There Is No SINGLE Best Way To Start Seeds. OR, Is There?

Best Seed Starter.jpg

There's all kinds of advice for how BEST to start your seeds indoors.

For me, after a few different trial and error attempts,
I have been starting my seeds the same way. I start with a nice, healthy, INERT seed starter. I sift it, to remove any larger bits, as I want NOTHING in the way of my seeds germinating. Even smaller chunks of bits can stop a seed from reaching towards the light.

Some seeds, like these ONION SEED STARTS are as tiny as the head of a pin! And a tiny bit of woody material in the seed starter will keep it from germinating. I made a video, step by step, showing how I go thru the entire process of getting the seed starter sifted, pre-moistened, watered, and sterile for seed germianting.

Most of you know, I prefer to grow my own food, locally. It's healthier for my family, and for the planet. I know what goes into my foods, and what chemicals are NOT in my food. Also, It cuts down on carbon emissions, less trucking, planes, trains, and boats, to get fresh foods to my table.

And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.

I'm not great at starting things from seed. I just chuck it in and hope for the best, which isn't the greatest philosophy! It's late summer here so I've started autumn seeds and they're busting out the soil fast as it's so warm here still (not hot hot, just warm temperate, which is ideal really!)

It is below ZERO C here, sometimes dropping to close to minus 18C
I have my setup in the basement with heat matts, grow lights, and really fluffy loose seed starter. It really does help get seeds started.

This is really helpful. I love how you explained the process step by step, especially for tiny seeds like onions. Your methos makes seed starting feel less intimidating and more achievable.

We are going into town today to fill in some holes in our seed inventory and get a little more soil. Mostly to avoid clearing off the shelves we use in the garage for starting seeds. Its more fun to buy seeds that clean up. But we hope to get seeds going soon. Great videos 👍
