Fire Ants and Dragonfly: Every close up tells a story that the naked eye might miss

“The beauty of nature lives in the smallest details.”

Hello everyone, have a nice day to you all, hope everyone's doing great today where ever part of the world you are right now..

Today, I will be sharing some of the photos I took of ants and a dragonfly. Actually, they were not the subjects I really wanted to photograph because what I have been trying to capture for several days is a butterfly...
For the past few days,.. a black butterfly with bright,. colorful patterns on its wings has been coming back to our garden. I have been watching it closely, hoping to capture some good photos of it. ..However,..until now, all it seems to do is fly around the flowers in our garden. It does land on them,,, but it doesn't even stay for a second before flying away again..
It is really difficult to photograph because my camera lens only has manual focus.. Using my other lens is also challenging because it is designed for close up photography. I cannot get too close to the butterfly, though, because it is so active and flies away as soon as I approach it...
Feeling a little frustrated, I decided to look for other subjects to photograph instead. That's when I noticed some ants crawling on our orchid flowers and leaves. So, I took the opportunity to photograph them, and these are the photos I managed to capture.

While I was taking photos of the ants,,, the butterfly I had been chasing appeared again. It was as if it was trying to tease me! It kept flying back and forth in front of me and behind me... Since I really wanted to photograph it,,, I tried chasing it once again, but it flew farther away. I couldn't help feeling frustrated all over again,,..
Luckily, I spotted a dragonfly perched on a rope.. It seemed much more cooperative because it didn't fly away immediately..It only changed its position from time to time, giving me a chance to take some photos of it..

While I was taking more photos of the dragonfly,, the butterfly appeared again. Just like before.., it kept flying back and forth in front of me and behind me again, as if it were trying to tease me again,,..
However, I decided not to pay attention to it or chase it anymore because I knew it would only fly farther away if I tried to follow it again. So,, I just let it be and went inside the house because the sunlight was already getting too hot...

Thats all for today,, hope you like my photos😊😊

The pictures and texts are all mine..

They are not easy to capture. As their constant movement might affect the camera shot. But I must confess you did a fantastic job clicking them so sharply.

Yes... Using manual fucos lens is very hard to track the subject and to fucos...i got a chance to fucos when they're not moving..

Nice shot! Hmm This dragonfly reminds me of my elementary school days. We used to catch them and tie them up.

What a nice story behind these photos, @blueoctopus! You went looking for the black butterfly and it kept teasing you, but the patience paid off anyway, with the ants on the orchids and then the dragonfly sitting still on the rope. Photographing such small and restless subjects is hard, and with a manual-focus lens it must be even harder. Thanks also for saying openly that the first photo was edited with ChatGPT.

I liked how the title says it: the small details are easy to miss with the naked eye, and a close-up shows a whole little world. I am curious about one thing: which lens did you use for the ants and the dragonfly, the manual-focus one or the close-up one? And did the black butterfly finally let you take its picture another day?

Thank you for appreciating.. For the ant, I used my camera's kit lens. For the dragonfly, I switched to my manual 80–210mm lens so I wouldn't have to get too close and risk scare the dragonfly...It's difficult to track a moving subject when using a manual lens. I never had a chance to take photo of the black butterfly 😊😊

Thank you for the details, @blueoctopus! Using the kit lens for the ants and switching to the manual 80-210mm lens for the dragonfly was a smart choice: keeping some distance is the best way not to scare it away. Tracking a moving subject with manual focus is not easy, so the sharp results are even more impressive.

It is a pity the black butterfly never stayed still for you. A tip that sometimes helps: butterflies are slower and calmer in the early morning, when it is still cool, and they often come back to the same flowers. Maybe you will get your photo one day, and I would love to see it!

The sight of this particularly attractive grasshopper brought back memories of my childhood. You can't see the wings on this grasshopper, which flies with its wings like a butterfly. That's white but it can be felt and seen up close.

Also thank you for sharing your beautiful skill of taking this interesting photo of ants and grasshoppers.

The specials really follow the childhood and their movements and beautiful rides always make for a story.

Many thanks for sharing the beautiful story of these fascinating animals, including this special scene. However this is one of the many really hard things to do photographing a true grasshopper.
