Let's talk about Decendants (ENG/SPA)
Hello, internet people, everything ok? Today I want to talk about another Disney film that although it is less well made than Teen Beach Movie, it is still quite entertaining and has an unconventional story.
Hola, gente de internet ¿todo bien? Hoy quiero hablar de otra película de Disney que si bien está menos trabajada que Teen Beach Movie, sigue siendo bastante entretenida y además tiene una historia fuera de lo convencional.
The story focuses on the Disney universe, all the heroes (princes and princesses) won the battle against the villains and all decided to settle in their own kingdom where they chose Adam (the beast) as the supreme monarch, this settlement was called Auradom, on the contrary, all the villains were banished to an island called "The Isle of the Lost", which is closed by a magical barrier made by Cinderella's fairy godmother, there they are left to their fate. When Benjamin, the son of Belle and Adam, is about to take the throne, he makes his first decree, a programme where he will take 4 children of 4 villains to Auradom to reintegrate them into society, as they are innocent of the crimes of their parents, starting with the conflict that this would represent and being the main engine of the story.
La historia se centra en el universo Disney, todos los héroes (príncipes y princesas) ganaron la batalla contra los villanos y todos decidieron asentarse en su propio reino dónde eligieron a Adam (la bestia) como el sumo monarca, a este asentamiento lo llamaron Auradom, por el contrario, a todos los villanos los desterraron en una isla llamada "La Isla de los Perdidos", la cual está cerrada por una barrera mágica hecha por el hada madrina de Cenicienta, allí están abandonados a su suerte. Cuando Benjamin, el hijo de Bella y Adam, está próximo a tomar el trono, hace su primer decreto, se trata de un programa donde llevará a Auradom a 4 hijos de 4 villanos para reinsertarlos en la sociedad, ya que ellos son inocentes de los crímenes de sus padres, empezando con el conflicto que esto representaría y siendo el motor principal de la historia.
I'm not going to get bogged down in technicalities because the film doesn't have much to boast about. The cinematography is beautiful, the colour palette is very different in The Isle of the Lost and Auradom. On the island everything is rusty, dark and somehow depressing, in Auradom everything is colourful, with warm light and a pleasant filter. You can clearly see the marked difference in social classes and characters represented in this way and although the dialogues show it, the graphic form comes first.
No voy a extenderme hablando de tantos tecnicismos porque la película no tiene gran cosa para presumir. La fotografía sí que es preciosa, la paleta de colores dista mucho en La Isla de los Perdidos y en Auradom. En la isla todo está oxidado, es oscuro y de alguna forma, deprimente, en Auradom todo es colorido, con luz cálida y un filtro agradable. Claramente se ve la diferencia marcada de clases sociales y de caracteres representados de esta forma, y aunque en los diálogos lo muestran, la forma gráfica entra primero.
I quite like the costumes, they also make the distinction of social status and characters in this, the clothes of the main characters when they are on the island are made of leather to represent the "rebellious" in Auradom they wear another type of fabric but it still represents the colour of each character, and the children of these villains (that I forgot to mention before) are the son of Jaffar (Jay) the son of Cruella (Carlos) the daughter of Maleficent (Mal) and the daughter of The Evil Queen (Evie), the palette of colours that the children wear in their clothes, is the same as the parents.
El vestuario me gusta bastante, también hacen la distinción de condición social y de caracteres en esto, la ropa de los protagonistas cuando están en la isla es de cuero para representar lo "rebelde" en Auradom usan otro tipo de tela pero sigue representando el color de cada personaje, y es que los hijos de estos villanos (que olvidé mencionar antes) son el hijo de Jaffar (Jay) el hijo de Cruella (Carlos) la hija de Maléfica (Mal) y la hija de La Reina Malvada (Evie), la paleta de colores que usan los hijos en su ropa, es la misma que la de los padres.
If there is something that shocked me a lot, it is that some of the characters did not have the appearance corresponding to the original character: the evil queen, cruella, Audry (Aurora's daughter) and her grandmother (Aurora's mother) among others, all of this is part of the script holes the size of a sinkhole that I will talk about later.
Si hay algo que me chocó bastante, es que alguno de los personajes no tuvieran la apariencia correspondiente al personaje original: la reina malvada, cruella, Audry (hija de Aurora) y su abuela (la madre de Aurora) entre otros, todo esto forma parte de los agujeros de guion del tamaño de un socavón que hablaré más adelante
Talking about the children of the Disney characters we grew up with is pretty cool, pretty original and it's a way for the producers to pass on the legacy of the parent to the children to the viewers, it's pretty creative the way they managed to bring all these characters together in one universe, but.... Did they get it right? Definitely not.
Hablar de los hijos de los personajes de Disney con los que crecimos es muy genial, bastante original y es una forma de los productores de pasar el legado de los padre a los hijos ante los espectadores, es bastante creativa la forma en la que se las arreglaron para juntar a todos estos personajes en un mismo universo, pero... ¿lo hicieron bien? definitivamente no.
The story, although it has a pretty good and creative intention, in execution it feels like a sieve due to all the plot holes it has, I'll name them. For starters, the original stories are set in different times but slightly in the same range (we're talking about the ones they used for the movie) however the story is set in the present day, and while I can understand that this is to appeal to young people... I disagree, first of all, whether you like it or not, by doing this it makes a huge plot hole, I mean are these people young forever? Suddenly, after centuries they decided to have children... we can think that maybe they drank the elixir of eternal youth, but that's not the case, since that's not explained on screen, so it wouldn't be cannon, and besides on the island of the lost there is an antimagic barrier, then to make matters worse, the parents of the villains and heroes look mature as the normal age to have children of the ages of teenagers It doesn't make sense!
La historia, aunque tiene una intención bastante buena y creativa, en ejecución parece un colador de todos los agujeros de guion que tiene, pasaré a nombrarlos. Para empezar, las historias originales se desarrollan en épocas distintas pero ligeramente en el mismo rango (hablamos de las que usaron para la película) sin embargo la historia se desarrolla en la actualidad, y aunque puedo entender que es para que resulte atractivo para los jóvenes... no estoy de acuerdo, en primer lugar, quiera que no, al hacer esto se hace un agujero de guion enorme, es decir ¿esta gente es joven eternamente? De repente, después de siglos decidieron tener hijos... podemos pensar que tal vez bebieron elixir de la eterna juventud, pero no es así, ya que eso no se explica en pantalla, por lo tanto no seria cannon, y además en la isla de los perdidos hay una barrera antimagia, entonces para más inri, los padres de los villanos y héroes se ven maduros como la edad normal para tener hijos de las edades de los adolescentes ¡No tiene sentido!
On the other hand, do they really want us to believe that each prince left his own kingdom to live as a subject in Auradom? does it make sense to leave your own kingdom where you can set your own rules to go and live by someone else's rules? What happened to those kingdoms? I mean, in the movie we are told that each kingdom became one (we can see it on the map) but why would each prince give up his land and crown? it doesn't make sense either!
Por otro lado, ¿en serio quieren hacernos creer que cada príncipe dejó su propio reinado para vivir de súbdito en Auradom? ¿tiene sentido dejar tu propio reino donde puedes poner tus propias reglas para ir a vivir según las reglas de otro? ¿Qué pasó con esos reinos? Es decir, en la película se nos explica que cada reino se hizo uno (lo podemos ver en el mapa) pero ¿porqué cada príncipe cedería sus terrenos y su corona? ¡tampoco tiene sentido!
Another thing, why can Benjamin make proclamations if he has not yet taken the throne? I mean, he decides to make a programme to reintegrate the children of the villains into society, with what power can he do it, if he doesn't have it yet? and his father who is still the king, if he really wants to oppose it, he opposes it, he is the king! Nor would I understand giving the crown to a brat who has just turned 18, if he (Adam) is still well enough to rule... in short, things that have no context or realism, but they put it in the film because it is better to give the protagonism to teenagers and that's it 🤦.
Otra cosa, ¿por qué Benjamín puede hacer proclamas cuando aún no ha tomado el trono? Es decir, este decide hacer un programa para reinsertar en sociedad a los hijos de los villanos ¿con que poder si aún no lo tiene? y su padre que aún es el rey, si realmente se quiere oponer se opone ¡él es el rey! Tampoco entendería darle la corona a un mocoso que apenas acaba de cumplir los 18, si él (Adam) todavía está bien para mandar... en fin, cosas que no tienen contexto ni realismo, pero lo ponen en la película porque es mejor darle el protagonismo a los adolescentes y ya 🤦♀
The film explains that on the island, they have no access to sweets or fruit, and I wonder.... How did these people not die of malnutrition? Sugar and vitamins are necessary for the body, how did these children not faint? You can call me an exaggerator but things are either done right or they are not. And those are some of the millions of script holes, I'll only say those because otherwise I'll never finish.
En la película se nos explica que en la isla, no tienen acceso a dulces ni frutas, entonces me pregunto... ¿Cómo esta gente no se murió de desnutrición? El azúcar y las vitaminas son necesarias para el cuerpo ¿Cómo no se desmayaron esos niños? Pueden llamarme exagerada pero las cosas se hacen bien o no se hacen. Y esos son algunos de los millones de agujeros de guion, solo diré esos porque si no no terminaría nunca.
I really liked the soundtrack, the songs are catchy and great. "Rotten to the Core" is the first song of the film and the one that explains the personalities of each of the main characters, and I think it does a great job as we can notice the wickedness of Mal, the sensuality and glamour of Evie, the mischievousness of Jay and the sarcastic personality of Carlos.
La banda sonora sí que me gustó bastante, las canciones son pegadizas y geniales. "Rotten to the Core" es la primera de la película y la que nos explica las personalidades de cada uno de los protagonistas, creo que hace un gran trabajo ya que podemos notar la maldad de Mal, la sensualidad y glamour de Evie, la picardía de Jay y la personalidad sarcástica de Carlos.
There is also a new version of one of my favourite songs Our Be Guest I liked it a lot because it sounds cool and still doesn't lose the essence of what the song was originally about. It's also great in the scene where they are welcoming the guests of the event, and it's sung by Benjamin (Adam and Bella's son) and well, this song belongs to that movie so to speak.
También hay una versión nueva de una de mis canciones preferidas "Nuestro Huésped sea Usted" me gustó bastante porque suena cool y aún así no pierde la esencia de lo que en un principio fue la canción. Además está genial en la escena ya que están dándole la bienvenida a los invitados del evento, y es Benjamin quien la canta (el hijo de Adam y Bella) y pues, esta canción pertenece a esta película por decirlo así.
I like the main characters (the children of the villains) quite a lot but as expected lately in current productions, the girls stand out more (I'm not saying it's bad but it's getting cliché) Mal and Evie are without a doubt the most striking characters although all 4 have a good character development, I must admit that.
Los personajes principales (los hijos de los villanos) me gustan bastante, pero como era de esperarse últimamente en las producciones actuales, destacan más las chicas (no digo que esté mal pero ya se está haciendo cliché) Mal e Evie son sin discusión los personajes más llamativos, aunque los 4 tienen un buen desarrollo de personaje, eso debo admitirlo.
Jay is Jaffar's son and on the island with his father, he lived by stealing what little they had from the other inhabitants, one of their obsessions was to get lamps in the hope of finding another genie. When Jay arrives in Auradom he is looked down upon for his rude behaviour, selfishness and lack of manners, but as time goes by and he joins the school's star sport team, he learns to work as a team and to live by his own rules, he learns to live for himself and not for his father
Jay es el hijo de Jaffar, y en la isla junto a su padre, vivía de robarle lo poco que tenían a los demás habitantes, una de las obsesiones de ambos era conseguir lamparas con la esperanza de hallar otro genio. Cuando Jay llega a Auradom es visto muy mal por su comportamiento brusco, su egoísmo y su falta de modales, sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo y gracias a que entra al equipo del deporte estrella de la escuela, aprende a trabajar en equipo y a vivir en función a sus propias reglas, aprende a vivir para él mismo y no para su padre.
Carlos is a small (in height) and frightened boy, which is not understandable because of his mother, who is neither frightening nor inoffensive. Carlos has a phobia of dogs (I don't understand it either, as his mother used to chase them to kill them and make clothes out of them), so anyone would think that being raised by her, it would be normal for her to raise him with a hatred of dogs, but, well, Disney nonsense. Carlos learns in Auradom to be less shy, to get attached to the dogs, and like Jay, he learns to live according to his dreams and what he wants for himself, and not what his mother set out for him.
Carlos es un muchacho pequeño (de estatura) y asustadizo, cosa que no se entiende debido a la madre que tiene que precisamente no es ni asustadiza ni inofensiva. Carlos tiene fobia a los perros (tampoco lo entiendo ya que la madre los perseguía para matarlos y hacer ropa con ellos) así que cualquiera diría que siendo criado por ella, lo normal sería que lo criara con odio por los perros pero, en fin, tonterías de Disney. Carlos aprende en Auradom a ser menos tímido, a encariñarse con los perros, y como Jay, aprende a vivir en función de sus sueños y lo que quiere para si, y no lo que su madre dispuso para él.
Mal pretends to be mean and domineering but the truth is that she is a bully who takes out her frustration on others due to her fear of her mother and the pressure her mother puts on her shoulders, she even does quite reprehensible things just to fulfil her mother's whims at all costs, however, being in Auradom and meeting Benjamin, Mal realises that she is different from her mother and that in the safety of Auradom she does not have to become a villain, she does not have to do what she does not want to do to please a mother who is notoriously mean.
Mal finge ser mala y dominante pero la verdad es que es una brabucona que descarga su frustración en otros, dado al miedo que le tiene a su madre y la presión que esta coloca sobre sus hombros, incluso hace cosas bastante reprobables solo por cumplir los caprichos de su madre a toda costa, sin embargo, al estar en Auradom y conocer a Benjamin, Mal se da cuenta de que es diferente a su madre y que en la seguridad de Auradom no tiene por qué convertirse en villana, no tiene que hacer lo que no quiere para agradar a una madre que notablemente es malvada.
Evie (my favourite) is the daughter of Grimhilde (the evil queen) and at first she seems rather stupid, she is manipulated by her mother to get a handsome and rich prince to support them both, however when she arrives in Auradom, Evie realises that she is not stupid, in fact she is quite intelligent and has an adorable and naive personality that makes her the focus of possible threats. Evie decides to be herself and put her talents to work in order to be independent and be happy with her new life without the burden of her mother's evil plans.
Evie (mi favorita) es la hija de Grimhilde (la reina malvada) y en un inicio parece bastante tonta, es manipulada por su madre para que consiga a un príncipe guapo y rico que las mantenga a ambas, sin embargo al llegar a Auradom, Evie se da cuenta de que no es tonta, de hecho es bastante inteligente y además tiene una personalidad adorable e ingenua que más bien la hace foco de posibles amenazas. Evie decide ser ella misma y poner a trabajar sus talentos en función de ser independiente y poder ser feliz con su nueva vida sin llevar encima el peso de los planes malvados de su madre.
The film explores discrimination and how a morally "good" society can become villainous in trying to defend what they believe is right, and how unjustified finger-pointing can lead to doom. Social pressure is another theme, and how a parent's design can make a child totally unhappy and tormented. In real life there are parents who force their children to live their dreams through them, making them unhappy in the process. We can also see how your genetics and upbringing do not necessarily determine who you will be in the future, and that everyone chooses his or her own path. Good Job, Disney!
La película explora la discriminación y el como una sociedad moralmente "buena" puede convertirse en villano intentando defender lo que creen correcto, y además también se muestra como el hecho de señalar con el dedo injustificadamente a alguien puede desencadenar la perdición. La presión social es otro tema que se toca, y como el designio de un padre puede hacer totalmente infeliz a un hijo y hacerlo vivir un tormento. En la vida real hay padres que obligan a sus hijos a vivir sus sueños a través de ellos, haciéndolos infelices en el proceso. También podemos ver como necesariamente tu genética y crianza no determina quien serás en el futuro, y que cada quien elige su propio camino ¡buena esa Disney!

Debo confesar que esta película siempre ha sido un placer culposo para mí, y cuando la estrenaron, Rotten To The Core era MI HIMNO. Siempre he sido fan de los villanos y que hicieran una película dedicada a los hijos fue una genialidad. Luego de las secuelas, me di cuenta que en realidad es una película para niños y por eso se siente muy tonta en ocasiones, eso quizá justifique todos los errores de la película, cómo mencionas, pero no le quita lo cómica y buena que es.😅
Adoré leer tu reseña y la descripción de cada personaje (Evie también es mi favorita, toda una diva inteligente). Ahora quedé con ganas de verla de nuevo, al menos la primera, y en especial disfrutar de esas pegajosas canciones. Gravias por compartir.🤗✨

What I wonder is if there aren't that many male villains and they were banished to that island, then all those children are theirs...it's a question that always runs through my mind when I think of this movie. Thanks for sharing, cheers :D
