Seed Starter Mix

For those who prefer to watch on YouTube:
Seed Starter Mix

Follow Along as I get my SEED STARTER MIX ready for Seed Starting, for the GroVid23 Season! It's only a couple weeks before SEED STARTING!

Seeds need the correct growing medium, and I prepare mine for the best grow possible. They neeed light, fluffy loose soil for easy root growth. And preparing the soil will help Kill off any unwanted Fungus Gnat Eggs, and create light, fluffy growing soil for the best Seed Germination!

Most of you know, I prefer locally grown food. It's healthier for my family, and for the planet. In fact, I prefer to grow my own food. I know what goes into my foods, and what chemicals are NOT in my food. Also, It cuts down on carbon emissions, less trucking to get fresh foods to my table.

And that makes me smile... better for the planet, better for my own family.

Are you planning on Seed Starting over winter?

Grow Your OWN is not just a simple short challenge,
it's about taking control of your future!

Boiling water to sterilize the soil. That's a good tip.

bagged soil can contain so many gnat eggs. ALWAYS smart to start out right

Nice! I need to wait a couple of months still before I can put my seed in the trays! But I should start planning now! Thanks for the reminder!

Northern or southern CA? (I guess it could be central valley!) Difference in the growing seasons, there.

Actually the original GroVid20 challenge came from someone in California. Do you know @dreemsteem ? Founder of dreemport.com

I actually sowed Garlic in early November. We over winter our Hard Neck Garlic here in New England. I may try some of that white softneck California Garlic come march.

Here's my Garlic sowing Video:

I'm not planning to do anything about seeds through the winter this year, but maybe in the future... Somehow it just seems like it's too early to think about gardening right now 😂

I'm definitely interested in having a head start though, so maybe closer to spring :)

Use https://www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates to find your average last frost date, and do the math backwards for planting. Farmer's Almanac gives you the closest weather station/big city, etc.

Tomorrow's video I am making is actually on this subject. so for me, last avg frost is April 24th ish... I will say, May 1st, for being safe. From there, I look at my seed pack for tomato, and it says plant 6 weeks before last frost. 6 weeks before May 1st is Mid March. Which lines up perfectly, as I typically plant tomato March 15th under my grow lights. Peppers are 6-8 weeks, and I plant them around March 1st. Onions I do about Feb 15th, and they go outside mid April, as they do not mind cold at all!
That's all for me, as I have grow lights, heat matts and space to keep them indoors longer if needed. You can plant closer to frost date and still get a head start!

Yeah, space is definitely an issue for me. Maybe I need to figure out a better way of storing things 😂
