The Borrowers [Review] ESP/ENG
I read this book many years ago, when I was a child and my mother would take me to the public library while we waited my turn to enter the classical ballet school where I studied at that time, but recently I had the wonderful opportunity to rediscover this gem of childhood, I'm referring to The Borrowers, a work that has been adapted for film and theater on several occasions, even Studio Ghibli was inspired by this book to create The World of Arrietty.
Este libro lo leí hace muchos años, cuando era niña y mi mamá me llevaba a la biblioteca pública mientras esperábamos mi turno para entrar a la escuela de ballet clásico en la que yo estudiaba en esa época, pero recientemente tuve la oportunidad maravillosa de reencontrarme con esta joya de la infancia, me refiero a los Borrowers, una obra que se ha llevado al cine y al teatro en varias ocasiones, incluso Los Estudios Ghibli se inspiraron en este libro para crear El Mundo de Arrietty.
The Clock are a family of very tiny people who live hidden under the kitchen floor of a house. Pod (the father) constantly leaves the house to gather supplies and everything his family needs for a safe and comfortable life, often taking it from the people who live there. This is where the book's title, "Borrowers," comes from. Homily (the mother) is always concerned with comfort, while her daughter Arrietty is lively and adventurous. She enjoys it when her father asks her to accompany him on his supply runs, but she dreams of venturing further afield, longing to experience the outside world in all its splendor. One day, however, the human boy who lives in the house catches sight of her. Although she initially panics because this means she and her family will have to emigrate, she and the boy become friends. Nevertheless, as nothing is perfect, the housekeeper discovers the Borrowers' lair and tries to exterminate them, considering them pests, which forces them to... look for a safer place.
Los Clock son una familia de personas muy diminutas que viven escondidos bajo el piso de la cocina de una casa. Pod (el padre) constantemente se encarga de salir del escondite para ir a buscar víveres y todo lo que necesita su familia para llevar una vida segura y cómoda, a menudo lo toma de las personas que habitan la casa, de ahí proviene el título del libro "Borrowers" que significa en español algo así como "el que toma prestado", Homily (la madre) siempre está preocupada por las comodidades, mientras que su hija Arrietty es vivaz y aventurera, disfruta cuando su padre le pide que lo acompañe a buscar víveres, pero ella sueña con poder ir un poco más allá en su exploración, anhela conocer el mundo exterior en todo su esplendor, sin embargo, un día el niño humano que vive en la casa logra verla, y aunque al inicio ella entra en pánico porque esto significaba que ella y su familia tendrían que emigrar hacia otro lugar, luego ella y el niño se hacen amigos, no obstante, como nada puede ser perfeceto, el ama de llaves encuentra la guarida de los Borrowres e intenta exterminarlos al considerarlos plagas, lo cuál los obliga a buscar un lugar más seguro.
When I was a child, I remember finding this book fascinating, not only because of its beautiful illustrations, but also because of the story itself. It was so well-narrated that it helped foster my imagination. Now that I've read it as an adult, I understand why. The author, Mary Norton, describes each scene and landscape with great precision, and what is most striking is the way the Borrowers transform objects like jar lids, pins, clocks, and such into more functional utensils for everyday use in their environment, like chairs, tables, and beds, for example.
Cuando yo era niña, recuerdo que este libro me pareció fascinante, no solo por las ilustraciones tan bonitas que tenía, sino porque la historia como tal, y es que está tan bien narrada que ayudaba a fomentar mi imaginación, y ahora que lo leí de adulta me di cuenta porqué, y es que la autora, Mary Norton describe con gran precisión cada escena y cada paisaje, y lo que llama la atención poderosamente es la manera en que los Borrowers convierten objetos como tapas de frascos, alfileres, relojes y cosas así en utensilios más funcionales para su uso cotidiano en su entorno como sillas, mesas y camas, por ejemplo.
I also noticed something now that I didn't see back then, when I was more focused on the adventures than on anything deeper: the plot explores something intrinsic to human nature, that need for containment and protection, the search for a safe place to develop as a family, the struggle for survival and adaptation. It also speaks to perspectives, how we all see things differently depending on what's in our hearts. For example, the housekeeper saw the Borrowers as strange and dangerous creatures, pests that had to be captured immediately, confirming the Clock's (the Borrowers') worst fears: that humans are dangerous and that it's best to hide from them. But the boy who lives in the house is human and thinks differently; he helps them, protects them, and defends them. Some believe this story might have an even deeper political subtext, an allegory for class differences, where the Borrowers represent poor people who depend on the wealthy (for example, in terms of employment) but are in a constantly vulnerable position.
También ahora pude notar algo que yo no notaba entonces, cuando me enfocaba más en las aventuras que en algo más profundo, y es que la trama explora algo intrínseco del ser humano, esa necesidad de contención y protección, la búsqueda de un lugar seguro en el cuál poder desarrollarse como familia, la lucha por la supervivencia y la adaptación. Además también nos habla de las perspectivas, como todos miramos las cosas de forma diferente según lo que tengamos en nuestro corazón, por ejemplo: para el ama de llaves los Borrowers eran criaturas extrañas y peligrosas, plagas que se debían atrapar de inmediato, confirmando los peores temores de los Clock (los Borrowers) que los humanos son peligrosos y que es mejor ocultarse de ellos, pero el niño que vive en la casa es humano y piensa diferente, los ayuda, los protege y los defiende. Hay quienes piensan que esta historia podría tener un trasfondo político aún más profundo como una alegoría a las diferencias de clases, donde los Borrowers representan a las personas pobres que tienen dependencia de los más adinerados (laboralmente por ejemplo) pero están en una situación de vulnerabilidad constante.
Arrietty is daring, noble, and fearless, yet cautious when necessary. She resists change at first but eventually accepts it as inevitable. However, her enthusiasm grows with the anticipation of new horizons. In short, it's a beautiful book with a dynamic and fun plot, not only for children but also for adults who want to relive that magic. 😍
Arriety es arriesgada, noble e intrépida pero cautelosa cuando tiene que serlo, se resiste al cambio al inicio pero luego se resigna al ver que es inevitable, sin embargo crece en ella el entusiasmo con la expectativa de nuevos horizontes. Es resumen es un libro hermoso, con una trama dinámica y divertida, no solo para los niños, sino también para los adultos que quieren revivir esa magia 😍
