The Mystery of Learning Mathematics - Why a lot of students Fear Mathematics

avatar

Education like they always say is the key to success and that can't be denied. There have been a lot of saying around trying to downplay the importance of education. Some say it is a scam while some say it is not really a priority to be successful. But at the end of the day, we can't deny the fact that education will always play a paramount aspect in our life and that's just the truth. Growing up, I fall into the populi category of people who at one point lose interest in those education and school stuff. It really get so serious that at times I feel like dropping out of school due to a lot of reasons. I can't just been able to see myself in academic sector. But well thank God for the parent one has which makes one skip that phase through.

Growing up, one of the subject I dislike so much with passion is mathematics. I strongly believe it is not only me. I battle with Understanding whatever is been taught around that subject and after so much trying to develop interest in that subject, I gave up which causes a sudden hatred developed towards the subject, anything about mathematics and even the teacher taking us then. I will say one of the things that caused it more is the fact that I didn't like calculations from onset. Yes I prefer to read letters and words instead of solving. All other subjects that involves reading, my interest tank is always full but when it comes to calculations related subjects which most of the time is mathematics, the interest is not just always there. Even though years later, I developed interest and am now studying civil engineer in the university. But ....

After few research, I discovered the issue is not only related to only me. A lot of students in high school suffered it. Does it mean the way the brain is configured, it didn't favour calculations? But there are people who love calculation, then what is wrong. I have come to discover the brain always work in a way that it process what you dictate for it. If you discover you lose interest in a particular thing, the more you allow it process deep within you that you can't have interest towards that particular thing, fellow, it becomes difficult for you to develop interest later.

Psychologically, it becomes difficult for you to love what you have already made up your mind to hate deep within you. I think that's what affect me and a lot of students. The moment they develop this loss of interest towards calculations or anything related to mathematics, the brain automatically process it and this hatred developed. No matter how well you can teach mathematics or the charisma you have as the teacher, the fact that the student lacks the interest and in fact a hatred has developed towards it, it will be difficult to process anything or understand anything towards that subject.

So instead of the constant flogging of those set of students, they need counselling. If the skill of counselling can be apply, perhaps they can develop the interest back and then it will aid them to assimilate and understand what has been taught. At first I always taught mathematics is hard due to the calculations. Well years later I discovered it is not really hard, it just depend on interest. In fact no subject is hard as far as you have the interest to learning it.

Math was the worst for me too. And now I kinda really like it! I also find it rather simple and easy. I believe it's probably the easiest subject in school! Perhaps the problem is it isn't taught right, or you forget the material during summer and then you have these holes in your learning that make it increasingly difficult as the years go by. Or they teach you geometry for a really long time and by the time you're done you've forgotten all about algebra or something, so again there's holes in your learning.

With other subjects, it's easy to learn just enough to write the test and then forget, cos nothing builds up, nothing depends on anything else. But if you learn math just to pass the test and then forget it all, you're screwed. You can't just pick up the new stuff on the spot, and it becomes obvious that you were never really learning cos you were never really interested, whereas with other subjects this fact remains hidden cos you can just memorize the new material.
