Tuberculosis: Understanding the ancient disease

avatar

So many myths written about tuberculosis and what it actually causes. Growing up, one of the things I so much feared about tuberculosis is having that notion of coughing till death. It can really be dangerous right? I always think tuberculous is part of the disease that is not curable. Well as time goes on, one begin to conquer that fear due to the exposure in knowledge and ideas as one grows up. Today I will be sharing with us some of the vital informations you need to know about tuberculosis which might want to shape your life and understanding also about tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection that usually attacks the lungs. It can also spread to other parts of the body, like the brain and spine. This TB that I am talking about has a long and storied history, with evidence of its presence dating back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptian mummies show signs of TB, and it is believed to have afflicted individuals throughout various historical periods. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, TB was a major cause of death in many industrialized countries, earning it the grim nickname "consumption." Advances in healthcare and the development of antibiotics, such as streptomycin, played a crucial role in reducing TB's mortality rate.

Causes and Transmission

There is so much ways tuberculosis can be caused and even transfer. We should also understand that TB is primarily an airborne disease. When an infected person with active TB coughs or sneezes, tiny droplets containing the bacteria can be inhaled by those nearby.

However, I will like us to understand also that not everyone who inhales these bacteria will become sick. The immune system of most people can effectively fight off the TB bacteria, preventing active disease. Those who do become sick typically have weakened immune systems and this is the reason why healthy scientists always prioritise keeping your immune system in a top notch state.

Anything that can actually affect your immune system has generally affected your health state and gives room for diseases of whatsoever kind to penetrate through tour body system.

Symptoms

When we talk about symptoms, we should understand it can actually helps us to treat the disease at a early stage before it aggravate to a very big issue in our body system. When we are able to know the symptoms early, we can be able to tackle it also early. The symptoms of TB can vary depending on the affected area of the body.

However, these are some common symptoms of pulmonary TB which I believe at one point we have been common with;

  • Chest pain

  • Coughing up blood

  • Fatigue

  • Fever

  • Night sweats

  • Weight loss

  • Diagnosis

Not only that, but also TB is diagnosed with a combination of tests, including:
  • A chest X-ray

  • A sputum test to look for the bacteria that causes TB

  • A blood test to look for antibodies to the bacteria

  • A skin test to see if you have been exposed to the bacteria

Prevention and Treatment

We need to understand that for every disease, it is better to adhere to the prevention before resulting to treatment. There are a number of preventive measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of TB, including:

  • Vaccination: The Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is available in many countries and can help prevent severe forms of TB in children.
  • Infection control: Proper ventilation and good hygiene practices in healthcare facilities and households can reduce TB transmission.
  • Treatment of latent TB: People with latent TB infection, who are not sick but have the bacteria in their bodies, can receive preventive treatment to reduce their risk of developing active TB.

Public health measures: Screening and early diagnosis of active TB cases, as well as contact tracing, are essential to interrupt transmission.

TB is treatable and curable with appropriate medication. The most common treatment regimen involves a combination of antibiotics taken over several months. The standard treatment for drug-susceptible TB includes four antibiotics: isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol. Patients must adhere strictly to their treatment regimen to ensure complete recovery and prevent the development of drug-resistant strains.

Conclusion

TB remains a significant global health challenge, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare and high rates of HIV/AIDS. However, with continued research, improved diagnostics, and enhanced healthcare systems, progress is being made in the fight against TB.

By understanding the causes, symptoms, and prevention measures, we can contribute to the global effort to eradicate this ancient but still formidable disease. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are crucial not only for individual patients but also for the broader effort to control TB and reduce its impact on society.
