My Garden's Greens are Growing Great!
Mostly, Herbs and Lettuces
...But some Veggies, too!
ABOVE,I've planted a few different types of Salad greens, including a few types of lettuces, arugula, spinaches, too. The Red Romaine has been harvested a few times, and I even had some cut and I sent it to my brother's house.
Green Romaine, Butter Crisp Head Lettuce, Black-Seeded Simpson Lettuce, And other greens are growing too for nightly salads (wish you lived closer, you and the family could walk over and cut what you need for daily meals).
Below: Sweet Basil. I have some Greek Basil growing as well.
Below: Green ribbed Chard left, and Red ribbed right.
Below: Baby Spinach Greens.
I am at the gardening stage where, I am trying to feed my family for longer periods of time. I know now, that there is a typical Gardening Season called The Hunger Gap. That's the period between last harvest in fall and using up those vegetables and fruits, and the first harvest in spring.
So, now, I am trying to plan how to cover that period, between fall harvest and spring harvest. how do others? Canning and Curing. Planting enough Onion and Potato to last during between the harvests over winter. Canning fruits picked and making pickles, and putting enough tomato plants in ground to harvest so I can make canned tomato or tomato sauce, to last until first tomato harvest. Planting foods such as Spaghetti Squash, Pumpkin, and other gourds that I can make meals with over winter. It's not going to be easy, but I want to provide for my family, no matter what is coming.
**Below: Golden Yellow Peas. One of 3 varieties growing. **
The biggest problem with the peas, is, I eat them as I water... Pick, eat. Pick, eat. They're good... they never make it inside. And those that I do not eat? my daughter does, while we chat by the garden! LOL!
Gardening To DO:
- I just replanted more Red Romaine, and Green Butter Crisp lettuce
- harvesting lettuce daily
- tie up even more tomato, build trellis
- weed more between onions, perhaps begin to cull some onion and thin the plantings.
- thin carrot, too
Clearly, the carrot ABOVE, are over seeded and need thinning. I will use some of the greens for salads, and use the larger of the ones I weed out for some cooking, while allowing those left to get even BIGGER.
