That fateful evening in the most remote area on the outskirts of Kenya, Chikatata was born. The bouncing new baby boy had been long expected, as his parents had been married for six years. However, the birth of the baby boy was greeted with heartbreaking misfortune: both of his legs were malformed. As a result, he could not walk during his childhood years.

According to Chikatata, the most painful experience due to his leg condition was when his childhood friends would leave him at home and go to school. Chikatata always dreaded being alone at home. His hometown is located in a mountainous region with many hills. Near his house, there is a long hill with a beautiful scenery. The natural features of the hill and the daily activities that took place there served as a source of inspiration for Chikatata.

What interested him about the hill was how his playmates would always run through it to get to school, as well as observing various wild animals ascending and descending the hill. All these events thrilled Chikatata, and he would often reminisce about the scenic features and activities on the hill.

One day, driven by the scenic events on the hill, Chikatata decided to visit it without the help of his great grandmother, even though it was about half a kilometer away from his house. He crawled to the hill, but he soon realized that he could injure himself due to the rough terrain he was crawling on. However, Chikatata's strong motivation was that if he could climb the hill, he would be able to join the race to school with his playmates.

Considering his physical limitations and the dangerous terrain, something inside him pushed him to stand erect, walk, and run to meet his playmates at their respective schools. He attempted to stand, but his legs were cracking and it was painful, so he stopped. On the third day, he tried again and realized that, although it was painful, he could slightly move his legs. Chikatata savored and cherished the moment he discovered that there was some life in his legs. He celebrated this discovery on his own and never told anyone. He said, "With this little life in my legs, I will outrun both the animals and my playmates on the long hill."

On his fifteenth attempt, Chikatata was able to stand upright and walk a little distance. Finally, on the twentieth attempt, he walked into his great grandmother's room to tell her that he could walk and would need a school uniform for his education.

Furthermore, when his family and community members discovered that he could walk, there was a joyous celebration for this great achievement. The next day, he joined his playmates in going to school. It wasn't easy for him at first, as he had to leap while others raced to school. For about a month, he leapt to school, but he never gave up. He always said to himself, "I must outrun my mates and the animals on the hill."

Surprisingly, in his eleventh year, he started outrunning most of his playmates. By his thirteenth year, he eventually outpaced all his peers. Later, he began to gain recognition in the inter-house sports events at his school, where he won many awards as the fastest runner.

In his fifteenth year, he was nominated for an interview for his nation's under-seventeen athletic event. He came second in the 100-meter event but third in the 200-meter event. However, in the next annual national athletic event, he took the first position in both the 100 meters and 200 meters events. These great accomplishments led to his selection for the world athletic event. It was during this world athletic event that Chikatata relived his life time experience before the journalist after he was coronated as the world fastest runner in that year. Chikatata was known by this quote "my better experience gave me a beautiful experience".

Secondly, is this a real-life story? creative non-fiction involves telling personal stories with the creative elements of fiction. The prompt race is the monthly fiction prompt. Fiction is the weaving of made-up stories. We hope this helps clarify. Thank you for sharing your story with us, and for your engagement with other members of the community.
