Forgotten Resident Evil mechanics

Hey gamers, how's it going? Today I want to talk to you about the mechanics that never came back from my favourite Resident Evil series. There are some that I miss and some that I don't, but either way, the changes have been for the better for the most part, so read on if you want to know which ones were the most significant for me.

¡Hola, gamers!

We start the list with something iconic of Survival Horror at that time: the fixed cameras and although it is understandable that today they are not used, the truth is that it added a level of terror, fearing to reach a corner because the camera did not let us see what was ahead or what we could find at the end of a corridor was distressing. Of course, the shoulder camera (which the series has been using since RE4) also has its appeal, and that is not being able to see what is coming up behind us.

Do any of you remember how overwhelming it was to want to save your game and not have any more tape because you had deliberately saved it before? We old-timers certainly remember! When I was little and played the series for the first time, I quickly ran out of ink and had to leave the console on all night with the game paused so that I could continue the game the next day and see if I could get more ink.

The ribbons disappeared in RE4, although we still had the typewriter, we no longer needed the ribbon and it was a great relief to be able to save as many times as we wanted, but at the same time that lowered the level of complexity and terror a bit, although the change is understandable because Capcom wanted to target the new generation of players as well.

I have a love hate relationship with this, whwn I was a newcomer in the saga, these animations made me very nervous just imagining what could be behind each door, but as I grew older and replayed each game over and over again, the animations began to annoy me, it's something that I remember fondly for the classics and I liked that some remakes respected, but I don't think it's necessary that they return for future video games.

Quick Time Events

I'll hate this shit for the rest of my life and no, it's not because I'm clumsy at it and I make mistakes, it's because I find them annoying. I understand the function they serve (to keep the players' attention even in the cinematics and give dynamism to the confrontations) and I think that in general terms in RE4 it was well used (except for the cinematic where Leon sees Krauser for the first time in the game) but from RE5 everything went to shit regarding this mechanic, they abused its use, they sullied our controls and transformed a horror saga into an action saga, fortunately they returned to its essence with RE7 but with a refreshing of dynamics and controls.

Inventario Reducido / Reduced Inventory

Who wasn't stressed by those limited spaces in the classic games? haha, the reduced inventory was a good resource to activate the strategist zone of our brain, we had to be sure what we had to take and what not, because if we were too loaded, sometimes we couldn't take more than three objects from a room and we had to go back to leave things, which was a waste of time, not to mention that in RE1 if they played with Chris, you had two spaces less in the inventory 🙃.

I left off last something that we thought was overrated until we lost it in RE0, clearly I'm talking about the chest, those interdimentional drawers that allowed us to store items to empty our inventory and be able to take them when needed in any save area. We saw them until RE3 since in RE4 there aren't any of them, however, at least in RE4 they fixed it by putting us a pretty big briefcase that was divided by grids, technically they combined the inventory and the chest and gave way to the briefcase. This object besides giving us more space than the inventories of past games, could be expandable and being divided by grid, allowed us to organize the objects as we needed to make more space and be able to put more objects, without a doubt for me that is the most brilliant idea that the development team has had.

Ah the classic limitations in Resident Evil.. the Ink Ribbon was a big thing that made you be more conservative and add in limited inventory haha.
I always loved the door animations and the puzzles, especially the key doors requiring going back and forth and working it out.

yes, I think they are mechanics that made the saga unique and original, very innovative at the time

The mechanic I miss the most about Resident Evil is the manual save and no checkpoints, that increased the sense of tension and fear when playing. I also miss that there used to be more emphasis on inventory management and the stories were focused on conspiracies and not on characters with "supernatural" abilities.
