Escaping the madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (ENG/SPA)
Hello, internet people! How are you today? I recently saw a movie that I loved and it's the one I want to talk about today because both its story (based on real life) and its execution were very well represented. Without further ado, here is my review.
¡Hola, gente de internet! ¿Como están hoy?. Hace poco vi una película con la cual quedé encanta y es de la que quiero hablar hoy, ya que tanto su historia (basada en la vida real) como su ejecución, estuvieron muy bien representadas. Sin más, les dejo mi análisis.
Directed by Karen Moncrieff and starring Christina Ricci, Judith Light, Josh Bowman and Ana Savcic. This film chronicles the experience of Elizabeth Jane Cochran, better known as Nellie Bly (her pseudonym) inside a mental institution. Nellie, a feminist journalist whose bold for her time made her famous, enters the psychiatric hospital incognito to observe first-hand the horrors experienced by the patients, with the intention of portraying it later in a series of chronicles, far from imagining the horrors that she herself would suffer during the 10 days she was admitted.
Dirigida por Karen Moncrieff y protagonizada por Christina Ricci, Judith Light, Josh Bowman y Ana Savcic. Esta película narra la experiencia de Elizabeth Jane Cochran, mejor conocida como Nellie Bly (su seudónimo) dentro de un psiquiatrico. Nellie, periodista feminista cuyos trabajos audaces para época la hicieron célebre, ingresa en el psiquiátrico de incógnito para observar de primera mano los horrores que viven las pacientes, con la intensión de retratarlo luego en una series de crónicas, lejos estaba de imaginar los horrores que a ella misma le tocaría sufrir durante los 10 días que estuvo ingresada.
I must start by saying that the film does justice to the true story on which it's based, portraying faithfully all the mistreatment suffered in the asylum, however, the difference was that it was the newspaper for which she worked who proposed the idea of going incognito to the place because she initially wanted to do a story about immigrants for which she planned to travel to Europe and return pretending to be an immigrant, but that idea was much more expensive.
Debo empezar por decir que la película hace justicia a la historia real en la que se basa, retratando de maneral fiel todos los maltratos sufridos en el manicomio, sin embargo, la diferencia estuvo en que fue el periodico para el que trabajaba quien propuso la idea de ir de incógnito al lugar, ya que ellla en un inicio quería hacer una nota sobre los inmigrantes para lo cual pensaba viajar a europa y regresar fingiendo ser una inmigrante, pero esa idea era muchísimo más costosa.
The other difference was that the one who took Nellie out of her cloister was the newspaper's lawyer.
La otra diferencia fue que quien sacó a Nellie de su claustro, fue el abogado del periódico.
The film has a lugubrious and gothic aesthetic or photography, very successful for the type of story it tells, no matter if it's day or night, if there is a party or not, always the environment and atmosphere is apprehensive.
La película tiene una fotografía o estética lugubre y de corte gótico, muy acertada para el tipo de historia que cuenta, no importa si es de día o de noche, si hay fiesta o no, siempre el ambiente y la atmosfera es aprensiva.
The performances are impressive, Nellie's attitude which oscillates between strength and weakness is the result of Christina Ricci's great work, the truth is that I was impressed and also with Judith Light's work.
Las actuaciones son impresionantes, la actitud de Nellie la cuál oscila entre la fortaleza y la debilidad, es resultado del gran trabajo de Christina Ricci. La verdad es que quedé impresionada y también con el trabajo de Judith Light.
It's difficult to delve into characters that after all really exist. You have the reference, yes, but you can't imprint an ounce of yourself on them and that's complicated when acting, however, that didn't seem to be an impediment for these actors. The story and script were also very good, well worked and structured.
Es dificil profundizar en personajes que después de todo realmente existen. Tienes la referencia, sí, pero no puedes imprimirle ni un ápice de ti y eso es complicado al actuar, sin embargo, eso no pareció un impedimento para estos actores. La historia y guión también fueron muy buenas, bien trabajados y estructurados.
Usually, when we watch films concerning mental asylums, they are oriented to scare, employing the most dangerous patients to do so. However, in this film (and as was Nellie's desire and purpose), the patients are portrayed in an empathetic way, we can easily feel sorry for them and our goal goes along with Nellie's to bring to light the mistreatment the patients suffer. I loved that (although of course the reason for this is because it's a result of the real life).
Usualmente, cuando vemos películas referentes a asilos mentales, están orientadas a asustar, empleando a los pacientes más peligrosos para ello. Sin embargo, en esta película (y como era el deseo y la finalidad de Nellie), se retrata a las pacientes de forma empatica, fácilmente podemos sentir pena por ellas y nuestro objetivo va junto con el de Nellie de sacar a la luz los maltratos que sufren las pacientes. Eso me encantó (aunque claro que el motivo de esto es porque es resultado de la vida real)
Como resumen, puedo aseverar que es una película bastante bien hecha, llena de suspenso y momentos de suma angustia. Recomendada al 100%.
As a summary, I can say that it's a very well made film, full of suspense and moments of extreme anguish. 100% recommended.
One of the things I want to do is to read the book that Nellie wrote: "10 Days in a Madhouse", so I can learn the details of the torture that the journalist suffered.
Una de las cosas que quiero hacer es leer el libro que escribió Nellie: 10 días en un manicomio, y así poder saber los pormenores del caustro que sufrió la periodista.
