Tired of... not being Retired!

Ever Wonder, What's Next?

I am looking at the calendar, and thinking back in time. I mean, it's 2023??? When did that happen? It was only just 1987? I had the world by the tail... recent college grad, working hard onstage for a well known rock group.. and just plain enjoying life.

This is HARD WORK!

Yes, indeedy, do! Hard work. You know: First to come and last to leave? Working for that minimum wage.

Up early, meet a truck, load in some gear, work 16 or 18 more hours, including a show, loud show, a concert, bunch of bands, screaming audiences... where am I? What town? Ahh, the Marriott. We'll work all day, and drive all night, and wake up in another town. Detroit. Or Chicago. Wait, no, not a Marriot, a Hilton. Who hasn't been inside one of the Hilton's, right?

Fast forward twenty years, and it's similar... it's no longer a Rock Concert, but, essentially the same. Trucks. Hotels. Gear. Roadies. Some corporate thing, or maybe a President or Premiere, but really the same thing over and over, only different cities. Take some empty space, set up stuff. Make an event. Make the gear go away. Go do it all over again somewhere else.

Looking at the calendar, I've done more events in the past, than I have coming up. Many more. I am MUCH closer to not working than starting my career... so...

What's Next?

Above, see me on the foredeck of a small 41 foot NordHavn. That's a classically designed, powered trawler. In short, a big boat, like an RV on the water. The one pictured above, has one cabin and sleeps 4 in a pinch. Small Galley Kitchen, storage, enough fuel and water storage to get away from it all. For a couple, it could make for a nice summer, of travel. For me? I want more.

My Vision

I have the wander bug. I want to see more. Do more. I was raised by the ocean. My dad taught me at a young age. Seamenship, sailing, and more. We've always had boats. Little ones. Take it out for the day and home by dinner.

My goal, for the immediate future, is to learn to be aboard, for a weekend... a week, and more. To learn to live in a small space, to find my way from point to point, and to explore my local area. To that end, I have in mind a small 27 foot Ranger Tug, to explore my area, the New England coastline.

She has a small galley, cabin for 2, room for a small dinghy to explore ashore, and enough storage for a week, maybe 10 days, without a struggle at all. It's enough boat for learning how to live aboard, to find my way. Maybe my last summer or two before retiring, will be aboard, my little Ranger Tug.

Really Get Away

But after that, when I pull the plug on the world? Leave the rat race? Retire? Well, Hello, Alaska... my first summer will be aboard my new 475 Nordhavn. It's a much bigger 47 foot, two cabin, ocean going trawler, meant to cross oceans if need be. Two engines, two generators. Enough fuel, capacity to make a month's worth of fresh drinking water per day, freezer and fridge space, and dry storage for a couple to live for a long month or two before resupplying.

I want to see and explore many of the coves and inlets along the Alaskan Coast, that first summer. I want to see what's left of the glaciers, and see Bald Eagles, Black and Brown Bear, Salmon in the wild. See Orca, and pods of whales and dolphin in the deep.

I want to spend my first winter, exploring the west coast of Central America, see The Galapagos, as Darwin and Huxley saw them. See the Panama Canal, and then, my next season in the Caribbean.

I want to see earth. The parts few have seen.

Who Knows, What's Next?

One thing I know, in all my research of trawler life, and retired life in boating, is, do NOT get locked into a schedule. First of all, Mother Nature dictates MUCH. The winds, the tides, the weather.
So plan, lots... but always plan in pencil. Being retired means, not following the clocks and calendars. It means, pack the boat. Fuel up your 3000 gallons of diesel, and fill the freezer with meat. Pack the Bombay Sapphire and load up on fresh produce, while you can... but, keep and eye on the sky, and winds... because, you do not dictate... you follow the seas, and let the world guide you.

Explore. Drift. See. ... and Enjoy.

If you follow me, you know I prefer to grow my own food for my family and friends. You probably also know, my love language seems to be serving. For my family and friends, that means, cooking and serving them healthy, locally grown food, whenever and wherever I can. Local food has a much lower impact on our local, national, and global environment.

And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.

Aah, I absolutely loved reading this, Greg 💗 Your passion and love for the ocean is palpable. I was carried on the wings of your own dreams for your future retirement. I think you have a solid plan to build around. Acknowledging that retirement is a time for no longer being held prisoner to time is critical. We all need to be able to ease into each day; no deadlines, no demands - just a commitment to love ourselves and our families; to value what is near and dear to our hearts, and to live with joy. Your boats all look like great choices! I am sure they will all serve you well at the appropriate times in your journey. Maybe I'll welcome you into one of my local ports one fine evening and we'll share a few G&T's and catch up on life... or I'll surprise you at one of yours! This post truly warmed my heart.

As for my hopes and dreams for retirement? I'd love to hike up more mountains, and see more of this beautiful wild planet on foot. Breathe more... sigh in wonder... more... And road trip more! Just explore... and write! I'd love to write a book or a few... I haven't quite strategised the how and where yet... Still a bit tied up raising kids 😂 😍 Much love 💗 !LUV !ALIVE !PIMP

😂I shall make you a deal... I shall tie them up with the hubby later this year... and fly away... and I'll meet you in San Fran! Oh wait, that was already the plan haha... looking forward to the fun that is sure to arise with you crazy awesome lot! but yes you are right! and I have dragged them up one mountain already in the past 6 months... there will be many more coming this summer!!! Kids will not be my excuse for not living my life. I will live it as fully as possible with them and then take my time too to live a little more on the side. !LUV !ALIVE !hivebits

While Hive, Welcome Wagon, Steemit, and UU have made the world a smaller place, it is still huge.
I want to explore so much of this vast world.

And I guess, Hive has opened my eyes, some. I want to visit so many people, too, now.

Absolutely brilliant Greg!
Be prepared to change direction and follow the seas!
This is just perfect and similar to what we what we want to do albeit on a smaller scale. Living on a canal boat in the UK exploring the waterways!

It's not for the seameanship, so much as the attitude and lifestyle.

This is a wonderful post and what many of us aspire to when we think of retiring.

Although the world is now a global village in terms of communications, it is still a vast place where there are so many places that need to be explored by us, so I get what your retirement is about!
Don't forget to send us postcards :)
Thank you for joining in with the collaboration😃

indeed, postcards, sure... but they may come in lump sums. Turns out, some places simply do not have Post Offices

I feel one is allowed to enjoy retirement after a long life of hard work. Hard work and dedication for 40+ years? Yeah you deserve the boat ⛵. Go create new adventures, enjoy the silence, the beauty, the chaos, but enjoy it knowing you have given so much time in the past. Retirement is time to relax and see the world in a different view.

so, Alaska, Galapagos, the Panama Canal, Caribbean, and then, a trip down the coast, to Uruguay, then during some January, over to Antarctica. I'll be so close, and there a few peeps, in SA, so, you are one! Maybe a mini Hive Meetup? Kinda vague 5 year plan.

This sounds fun! I mean if we can have a meet up we can have food 😁. I'm always keen for food! And it would be wonderful to meet some of the people from hive.

Can I come too, please?

Also... there's a community being developed on an island off the coast of Australia. They'd need a person like you for the food thing you know.

Lots of interesting things developing now around the world...

So plan, lots... but always plan in pencil.

You hit the nail on the head, we all just need to realize that and go with the flow!

Sounds like you've had an exciting & busy life @bluefinstudios, and have even more exciting plans ahead; that is the way to really live life!

Just like you, my love language is feeding the people I love, so I know exactly where you're coming from there!
PS. Excuse all the exclamation marks, I'm not shouting, I'm just excited about life...well... at least most of the time;)

After years spent on the road doing your thing, traveling by boat rather than truck or car sounds like a great change. Your plans for the future, starting with exploring the New England coastline, and your hometown area, and then seeing Alaska, the west coast of Central America, the Galapagos, the Panama Canal, and the Caribbean, sound like several dream vacations. Do you need a 1st mate?

Those are the perfect lifestyles retirement or no retirement 😅

Great organisation of this post 👍

You have excellent plans, very detailed and they sound fun. I imagined you as Magellan or Blackbeard, sailing the seven seas traveling in a beautiful boat; living under the care of the sea with nothing to worry about. These are beautiful aspirations and I hope you fulfill them.

This is amazing. You haven't asked for too much during retirement but have your plans to do more of what you love most and used to from childhood. Setting goals for the future after retirement early enough is an important thing so as not to fail or find retirement as boring or the retiree becoming a burden to people around.Wishing you all the best when you do retire
