Robert Johnson is probably the father of the blues. At least of the recorded Blues. That song was recorded in 1938.

Ahahahahahaha. It's a straight line from there to here, but you almost have to follow it to see how it happened.

If you want to cheat for a couple of stops, listen to Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Those three really changed the blues in the 50s and 60s.
