism or ambiguity. This film was bound to have those elements as he was in charge of its direction, that is why we continue to see a very well worked photography with the respective neutral and muted color palette, the use of red as a representation of malignity (a resource used in the horror genre) some camera shots to the shoulder, closed and elongated shots, accompanied by a good soundtrack, and in this particular film James preferred to make a blur between the protagonist of the scene and the secondary (when he did this with the ghosts, it increased the horror in the viewer).

One of my favorite scenes (besides the one concerning Christine) is the scene of the witch in the closet. There we see again James' ambiguity in working the scenes, previously we had already been presented with a similar scene (the little sister sleepwalked to the older sister's room and banged her head against the closet, the little girls' father and the girl, So, when this scene arrives, both the girl and us as spectators were relaxed, imagining that it would be a matter of putting the little sleepwalker to bed and that would be enough, however, on this occasion a horrifying climax and denouement awaited us.

Once again, James takes great care of the lighting to avoid burnt scenes or lack of light, he makes a perfect balance in which we can see perfectly what happens in the dark scenes without missing details and with the right ambience. An example of this is the scene of the matches with the girls' mother where the only focus of light is the flames of the matches.

James (due to the small budget) opted to employ the use of physical special effects (on set) and less in post production, as well as using makeup for his ghosts, which saved him quite a bit of money. Also, almost all of the scenes were in the house, so he saved quite a bit of money which helped get the film finished with the amount of money set.

The denouement of the film is a happy one and although it may be cliché for many people, I feel it's the ending you would expect for any person, even more so if they are going through problems as horrific as this family. Both the climax (involving the abduction of the girls and the exorcism) and the ending, were very well done and balanced, I loved it.

When knew that James Wan would be responsible for directing the film, I didn't hesitate to run to the theater to see it. I remember I saw the image of Christine Perron (in the movie) crying and I thought "God, what did she see to be so scared?" and I looked up the name of the movie and I found the director: the great James Wan.

As for makeup, the truth is that the costume and makeup department did a great job, the clothing of the characters reminds you of a certain era, as well as the ghosts, and their makeup really provoked terror.
