There's Somethin Happenin Here

"... what it is, ain't exactly clear." - S. Stills

I admit, there's definitely something fishy going on in my gardens! But all who know me, know I am hardly serious about much in life. Whimsy, for sure, abounds...

Here at the camp site, as in most of my life, I prefer to bring a smile to people. I could just have plants, sure, but I prefer that as people look closer and closer, they see more and more details hidden. And I like it when people, as they discover some tiny hidden thing, they smile.

Above: Swimming through the greens and flowers of my gardens, I have a tiny school of Bluefish, with their tiny blue fins.

Below: Top left are the herbs planted, swimming thru the center are pachysandra, hosta, native and transplanted grasses, and some exotic flowers and perennials One of our challenges here, is we're under some heavy pine cover, so, plants need to be tolerant of partial shade, and an acidic soil...

Above: Rosemary
Below: Oregano

As I mentioned above, most of my camp site is under cover of some pine trees. Great, because it gives partial shade, but, it also means, I get a LOT of pine needles dropping into my gardens. I am embracing the needles, but I do clean them up some in other places. I've learned to "rake" the needles out of flowers, but leave them in the areas around plants. They eventually break down and provide organics, not any where near as fast as say, grass clippings or leaves from oak, maple, and other trees, but eventually (think a few years), yes they do break down.

Above: Perhaps later today, or tomorrow, I will pick this Cucumber and add it to my harvests.
Below: Back row, hanging flowers, 6 tomato plants, and a cucumber. Front: Beach Rose, two Salvia, some pansies, and a rose.

It's been a learning process for me, here in this new garden. For one, I need to readjust my thinking. I used to plant her,e growing up, but it was in pots. Now, I am planting in ground, so, I need to remember the soil type, as opposed to what I am used to at home.

No surprise, the beach rose is doing great, better than the other rose bush, with the sandy soil here! Next year's plantings, need to take into consideration the shade, the sandy clay acidic soil. The lavender I planted here, is struggling. Mostly the acidic soil is to blame. I'll need to amend the soil to help it next year. And future plantings need to be based on the real conditions.

Love the blue fish swimming through your garden 🙂 I was going to mention pine needles will make the soil acidic but you got there 😉 my garden is under some white pine trees. I used raised beds to avoid dealing with the acidic soil but I did plant blueberries directly in the soil and they love it

Definitely planting Blueberry in the early spring. We got the place too late for that this spring.

I LOVE LOVE the bluefins in your garden !LOLZ they look fantastic... what an ode ❣️ And of course...you have moved from planting in bags and pots to directly into the soil... so dealing directly with what mother nature is providing. Was that more intentional with this garden then? Or to do with camp regulations? The pine cover must be tricky... we have a massive tree overlooking our back garden (it is in our neighbour's yard) and it literally sucks all the moisture with its roots and together with the back neighbour's treeline, shades out almost all the afternoon sun. I grow my veg in our front garden as a result... but we are now talking about putting down artificial grass (not ideal) or paving and pots in the back garden because no type of grass has ever grown there successfully and we have redone it twice with rolls of grass and tried seed.

One more month! yay 💙. !LUV !ALIVE !PIZZA

My Veggies are still growing in Fabric Grow Bags. Only flowers, herbs, annuals and perennials are growing in ground. I still tightly control the soil in my veggie planting.
