The Gilded Age. First season. [ENG-ESP]

I recently told you that I started in the world of TV series, I started with Game of Thrones because I wanted to watch The Dragon House and since there are so many series nowadays but for now I can only watch the HBO ones, I decided to investigate which one I would like next and I found this beautiful jewel called The Gilded Age.

Hace poco les conté que me inicié en el mundo de las series de televisión, empecé con Juego de Tronos porque quería ver La Casa del Dragón y como hoy en día hay tantas series pero por ahora sólo puedo ver las de HBO, decidí investigar cuál sería la siguiente que me gustaría y encontré esta preciosa joya llamada La Edad Dorada.

I decided on this production because I love this period of history and I really enjoyed the period novels that were made in Mexico or Venezuela a long time ago. In fact, I recently saw a rerun of a novela on a telenovela channel. Well, the thing is that the idea of watching this kind of stories again made me very excited, it was like watching one of my favorite novels but in another country since I had not seen any that was set in the United States.

Me decidí por esta producción porque me encanta este periodo de la historia y me gustaban mucho las novelas de época que se hacían en México o Venezuela hace mucho tiempo. De hecho, hace poco vi la repetición de una novela en un canal de telenovelas. Bueno, el caso es que la idea de volver a ver este tipo de historias me emocionó mucho, era como ver una de mis novelas favoritas pero en otro país ya que no había visto ninguna que estuviera ambientada en Estados Unidos.

This story as I said is set in New York in 1880, when many changes were happening in American society. The first season has 9 chapters that took me 3 days to watch, I know I could have done it in less time but I had other things to do. Now that is not important because I tell you that I really liked the rhythm of the story, the introductory music (I wonder if all HBO series are like that, because I also love GOT), the atmosphere, the costumes and the characters that although not all are strong have their charm.

Esta historia como he dicho está ambientada en el New York de 1880, cuando se estaban produciendo muchos cambios en la sociedad americana. La primera temporada tiene 9 capítulos que me llevó 3 días ver, sé que podría haberlo hecho en menos tiempo pero tenía otras cosas que hacer. Ahora eso no es importante porque les cuento que me gustó mucho el ritmo de la historia, la música de introducción (me pregunto si todas las series de HBO son así, porque también me encanta GOT), la ambientación, el vestuario y los personajes que aunque no todos son fuertes tienen su encanto.

Plot / Trama

Marian is a young girl from Pennsylvania who, upon the death of her father, travels to New York to live with her aunts Agnes and Ada, her father’s sisters. On her trip she meets Peggy, a colored girl returning to New York.

Since her arrival at her aunts’ house she will realice that appearances and customs are very important in society, as well as knowing with whom you have dealings since it is not right to be seen with people who are considered of little morals or any new rich people who are those who have forged their wealth by themselves and not by inheritance from their ancestors.

Marian es una joven de Pensilvania que, tras la muerte de su padre, viaja a New York para vivir con sus tías Agnes y Ada, las hermanas de su padre. En su viaje conoce a Peggy, una chica de color que regresa a Nueva York.

Desde su llegada a la casa de sus tías se dará cuenta de que las apariencias y las costumbres son muy importantes en la sociedad, así como saber con quién te relacionas ya que no está bien que te vean con personas consideradas de poca moral o con nuevos ricos que son los que han forjado su riqueza por sí mismos y no por herencia de sus antepasados.

While in New York, Marian meets Mr. Raikes, a young lawyer from Pennsylvania who handled the legal proceedings when her father died. From the first moment he shows interest in Marian and she is attracted to him as he is good looking and seemingly honest in his intentions. This young man, although he is a professional, does not come from a wealthy family, something that will make Aunt Agnes doubt, while Marian does not mind since she does not have an inheritance either.

Durante su estancia en Nueva York, Marian se encuentra al Sr. Raikes, un joven abogado de Pensilvania que se encargó de los trámites legales cuando murió su padre. Desde el primer momento muestra interés por Marian y ella se siente atraída por él, ya que es guapo y aparentemente honesto en sus intenciones. Este joven, aunque es un profesional, no proviene de una familia adinerada, algo que hará dudar a la tía Agnes, mientras que a Marian no le importa ya que tampoco tiene una herencia.

Opinion / Opinión

Novel? Yes, I felt like I was watching one of the novels I like, it is not a production where you can see a lot of action, but rather all the moves or events are carried out through intrigues and strategies according to the convenience of who has more power.

It is a struggle of the conservative society that does not accept the changes of the new era or the people that come with it, all against the new rich or those who have aspirations to forge their future within society. It can be said that it is a power struggle, where the important people have the need to demonstrate that they have the power either because they have more money or because of the influence they can exert on other people in their circle of friends.

This is evident when a person, no matter how much economic power he has, is not admitted into the elite circle of the great society of New York, which until that moment in history were the ones who dominated and made the decisions. What does he have to do to achieve his goal? There is only one answer and that is to use his money and well thought out strategies. That’s what our characters the Russells did, a newcomer family with all the money in the world but still not well regarded.

The women in this series have a very important role even if they are only the wife of a banker, councilman or millionaire tycoon, they take the reins of this story, because it is all about society and living on appearances. Sometimes we see husbands asking their wives to intercede in some problem or business he has in mind but always to obtain a benefit either economic or social.

¿Novela? Sí, sentí que estaba viendo una de las novelas que me gustan, no es una producción en la que se vea mucha acción, sino que todas las jugadas o eventos se llevan a cabo a través de intrigas y estrategias de acuerdo a la conveniencia de quien tiene más poder.

Es una lucha de la sociedad conservadora que no acepta los cambios de la nueva era ni las personas que vienen con ella, todo ello contra los nuevos ricos o los que tienen aspiraciones de forjar su futuro dentro de la sociedad. Se puede decir que es una lucha de poder, donde las personas importantes tienen la necesidad de demostrar que tienen el poder ya sea porque tienen más dinero o por la influencia que pueden ejercer sobre otras personas de su círculo de amistades.

Esto es evidente cuando una persona, por mucho poder económico que tenga, no es admitida en el círculo de la élite de la gran sociedad de New York, que hasta ese momento de la historia eran los que dominaban y tomaban las decisiones. ¿Qué tiene que hacer para lograr su objetivo? Sólo hay una respuesta y es utilizar su dinero y estrategias bien pensadas. Eso es lo que hicieron nuestros personajes, los Russell, una familia recién llegada con todo el dinero del mundo, pero que aún no está bien considerada.

Las mujeres en esta serie tienen un papel muy importante aunque solo sean la esposa de un banquero, concejal o magnate millonario, ellas toman las riendas de esta historia, porque todo es cuestión de sociedad y de vivir de las apariencias. A veces vemos a los maridos pidiendo a sus mujeres que intercedan en algún problema o negocio que tenga en mente pero siempre para obtener un beneficio ya sea económico o social.

Another of the beauties of the series are the attire and elegance of its characters. Let’s remember that we are talking about the innate cream of the New York society at the end of the 19th century. Everything is very well represented, I was delighted to see the women with their pompous dresses and those of the most adinerasas were much more spectacular as well as their houses, very beautiful, 100 points to the setting. We also see them engaged in activities that I understand were the hobbies of a woman at that time, such as embroidery, painting, playing piano and attending charity events that made them feel that they were contributing to those in need.

The men, on the other hand, were very elegant, always dressed in black and wearing hats. There are also those who hide their homosexuality behind the closet and look for a wife to cover up appearances. This is something new to me in terms of these stories but it seems appropriate and I imagine we will continue to see more characters in the same situation.

Otra de las bellezas de la serie es el vestuario y la elegancia de sus personajes. Recordemos que estamos hablando de la sociedad neoyorquina de finales del siglo XIX. Todo está muy bien representado, me encantó ver a las mujeres con sus pomposos vestidos y los de las más adineras eran mucho más espectaculares así como sus casas, muy bonitas, 100 puntos para la ambientación. También las vemos dedicadas a actividades que entiendo eran las aficiones de una mujer en aquella época, como bordar, pintar, tocar el piano y asistir a actos benéficos que les hacían sentir que contribuían con los más necesitados.

Los hombres, en cambio, eran muy elegantes, siempre vestidos de negro y con sombrero. También hay quienes ocultan su homosexualidad tras el armario y buscan una esposa para cubrir las apariencias. Esto es algo nuevo para mí en cuanto a estas historias, pero me parece apropiado e imagino que seguiremos viendo más personajes en la misma situación.

Regarding the racial issue, we must be clear that in 1880 and in the northern United States slavery had already been abolished and black people were free and lived in tranquility and there were even rich people although they were not always accepted in all places, this means that they suffered from racism but they were used to it and lived separately from whites, they had a colony only for black people as well as a newspaper just for them and other things.

I hope to see much more of this topic considering that it was a moment in history where many changes occurred as the construction of the New York Central Station, the arrival of electricity, in this first season we could see Thomas Edison in the lighting of the lights in New York, an incredible show that I loved and we also saw the inclusion of Clara Barton pioneer of the Red Cross in the United States another part of history that I appreciate has been included in the series.

En cuanto al tema racial, hay que tener claro que en 1880 y en el norte de Estados Unidos ya se había abolido la esclavitud y los negros eran libres y vivían con tranquilidad e incluso había gente rica aunque no siempre eran aceptados en todos los lugares, esto quiere decir que sufrían el racismo pero estaban acostumbrados y vivían separados de los blancos, tenían una colonia solo para negros así como un periódico solo para ellos y otras cosas.

Espero ver mucho más de esta temática teniendo en cuenta que fue un momento de la historia donde se produjeron muchos cambios como la construcción de la Estación Central de Nueva York, la llegada de la electricidad, en esta primera temporada pudimos ver a Thomas Edison en el encendido de las luces de Nueva York, un espectáculo increíble que me encantó y también vimos la inclusión de Clara Barton pionera de la Cruz Roja en Estados Unidos otra parte de la historia que agradezco haya sido incluida en la serie.

Characters / Personajes

Marian Brook. Played by Louisa Gummer in her first appearance, I read that she is the youngest daughter of the great actress Meryl Streep. Her character is a simple, confident, good-hearted young woman who sometimes doesn't understand the way situations and people are treated in the big city. She is also very intelligent as she knows how to take advantage of every opportunity to make her way as well as to build bridges for the changes she sees as necessary and just.

Su personaje es una joven sencilla, segura de sí misma y de buen corazón, que a veces no entiende la forma en que se tratan las situaciones y las personas en la gran ciudad. También es muy inteligente, ya que sabe aprovechar todas las oportunidades para abrirse camino, así como tender puentes para los cambios que considera necesarios y justos.

Agnes Van Rhijn (Christine Baranski). At the beginning I felt a little shy with this character because I considered her authoritarian and old-fashioned but as the chapters went by she really won my esteem and I even said to myself: “how wise you are Aunt Agnes” 🤣

She is a widow with a strong character, with her opinions and decisions very much in tune with her beliefs and customs, she knows very well from her experience how society and people move.

Agnes Van Rhijn (Christine Baranski). Al principio me sentí un poco tímida con este personaje porque la consideraba autoritaria y anticuada pero con el paso de los capítulos se ganó realmente mi estima e incluso me dije: “qué sabia eres tía Agnes” 🤣.

Es una viuda con un carácter fuerte, con sus opiniones y decisiones muy ajustadas a sus creencias y costumbres, conoce muy bien por su experiencia cómo se mueve la sociedad y las personas.

Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon). Agnes’ sister, she remained single and now lives on her sister’s charity. She is a kind and submissive woman, the truth I hope in the next season to see more of this character as I found it a little weak and I want to see her bring out the character that surely have hidden.

Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Marian’s friend and Agnes’ secretary. She is a colored girl who has a past she had tried to forget but I am sure in the second season we will see more of her, her private life and her aspirations to become a famous writer.

Ada Brook (Cynthia Nixon). Hermana de Agnes, se quedó soltera y ahora vive de la caridad de su hermana. Es una mujer amable y sumisa, la verdad espero que en la próxima temporada se vea más de este personaje ya que me pareció un poco floja y quiero verla sacar el carácter que seguramente tiene escondido.

Peggy Scott (Denée Benton). Amiga de Marian y secretaria de Agnes. Es una chica de color que tiene un pasado que había intentado olvidar pero estoy segura de que en la segunda temporada veremos más de ella, su vida privada y sus aspiraciones de convertirse en una escritora famosa.

Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon). She is the wife of a great railroad magnate, one of the reasons why his family amassed much of his fortune. This woman is strong, determined and tenacious, she is eager to belong to that circle of high society something that will cost her work because she is not accepted for being considered one of the nouveau riche, she will suffer rebuffs and will be humiliated but in those situations is where we will see the intelligence of this woman.

She is one of my favorite characters because she is intelligent, determined and not afraid of failure. She is always supportive of her husband although in the last few episodes I saw her more concerned about being accepted than her husband’s safety.

George Russell (Morgan Spector). He is a very smart businessman and strategist, sometimes he can be considered as an unscrupulous person but he adores his wife and would do anything to please her so she can achieve everything she sets out to do or at least that is what was seen in this first season.

This marriage has two children Larry a nice boy with aspirations different from what his parents would like and Gladys a young girl who is just starting her life in society. We will know more about them in the future, I’m sure.

Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon). Es la esposa de un gran magnate del ferrocarril, una de las razones por las que su familia amasó gran parte de su fortuna. Esta mujer es fuerte, decidida y tenaz, está deseando pertenecer a ese círculo de la alta sociedad algo que le costará trabajo porque no es aceptada por ser considerada una de las nuevas ricas, sufrirá desaires y será humillada pero en esas situaciones es donde veremos la inteligencia de esta mujer.

Es uno de mis personajes favoritos porque es inteligente, decidida y no tiene miedo al fracaso. Siempre apoya a su marido aunque en los últimos episodios la vi más preocupada por ser aceptada que por la seguridad de su marido.

George Russell (Morgan Spector). Es un hombre de negocios y estratega muy inteligente, a veces puede ser considerado como una persona sin escrúpulos pero adora a su mujer y haría cualquier cosa por complacerla para que pueda conseguir todo lo que se propone o al menos eso es lo que se vio en esta primera temporada.

Este matrimonio tiene dos hijos Larry un chico simpático con aspiraciones diferentes a las que sus padres quisieran y Gladys una joven que recién comienza su vida en sociedad. Seguro que en el futuro sabremos más de ellos.

Conclusion / Conclusión

Many things were left unfinished and that’s what I don’t like that I will have to wait until 2023 to know more about the characters, in this first season only the life of the main actors was taken into account but there are also others who can contribute a lot like the maids, butlers and chefs. At the beginning we only saw them doing the necessary but in the last episodes they showed us advances of what would be their private life that I imagined would be developed in the next season.

In other things we were able to have answers, one of them I had already suspected and that’s why I say that Aunt Agnes is very wise. I didn’t want to leave this love part unresolved, and seeing the last chapter I can get an idea of what will come next year. It seems to me that we are going to see a lot of love is what I think.

I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of things in the second season, as I said it’s a time of many changes, but even though it’s a fiction series what’s coming will have to live up to the story.

Muchas cosas quedaron inconclusas y eso es lo que no me gusta que tendré que esperar hasta el 2023 para saber más de los personajes, en esta primera temporada solo se tomó en cuenta la vida de los actores principales pero también hay otros que pueden aportar mucho como las doncellas, mayordomos y chefs. Al principio solo los vimos haciendo lo necesario pero en los últimos episodios nos mostraron avances de lo que sería su vida privada que imaginé se desarrollaría en la siguiente temporada.

En otras cosas pudimos tener respuestas, una de ellas ya la sospechaba y por eso digo que la tía Agnes es muy sabia. No quería dejar esta parte de amor sin resolver, y viendo el último capítulo me puedo hacer una idea de lo que vendrá el próximo año. Me parece que vamos a ver mucho amor es lo que pienso.

Tengo ganas de ver muchas cosas en la segunda temporada, como he dicho es una época de muchos cambios, pero aunque sea una serie de ficción lo que venga tendrá que estar a la altura de la historia.
