The Bible doesn’t give a one-sentence answer, but it traces evil through a few major themes which is,

1.Human choice
Genesis 3 tells thatbGod created a good world, Genesis 1:31. Humans were given freedom and chose to disobey God.
Sin entered: Broken relationship with God, with each other, and with creation
*Death and suffering entered, Pain, toil, conflict became part of life
*Human nature changed hGenesis 6:5 says human thoughts/intentions became bent toward evil

So biblically, much evil comes from human choices. James 1:14-15, Jeremiah 17:9.

1. A spiritual opposition exists
   The Bible describes a personal evil being, often called Satan or the devil, who opposes God.
   *John 8:44 Calls him a liar and murderer from the beginning
   *1 Peter 5:8 Describes him as prowling like a lion, looking for someone to devour
   *Ephesians 6:12 Says the struggle isn’t just against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil.
   So not all evil is just human. There’s a tempter/accuser in the narrative

Romans 8:20-22 says creation itself is “subjected to futility” and “groans” waiting for renewal. So evil exists now, but the Bible says it’s temporary.

1. Why does God allow it to continue?
   2 Peter 3:9: God is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but all to come to repentance
   Habakkuk 1-2: The prophet asks God why evil people prosper. God’s answer: He sees it, He’ll judge, but He’s working on a longer timeline
   Joseph’s story, Genesis 50:20: “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” Evil choices happen, but God can work through them

Biblically, evil exists because of human rebellion, spiritual opposition, and a world that’s broken but not abandoned. The Bible claims evil isn’t how things started and isn’t how they’ll end.
