MY FIRST EARNINGS WAS LIKE A GIFT

Back in the days everyone was somehow involved in the family business, as kids even after school we would help our mother to sell her goods in the market. We had no choice because we were made to understand that the money we spend was gotten from selling what we sell at that time (fruits). It was a mandatory we assist our mother and we got used to it without any complains.

At young as I was at that time, I already know the value of money, I know what it means to work and earn and also to spend wisely or else one would be broke. After selling we would forfeit all the money to our mother and she wouldn't even thank us I guess she felt it is our obligations to help her. Well as long as we were able to eat after sales we were contented.

After few years, I had become a teenager and was growing up so fast, and was still diligently helping my mum with work accepting it as a family business. On this special day a good man came to buy some fruit from us, after buying he was impressed with the way I attended to him and he gave me some money as a gift, i refused as first because my mum had warned us not to accept gifts from strangers and neighbors but he insisted and told my mum that he really wanted to give it to me, my mum gave me this African mothers signal which implies that I can collect it and I did.

When we finally got home that day, my mum called me aside and said this words to me"you have really tried for me and you deserve some gift, this isn't just like a gift it is what I would be giving to you everyday." MY joy knew no bound, i was really happy and glad. She also concluded I should save the money and also use it for any emergency I have, and to also use it to buy things that I might need.

I was able to remember that day because of that good man, I felt it was because of the man my mum gave me the money but she didn't stop that day, she continue paying me and also at some point she increased it, and only stopped when I started working elsewhere.

My first pay was ₦200( not up to a dollar now), i remembered I had kept the money inside my dictionary and would be going back and forth just to make sure it still there. That money was very important to me because with it I stopped asking for some basic things that I needed at that time. I saved a little bit and I was able to buy my first Motorola phone.
