Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody. [ENG-ESP]
A decir verdad no me gustan las películas biográficas dónde se ve lo peor del artista, el año pasado las más famosas de este tipo fueron Elvis y Blonde (película basada en la vida de Marilyn Monroe), películas de las que leí varias reseñas y también llegué a ver, pero de las que no quise expresar mi percepción a través de una publicación. En este sentido quiero decir que prefiero Elvis, es menos explicita del lado oscuro de la vida del artista.
Estoy consciente que estos artistas tuvieron una vida llena de excesos y la fama les causó problemas emocionales y hasta mentales, pero que necesidad hay de mostrar la miseria humana de los artistas que hicieron felices a tantas gente con su arte. Yo creo que todo se debe a que el amarillismo es lo que más dinero produce. Bueno, esa es solo mi opinión, muy pero muy personal, yo solo soy una persona que ve películas, no soy una experta en el séptimo arte ni nada por el estilo. A diferencia de mí existen muchas otras personas que les encanta ver cómo los artistas se revuelcan en la miseria que llaman vida y todas estás escenas les dan respuestas del porqué terminaron como lo hicieron.
To tell the truth I don’t like biographical films where you see the worst of the artist, last year the most famous of this type were Elvis and Blonde (film based on the life of Marilyn Monroe), films of which I read several reviews and also got to see, but of which I did not want to express my perception through a publication. In this sense I want to say that I prefer Elvis is less explicit of the dark side of the artist’s life.
I am aware that these artists had a life full of excesses and fame caused them emotional and even mental problems, but what is the need to show the human misery of artists who made so many people happy with their art. I think it’s all because yellow journalism is what makes the most money. Well, that’s just my very, very personal opinion, I’m just a person who watches movies, I’m not an expert in the seventh art or anything like that. Unlike me there are many other people who love to see how artists wallow in the misery they call life and all these scenes give them answers as to why they ended up the way they did.

Siguiendo este orden de ideas, una de las mejores que he visto es Bohemian Rhapsody, aunque Queen ni Freddy Mercury son de mi época, se que son referencia, marcaron una generación y todavía su música sigue vigente y por supuesto que sus canciones las he escuchado muchas veces. Pues bien, esa película te muestra de manera sutil, sin necesidad de escenas vulgares ni innecesarias, a mi parecer, lo que fue la vida íntima y privada de Freddy Mercury, dando al espectador insinuaciones de lo que acontecía en aquel momento pero también muestra de forma más marcada el talento de la persona y lo determinado que era.
Following this order of ideas, one of the best I have seen is Bohemian Rhapsody, although Queen and Freddy Mercury are not from my time, I am aware that they are a reference, they marked a generation and their music is still current and of course I have listened to their songs many times. Well, this movie shows you in a subtle way, without the need for vulgar or unnecessary scenes, in my opinion, what was the intimate and private life of Freddy Mercury, giving the viewer hints of what was happening at that time but also shows more markedly the talent of the person and how determined he was.

Cuando me enteré que en la película de Whitney Houston estaría Involucrado en la producción y guión Anthony McCarten quien también trabajó en Bohemian Rhapsody y en The Theory of Everything, me imaginé que esta película sería más a mi estilo, y no estaba equivocada. Aunque fue estrenada en diciembre de 2023 fue sino hasta este fin de semana que la pude ver.
A diferencia de los otros artistas que mencioné anteriormente, Whitney Houston si se me resulta bastante familiar ya que fue una de las mejores cantantes de los años 90 y principios de 2000, estando un poco más enterada de lo que fue su trayectoria artística y algunos de los escándalos relacionados con su vida privada y profesional, hasta el día de su muerte en el año 2012.
En esta película vemos los inicios de una joven con mucho talento, presionada y educada vocalmente por su madre quien era cantante y sabía que su hija podía dar mucho más de lo que mostraba, hasta que fue descubierta por Clive Davis quien enseguida la etiquetó como la mejor voz de su generación y como una joven vocalmente ambiciosa, ella estaba consciente de lo que podía hacer y prefería que sus canciones fuera incantables para ella con su imponente voz hacerlas posible.
When I heard that the Whitney Houston movie would be produced and scripted by Anthony McCarten, who also worked on Bohemian Rhapsody and The Theory of Everything, I figured this movie would be more my style and I wasn’t wrong. Although it was released in December 2023 it wasn’t until this weekend that I was able to see it.
Unlike the other artists I mentioned above, Whitney Houston does seem quite familiar to me as she was one of the best singers of the 90’s and early 2000’s, being a little more aware of her artistic career and some of the scandals related to her private and professional life, until the day of her death in 2012.
In this film we see the beginnings of a very talented young woman, pressured and educated vocally by her mother who was a singer and knew that her daughter could give much more than she showed, until she was discovered by Clive Davis who immediately labeled her as the best voice of her generation and as a vocally ambitious young woman, she was aware of what she could do and preferred that her songs were unattainable for her with her imposing voice to make them possible.

Cómo dije su vida privada es tocada de manera sutil, desde su primer amor, algo que yo desconocía totalmente. Tal vez, si viviera en esta época las cosas serían diferentes ya que existe más diversidad, inclusión y los fanáticos no están tan pendientes de la sexualidad de sus artistas favoritos, solo les importa el trabajo artístico que realizan, o eso creo, quien sabe.
No podía faltar su matrimonio e hija con el también cantante Bobby Brown, pero no te hagas ilusiones de que vas a saber mucho de su vida íntima y de la tormentosa relación que llevaban, aunque si hay como dije, insinuaciones que te hacen imaginar lo que pasaba entre ellos.
As I said her private life is touched in a subtle way, from her first love, something I was totally unaware of. Maybe, if I lived in this era things would be different as there is more diversity, inclusion and fans don’t care so much about the sexuality of their favorite artists, they only care about the artwork they do, or so I think. But, who knows.
Her marriage and her daughter with singer Bobby Brown could not be missing, but don’t get your hopes up that you will know much about their intimate life and the stormy relationship they had, although there are, as I say, insinuations that make you imagine what was going on between them.

Una de las cosas en las que pensé viendo esta película y otras, es que es común que los artistas sean traicionados por las personas en las que mas confían, de las que presumen por tenerlas a su lado y confían en que les sean leales, pero no importan si son manager o de su misma sangre, cuando se trata de dinero no hay limitaciones para que una persona quiera aprovecharse, robar, estafar y más cuando el dueño y el que trabaja por ese dinero tiene otras obligaciones.
Que puedo decir de la banda sonora, es genial, pasar 1 hora 46 minutos con las canciones de Whitney Houston en conciertos, estudios de televisión, videos, películas, me encantó. Tenía una voz realmente impresionante y quedas embelesado con sus canciones aunque la protagonista no sea tan parecida a la real, pero de igual manera me parece que su trabajo de personificación es muy destacable.
Hablando de película no se podría dejar de hablar de The Bodyguard, producción que protagonizó junto a Kevin Costner y que en esta película se toca como parte importante de su vida pero siento que no tanto a nivel profesional sino más bien personal ya que durante el rodaje atravesó una situación que destrozaría a cualquiera.
One of the things I thought when watching this movie and others, is that it is common for artists to be betrayed by the people they trust the most, the ones they presume to have by their side and trust that they are loyal to them, but no matter if they are managers or of the same blood, when it comes to money there are no limitations for a person to want to take advantage, steal, swindle and more when the owner and the one who works for that money has other obligations.
What can I say about the soundtrack, it’s great, spending 1 hour 46 minutes with Whitney Houston songs in concerts, TV studios, videos, movies, I loved it. She had a really impressive voice and you get enraptured with her songs even if the protagonist doesn’t look so much like the real one, but I still think her imitation work is very remarkable.
Speaking of a movie, I couldn’t stop talking about The Bodyguard, a production he starred in with Kevin Costner and that in this film is touched upon as an important part of his life but I feel that not so much on a professional level but rather a personal one since during the filming he went through a situation that would bring anyone down.

Con respecto a sus excesos, todos sabemos que los tuvo y esa fue la causa de su muerte. Claro que vemos en la película escenas en las que se ve mal física y mentalmente, a demás creo que el hecho de no poder ser la Whitney de antes y poder hacer lo que hacía, hizo que su adicción la venciera. A veces creemos que los artistas por tener dinero lo tienen todo y resulta que una de las razones por las que se derrumban es por la presión para conseguir dinero haciendo lo que saben hacer, sin importar el daño que ellos les hacen a sus cuerpos, el desgaste físico que conlleva trabajar en esa profesión y la única solución que encuentran para mantenerse de pie es con sustancias que a la final los destruyen. Son malas decisiones pero es lo que vemos en este tipo de biopic.
Regarding her excesses, we all know she had them and that was the cause of her death. Of course we see in the movie scenes where she looks bad physically and mentally, I also think that the fact of not being able to be the Whitney of before and be able to do what she did made her addiction defeat her. Sometimes we think that artists have it all because they have money and it turns out that one of the reasons they collapse is because of the pressure to make money doing what they know how to do, regardless of the damage they do to their body, the physical wear and tear that comes with working in that profession and the only solution they find to keep themselves going is with substances that in the end destroy them. They are bad decisions but that’s what we see in this kind of biopic.

Aunque si me gustó mucho la película, considero que tiene sus huecos en la trama y tal vez haya faltado mucho en que profundizar, pero en casi dos horas no cabe una vida. Una de las cosas que me sacaron de onda es que por un momento pensé que su madre se había muerto, no sabía en qué momento pero el tiempo transcurría en la historia, los personajes hacían sus vidas por separado y ella no estaba, pero después en un momento crucial para Whitney ella apareció sin explicación, eso me causó un poco de confusión.
Pero en general estuvo muy bien y si al igual que yo te gustan las películas biográficas que apelan más a la insinuación y a la inteligencia del espectador para sacar conclusiones en vez de ser tan explícitas mostrando poco respeto al fallecido, pues está es una película que te va a gustar y que te recomiendo y más si eres de esa generación que nos deleitamos con la increíble voz de Whitney Houston.
Although I liked the movie a lot, I think it has its holes in the plot and maybe it lacked a lot of depth, but in almost two hours it doesn’t fit a life. One of the things that threw me off is that for a moment I thought her mother had died, I didn’t know at what point but time passed in the story, the characters went about their lives separately and she was gone, but then at a crucial moment for Whitney she appeared without explanation, that caused me a bit of confusion.
But overall it was very good and if like me you like biographical films that appeal more to the insinuation and the intelligence of the viewer to draw conclusions instead of being so explicit showing little respect for the deceased, this is a movie that you will like and I recommend it and more if you are of that generation that we delight us with the incredible voice of Whitney Houston.

Whitney es una gran artista, su voz es única e inolvidable. No vi todavía esta película, pero concuerdo contigo en que prefiero cuando se enfocan más en otros aspectos de su vida, como su carrera, su fama, su familia, pero dejando de lado los detalles escabrosos que ya los conocemos de todos modos. Así que me alegra que esta película sea sutil en ese sentido.
Entonces está película te va a gustar, claro que el tema de drogas se toca pero con sensibilidad y ya el que está viendo la película sabe lo que está haciendo o va a hacer.
Tienes que verla.
Amiga interesante, voy a verla pues me gustó mucho la película de Whitney El Guardaespaldas, pero se de ella solo su vida llena de excesos y su trágica muerte, y aquí podré ver sus inicios. Gracias por publicar

Definitivamente es una película que quiero ver, más aun cuando comentas que se parece un poco al estilo que tuvo Bohemiam Rhapsody que me gustó bastante. Concuerdo contigo en que no es necesario mostrar la miseria del artista para conocer su vida, eso ya lo vimos mientras vivía, pero si dar ciertas pistas y que el espectador saque sus propias conclusiones.
Whitney no es de las artistas de mi época, yo estaba muy niña cuando ella estaba en el apogeo de su carrera, sin embargo, su voz siempre me ha cautivado y hasta el día de hoy, entro a Youtube para escuchar algunas de sus canciones, así que sin duda la voy a ver, me podrías indicar si está en algún streaming en especifico?
Hola, bueno a principios de los noventa yo también estaba pequeña, pero ya desde el 2000 hasta 2012 fecha de su muerte pues ya tenía conciencia y como dices su voz era increíble que yo estaba adolescente y me encantaba.
Yo la Vi en HBO, creo que tambien la puedes conseguir en Netflix.

I'm the opposite, I like biopics where they show both sides, the good and the bad. I loved Blonde and Elvis.
This Whitney Houston biopic I haven't had a chance to see it, but she is an artist I remember, I wasn't a big fan of her music, but she had songs that marked an era, very successful, and I remember the movie The Bodyguard, a hit for the time.

Sure, it's not that his dark side is not shown, why yes it is done but with more tact, as in the case of Freddy Mercury.
That's why I liked Elvis more, he had a normal life with ups and downs, sometimes a little naive, but you get the picture. You could see him happy and being a normal person but also fame and work wore out his personality. But in the case of Rubia, it's like nothing good ever happened to her, I didn't feel empathy for her at any point because it was like no one really knew her, always in character. I don't know, I don't think someone can live a whole life like that.
No sabía de la existencia de esta película, pero sin lugar a dudas me gustaría verla, tampoco soy mucho de ver películas biográficas a menos que de verdad me encante la celebridad de la que trate, sin embargo me gustan muchas canciones de Whitney y precisamente el tema "I wanna dance with somebody" es uno de mis favoritos.
Este tipo de películas no siempre son fieles a la vida del artista, muchas veces rayan en el amarillismo con tal de llamar la atención de la audiencia, por eso siempre las veo con el fin de entretenerme más que documentarme, por eso es que, tal y como dices, esta tiene algunos huecos en la trama, porque muchas veces solo hacen el film con la finalidad de capturar a la audiencia y ya.

Yo también pienso que algunas de estas películas son muy amarillistas y me imagino que es porque eso vende más, otras son muy sutiles como en homenaje al artista y estas son perfectas para el fanático que no quiere ver a su artista favorita en condiciones deplorables.
