$1,000,000 Gold Maple Leaf Coin

I am aware that there are a great number of rare and valuable coins or rounds out there, but the vast majority of these coins do not concern commoners like you and me for the simple reason that they are prohibitively expensive. The majority of the world’s rarest coins have astronomically high numismatic values; more specifically, these coins are expensive not due to the metals they are made of but rather because of their scarcity, history, or significance. But there is this one coin, which is one of the most valuable in the world, and its value almost entirely comes from its metal composition. I’m talking about the $1 million dollar Gold Canadian Maple Leaf. A humongous coin!

The Royal Canadian Mint struck the world’s first coin worth one million dollars in the year 2007. Yes, It has a face value of $1 million (CAD), but its melt value is definitely higher than $1 million. The coin has a diameter of 50 centimetres, a thickness of 3 centimetres, and it weighs 100 kilograms or 3,215 troy ounces. The coin is 99.9% pure gold.

Five of these humongous (yes, I have to say it twice) coins have been bought by buyers from different parts of the world to date. One of the most recent deals of this coin took place in a public auction. It was purchased for a price of $4.02 million dollars (USD). However, that was probably quite some time ago, as the price of 100 kg of gold in today’s market is $5.2 million dollars (USD).

In 2017, one of the $1 million Gold Canadian Maple Leaf was stolen from the Bode Museum in Berlin. Once outside, the burglars loaded the humongous coin onto a wheelbarrow and continued on their way. There have been no further sightings of the coin; it has never been found again. Common sense tells me that the thieves probably melted down the coin so that it cannot be traced and then sold it on the black market. Gone!

I followed this news item too.
It was an inside job as the perpetrators knew the security weaknesses but didn't execute well. Thus the gold is most likely in Chinese vaults in 1 kilo bars not long after.

I think the largest gold coin ever made was struck by the Perth Mint.
