Reviewing "Startup" - an Exciting Drama with a Crypto Twist!

avatar

Sitting around the house looking for a new Netflix series to binge watch I happened upon Startup. I read a little of the information teaser and became interested because it involved creating a new crytocurrency.

The premise is that a supersmart code writer comes up with a new crypto coin called GenCoin after seven years of hard work and code writing. An unlikely partnership is formed between her, a young idealistic wall street broker and a Haitian street gang leader.

The startup money to get this coin off the ground comes from illegal stolen money from the broker's father who left his son holding the bag and took off for parts unknown. The trio gets their startup money hacked by a black hat and a crooked FBI agent. And things go from bad to worse from there.

Adam Brody plays the Wall Street guy as Nick Talman. You think he has the perfect life in the beginning - a fiance with a rich daddy and lots of connections. But he wants to do more and falls under the GenCoin spell of a new coin for the people.

Otmara Marrero plays Izzy Morales, a brilliant but troubled girl who watches her life's work stolen from her and gets herself into lots of trouble trying to get revenge and outdo the coin she created by coming up with an alternative.

Edi Gathegi enthralls as Ronald Dacey, a Haitian gang leader who wants better for his hood and his family. It's a hard sell to his crew and even his wife can't understand the transition he's looking for. But he's determined to drag them all into a better future.

Martin Freeman plays Phil Rask, a corrupt FBI agent who has his corruption turned back on him by the Russian mob who ends up with GenCoin. He has some real issues and almost cracks up with the things he's pushed to. There's hope for his soul though - if he lives that long!

One of my favorite characters, who is not introduced until Season 2, is Ron Perlman playing Wes Chandler. I recognized Perlman right away from his role in Sons of Anarchy. He's a blast from Ron's past, who had dealings with his corrupt father. He ends up funding the new venture and provides some creative marketing as well as a safe haven for the startup crew to get down to business.

I highly recommend this series, for its dark drama, twists and turns, its commentary about how the world works today. I'm only partway through Season 2, with Season 3 ready to go, and a Season 4 still in the works.

Let me know if you try this out and enjoy it!

It took me such a long time to figure out where I had seen that actor in the first image before.

Thanks for the heads up for this series. It looks gritty, complex and watchable. We are forever looking for a good watchable movie or TV show on streaming services.

This one has really held our attention. Have you watched the Ozark series? It reminds me of that, only on steriods, lol.
